The new GPS system now makes it possible to constantly <strong>track your best friend<\/strong> according to a <a title=\"www.technologyreview.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120125124143\/http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/blog\/helloworld\/27188\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> in <a title=\"MIT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIT&#8217;s <\/a><em><a title=\"www.technologyreview.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Technology Review<\/a><\/em>. The <strong>GPS devices<\/strong> made just for pets are generally small enough to be <strong>attached to a dog or cat collar<\/strong> which allows Owners to track their furry companion\u2019s every paw print in real-time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www8.garmin.com\/aboutGPS\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109722 size-full\" title=\"GPS\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gps-1.jpg?resize=75%2C73&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"GPS\" width=\"75\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a>The<em>\u00a0<\/em><em><a title=\"www.nj.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Star-Ledger<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"www.nj.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/business\/index.ssf\/2011\/09\/pets_gps_tracking_devices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">points out<\/a> unlike microchips embedded in the skin of an animal which store identifying information, these devices aren\u2019t invasive, and owners don\u2019t have to wait for a stranger to find and bring their lost pet to an animal shelter to scan the chip.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This could easily be a multi-million-dollar category,&#8221; David Lummis, a &#8220;pet market analyst,&#8221; at <a title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">New York-based<\/a> market research firm <a title=\"Packaged Facts\" href=\"https:\/\/www.packagedfacts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Packaged Facts<\/a>, recently told the <em>New Jersey Star-Ledger<\/em>. Dog owners are now more &#8220;crazy&#8221; about their four-legged friends than ever. If the recession is any indication, Mr. Lummis told the paper that the $58 billion pet products industry has merely slowed a few percentage points during the recession.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pettracker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109725\" title=\"tagg logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagg_logo.png?resize=120%2C37&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tagg logo\" width=\"120\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagg_logo.png?resize=150%2C46&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagg_logo.png?resize=75%2C23&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagg_logo.png?w=198&amp;ssl=1 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/a>That kind of consistent growth has attracted the attention of <strong><a title=\"Qualcomm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.qualcomm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Qualcomm<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : QCOM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-QCOM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QCOM<\/a>) the biggest maker of mobile phone chips.\u00a0 San Diego-based Snaptracs, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, has released <a title=\"Tagg the Pet Tracker\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pettracker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tagg the Pet Tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The rechargeable Tagg device can be attached to a collar (provided it&#8217;s not a spiked or bejeweled one), plus a home base unit. Owners are able to set a virtual perimeter for the dog to wander. <em>TR<\/em> says a text message or email alert will be sent if Fido strays too far. The device has a battery life of some 30 days and is water-resistant; it&#8217;s intended for dogs (or cats) 10 pounds or heavier. The necessary hardware and one year of\u00a0<a title=\"Verizon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.verizon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Verizon<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : VZ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-VZ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VZ<\/a>) service cost $200 according to <em>Technology Review.\u00a0<\/em>The service costs $5 a month after that. It\u2019s a small price to pay, Dave Vigil, president of Snaptracs told the paper, considering pets are becoming increasingly &#8220;like family members.&#8221; Users can also find their pets at any time through a computer or smartphone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/jessie_wiley-2.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109727\" title=\"Jessie and Wiley\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/jessie_wiley-2-e1571448926264-112x150.jpg?resize=89%2C120&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Jessie and Wiley\" width=\"89\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/jessie_wiley-2-e1571448926264.jpg?resize=112%2C150&amp;ssl=1 112w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/jessie_wiley-2-e1571448926264.jpg?resize=56%2C75&amp;ssl=1 56w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/jessie_wiley-2-e1571448926264.jpg?w=428&amp;ssl=1 428w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 89px) 100vw, 89px\" \/><\/a>GPS giant <strong><a title=\"Garmin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.garmin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garmin<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GRMN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-GRMN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GRMN<\/a>), has also entered the dog lo-jack market. The paper says the <a title=\"Olathe, Kansas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olatheks.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Olathe, <\/a>Kansas-based\u00a0company released the <a title=\"GTU 10 device\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130316075556\/https:\/\/buy.garmin.com\/shop\/shop.do?pID=67686&amp;ra=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GTU 10 device<\/a>, a 1.7-ounce gadget. Garmin users can also set up a perimeter and receive alerts, or track real-time from a mobile device or computer. The GTU 10 operates on\u00a0<a title=\"AT&amp;T\" href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">AT&amp;T<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"www.nyse.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a>) wireless network and costs $200 for the first year and $50 a year after that.<\/p>\n<p>Another competitor is <strong><a title=\"Retriever\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170918071446\/http:\/\/getretriever.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Retriever<\/a><\/strong>. <em>TR<\/em> says Retriever has similar functions with virtual fences and alerts but adds a<strong> social networking element<\/strong>. Retriever will share Spot&#8217;s location with a friend, presumably so if your dog gets loose while you&#8217;re out-of-town, you can help steer the on-site rescue. To judge from its site, Retriever appears to not yet be on the market, nor is a projected price listed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Technology Review<\/em> also notes other products in this niche. <a title=\"Global Pet Finder\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Global-Pet-Finder-GPS-Tracker\/dp\/B000CEN0YC\/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Pet Finder<\/a>, is not available any more on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMZN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMZN<\/a>) as of this article. The <a title=\"www.spotlightgps.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151209000158\/http:\/\/www.spotlightgps.com:80\/?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SpotLight<\/a> device costs $169.99 and is limited to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T-Mobile<\/a> coverage. SpotLight costs $179.88 per year for a subscription. The <a title=\"Love My Pets\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240123020459\/https:\/\/lovemypetsgps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Love My Pets<\/a> device and 1-year subscription cost $189.95 use the <a title=\"Sprint Nextel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sprint.com\/business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprint<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : S\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">S<\/a>) network. The Love My Pets system costs $14.95 per month for a subscription according to a CSR.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Qualcomm&#8217;s goal is to encourage new uses of its radio chips, not to make a hit product. These products are part of the <strong>Internet of Things<\/strong>. As the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) iPod and iPhone have shown, people are willing to shell out a lot of cash for things, but it is in the services where the money is to be made on the Internet of Things.
