The IEEE had ratified the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ixiacom.com\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/whitepaper\/ixia-automotive-ethernet-primer-whitepaper_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IEEE 802.3bp<\/a> Ethernet standard<\/strong> which addresses how Ethernet operates in <strong>harsh environments. <\/strong>Now Ethernet has been installed in the harshest environment where we live, the <strong>International Space Station<\/strong>. During an April 2019<span class=\"st\"> Extravehicular Activities (EVA),<\/span> U.S. astronaut Anne McClain and Canadian astronaut David Saint Jacques upgraded the International Space Station\u2019s communication systems by installing Ethernet cables.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sf\/national\/2013\/09\/14\/the-skies-the-limits\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104776 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ISS-2011.png?resize=203%2C81&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ISS-2011.png?w=203&amp;ssl=1 203w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ISS-2011.png?resize=75%2C30&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ISS-2011.png?resize=150%2C60&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cablinginstall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cabling Install and Maintenance<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cablinginstall.com\/design-install\/article\/16479610\/astronauts-install-ethernet-cables-on-international-space-station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that during a six-plus-hour spacewalk the astronauts installed Ethernet cables on the exterior of the space station to upgrade the wireless communication system and to improve its hard-wired communication system.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/iss-spacewalk-today-astronauts-try-to-fix-battery-problem-run-cables-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> the spacewalker&#8217;s connected Ethernet cabling at the forward end of the station&#8217;s\u00a0 U.S.&#8217;s <span class=\"st\">primary research laboratory for U.S. payloads module (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Destiny_(ISS_module)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Destiny module<\/a>) that will extend wireless connectivity for science instruments mounted outside the space station.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA<\/a> Tweeted a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Space_Station\/status\/1115246811453636608\/video\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video clip of the cable installation<\/a> during which the narrator explained, \u201c.<em>.. They\u2019ll be de-mating and mating some cables to provide additional Ethernet to the International Space Station.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Pulling more cable to expand wireless coverage &#8211; nice to know some things are truly universal. Whether you call it cable pulling, or mating cables, the truck-roll cost to the ISS must be pretty steep.
