Smart TVs are like <strong>regular televisions but with an internet connection<\/strong>. The global smart TVs market is <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191225141613\/https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20190304005667\/en\/Global-Smart-TVs-Market-Forecast-Report-2019-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expected<\/a> to reach <strong>249.9M <\/strong>units by 2024. And all those smart TVs may be <strong>spying on you<\/strong>. A while ago I wrote about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vizio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vizio<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/technology\/la-fi-tn-vizio-leeco-20170410-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VZIO<\/a>)\u00a0getting caught invading your privacy by <strong>collecting and selling your <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/vizio-tvs-sell-your-viewing-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">personal data<\/a><\/strong>. Despite the fact that Vizo had to pay a $2.2M fine, smart TV manufacturers continue to spy on their customers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearswift.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/22\/australian-federal-police-department-sensitive-data-leak-scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"data leak noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-111804\" title=\"Data leak\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_leak-1-e1575855635605-150x98.png?resize=110%2C72&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Data leak\" width=\"110\" height=\"72\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_leak-1-e1575855635605.png?resize=150%2C98&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_leak-1-e1575855635605.png?resize=75%2C49&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_leak-1-e1575855635605.png?w=291&amp;ssl=1 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>ZDNet<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/smart-tvs-send-user-data-to-tech-heavyweights-including-facebook-google-netflix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that that smart TVs <strong>send user data<\/strong> to tech titans including<strong> <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ : FB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-FB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FB<\/a>),<strong> <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>), and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Netflix<\/a>. <\/strong>These devices are spying on you even when they are idle. They also report every device they studied <strong>exposed some kind of information in\u00a0<\/strong><b>plain-text<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/276048\/ilyapozin\/6-networking-mistakes-ruining-your-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"eavesdropping noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-111805\" title=\"eavesdropping\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication.jpg?resize=110%2C73&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eavesdropping\" width=\"110\" height=\"73\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication.jpg?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication.jpg?resize=75%2C50&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>The researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastern.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northeastern University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imperial College London<\/a> found that 37% could &#8220;reliably inferred&#8221; <strong>user and device behavior<\/strong> from eavesdropping on the user&#8217;s interactions with television sets and other household IoT products.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that almost half of the tested devices contacted Amazon. That includes devices not manufactured by Amazon. David Choffnes, one of the authors of the paper warns that Amazon has a lot of information about what you are doing in your home.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper location <strong>data and IP addresses<\/strong> were commonly sent by our IoT devices to third parties in the cloud including <strong>Netflix<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spotify<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akamai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akamai<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AKAM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AKAM<\/a>), and <strong>Google<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"netflix logo noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-111806\" title=\"Netflix logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_netflix-e1575856209334-150x56.jpg?resize=90%2C34&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Netflix logo\" width=\"90\" height=\"34\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_netflix-e1575856209334.jpg?resize=150%2C56&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_netflix-e1575856209334.jpg?resize=1024%2C382&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_netflix-e1575856209334.jpg?resize=75%2C28&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_netflix-e1575856209334.jpg?resize=768%2C286&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_netflix-e1575856209334.jpg?w=1038&amp;ssl=1 1038w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_netflix-e1575856209334.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 90px) 100vw, 90px\" \/><\/a>When it came to smart TVs, however, <strong>almost all<\/strong> of the devices included in the study would <strong>contact Netflix<\/strong> &#8212; whether or not a TV was configured with an account for the content streaming service. &#8220;<em>This, at the very least, exposes information to Netflix about the model of [a] TV at a given location,<\/em>&#8221; the paper reads.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the tech titans collecting your data responded to the researchers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facebook<\/strong> said that it was &#8220;<strong>common<\/strong>&#8221; for services with Facebook integrated into them to <strong>send data to third-party services<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Netflix<\/strong> said that data transfers were &#8220;<em>confined to how Netflix performs and appears on screen,<\/em>&#8221; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google<\/strong> said user preferences and consent levels dictate how publishers &#8220;<em>may share data with Google&#8217;s that&#8217;s similar to <strong>data used for ads in apps<\/strong> or on the web<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Internet-connected smart TVs combined with streaming services like <strong>Netflix and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hulu<\/a><\/strong> seem to be a <strong>cord-cutter\u2019s<\/strong> dream. But like anything else that connects to the internet, it opens up smart TVs to security vulnerabilities and hackers. But as is the case with most other internet-connected devices, manufacturers often don\u2019t put security as a priority. Not only that, many smart TVs come with a camera and a microphone that attackers can access.<\/p>\n<h3>FBI\u00a0warning<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/05\/02\/403623915\/louie-louie-indecipherable-or-indecent-an-fbi-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"fbi tvs a about issued noopener smart warning noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-111813\" title=\"FBI issued a warning about smart TVs\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gman.png?resize=82%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"FBI issued a warning about smart TVs\" width=\"82\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gman.png?resize=150%2C138&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gman.png?resize=75%2C69&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gman.png?resize=768%2C705&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gman.png?w=958&amp;ssl=1 958w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 82px) 100vw, 82px\" \/><\/a>Because manufacturers don\u2019t put security as a priority, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FBI<\/a> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210411155516\/https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/contact-us\/field-offices\/portland\/news\/press-releases\/tech-tuesdaysmart-tvs\/?=portland-field-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>issued a warning<\/strong><\/a> about the risks that smart TVs pose. The FBI warned that <strong>hackers can take control of your unsecured smart TV<\/strong> and in worst cases, take control of the camera and microphone to watch and listen in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8230; TV manufacturers and app developers may be listening and watching you, that television can also be a gateway for hackers to come into your home &#8230; your unsecured TV can give him or her an easy way in the backdoor through your router.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechCrunch<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/12\/01\/fbi-smart-tv-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> that some of the <strong>biggest attacks targeting smart TVs<\/strong> were developed by the <strong>CIA<\/strong>, but were stolen. The files were later<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/4\/25\/15421326\/smart-tv-hacking-cia-samsung-weeping-angel-vulnerability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0published online<\/a>\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WikiLeaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WikiLeaks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If you are interested in inspecting the IoT network traffic in your smart home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Princeton University<\/a> has developed and released an open source tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200305015417\/https:\/\/iot-inspector.princeton.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IoT Inspector<\/a>.
