But why <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211124101417\/https:\/\/searchwindowsserver.techtarget.com\/definition\/Ctrl-Alt-Delete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CTRL + ALT + DELETE<\/a><\/strong>? Turns out the three-finger salute was a 10-minute hack to make programmers life easier. The CTRL + ALT + DELETE was born at <strong><a title=\"IBM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a> <\/strong>(<a title=\"NYSE : IBM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-IBM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a>) in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhistory.org\/revolution\/personal-computers\/17\/301\/1087?position=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113611\" title=\"IBM PC\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_PC_orginal-e1585407448200-139x150.jpg?resize=83%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IBM PC\" width=\"83\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_PC_orginal-e1585407448200.jpg?resize=139%2C150&amp;ssl=1 139w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_PC_orginal-e1585407448200.jpg?resize=69%2C75&amp;ssl=1 69w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_PC_orginal-e1585407448200.jpg?w=462&amp;ssl=1 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 83px) 100vw, 83px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20231225131808\/https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/ibm\/history\/exhibits\/pc25\/pc25_birth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Project Acorn<\/a> was the code name for the rush project to build<strong> IBM\u2019s new personal computer<\/strong> &#8211; because <a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/golden-age-of-trs-80-a-look-back-at-radioshack-computers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RadioShack<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/1981\/0915\/091501.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already selling small stand-alone computers<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computinghistory.org.uk\/det\/15021\/David-Bradley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Bradley<\/a> was part of the team working from the IBM offices in Boca Raton, FL on the <strong>IBM PC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Mental Floss<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/51674\/history-ctrl-alt-delete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that the programmers\u2019 working on the IBM PC had to manually restart the entire system whenever the computer encountered a coding glitch. This was a waste of time. Mr. Bradley told <em>Mental Floss<\/em>,\u00a0 \u201c<em>Some days, you\u2019d be rebooting every five minutes as you searched for the problem &#8230; The tedious tests made the coders want to pull their hair out.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113612\" title=\"IBM logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_ibm_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C40&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IBM logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_ibm_logo.jpg?w=142&amp;ssl=1 142w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_ibm_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C40&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>Mr. Bradley worked on everything from writing input\/output programs to troubleshooting wire-wrap boards on Project Acorn. In order to placate the programmers, Mr. Bradley created <strong>a hack<\/strong>. His hack was a keyboard shortcut that triggered a <strong>system reset without memory tests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To Mr. Bradley CTRL + ALT + DELETE, was just another item to tick off his to-do list. Mr. Bradley never intended to make the shortcut available to customers, nor did he expect it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurstpublishers.com\/book\/ctrl-alt-del\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">become<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/gadgetsin.com\/ctrl-alt-del-pillow-set.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/keepcalms.com\/p\/keep-calm-and-press-ctrl-alt-delete-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cultural<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dudeiwantthat.com\/household\/kitchen\/ctrl-alt-delete-cup-set.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">icon<\/a>. It was meant for his fellow coders, for whom every second counted.<\/p>\n<h3>Thank IBM for CTRL + ALT + DELETE<\/h3>\n<p>The IBM team managed to finish Acorn on schedule. In the fall of 1981, the IBM PC hit the market. It was a dull gray box beneath a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcjs.org\/devices\/pcx86\/machine\/5150\/mda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green screen<\/a> monitor. Marketers predicted that the company would sell less than 50,000 units a year. IBM execs thought that estimate was too optimistic. They were all wrong. That changed in the early 1990s when <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft&#8217;s<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2017\/09\/if-bill-gates-really-thinks-ctrl-alt-del-was-a-mistake-he-should-have-fixed-it-himself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows 3<\/a> took off. Now <strong>Microsoft\u2019s Windows PCs were crashing<\/strong> and the infamous \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhope.com\/jargon\/b\/bsod.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>blue screen of death<\/strong><\/a>\u201d plagued Windows users. A quick fix to the BSOD spread by word of mouth <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210404075600\/https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/insider\/2011\/08\/06\/20-years-ago-today-the-world-wide-web-opened-to-the-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this was before the WWW<\/a><\/em>) &#8211; CTRL + ALT + DELETE. Suddenly, Mr. Bradley\u2019s quick <strong>hack was a big deal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/microsoft\/windows\/11929017\/11-times-the-Windows-blue-screen-of-death-struck-in-public.html?frame=3471431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113618 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BSOD-e1585407707469-150x108.jpg?resize=150%2C108&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BSOD-e1585407707469.jpg?resize=150%2C108&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BSOD-e1585407707469.jpg?resize=75%2C54&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BSOD-e1585407707469.jpg?w=464&amp;ssl=1 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>At an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the IBM PC industry big-wigs gathered for a panel discussion. <em>Mental Floss<\/em> says that the first question to the panel bypassed Microsoft chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Bill-Gates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bill Gates<\/strong><\/a> and was for David Bradley. Mr. Bradley, who has always been surprised by how popular his CTRL + ALT + DELETE hack made him, was quick to deflect the glory. The programmer joked;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I have to share the credit, I may have invented it, but I think <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/K_lg7w8gAXQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bill made it famous<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Bill Gates has publicly admitted that CTRL + ALT + DELETE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/9\/26\/4772680\/bill-gates-admits-ctrl-alt-del-was-a-mistake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was a mistake<\/a> &#8211; but the company he founded continues to use Mr. Bradley&#8217;s hack.
