In keeping with the wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-n6Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cybersecurity mergers and acquisitions<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-11-25\/dell-is-said-to-explore-sale-of-rsa-cybersecurity-unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>rumor<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/news\/security\/dell-investigating-sale-of-rsa-security-for-at-least-1-billion-report?itc=refresh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>mil<\/strong>l<\/a> is reporting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell<\/a> is\u00a0exploring the sale of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsa.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RSA Security<\/a> business unit. If the rumors are correct, RSA can be had for at <strong>least $1 billion<\/strong>. Rumors about Dell potentially selling RSA have surfaced multiple times over the past few years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"rsa security logo noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-111683 size-thumbnail\" title=\"RSA Security logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rsa-e1575075816332-75x33.png?resize=75%2C33&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"RSA Security logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"33\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rsa-e1575075816332.png?resize=75%2C33&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rsa-e1575075816332.png?resize=150%2C66&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rsa-e1575075816332.png?w=350&amp;ssl=1 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>Dell inherited RSA<\/strong> in 2016 as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2015\/10\/12\/dell-buy-emc-largest-tech-deal-ever\/73727530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$67 billion <strong>acquisition<\/strong><\/a><strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gilpress\/2016\/09\/06\/a-very-short-history-of-emc-corporation\/#241f4be15c4a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMC<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>EMC bought RSA<\/strong> for about $2.1 billion in 2006. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RSA_Security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RSA Security<\/a> was founded in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>RSA is well-known for its products. Well known products include <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191225022207\/https:\/\/www.rsa.com\/en-us\/products\/rsa-securid-suite\/rsa-securid-access\/securid-hardware-tokens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SecurID<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210923124119\/https:\/\/searchsecurity.techtarget.com\/definition\/multifactor-token\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multifactor authentication tokens<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210501163336\/https:\/\/www.rsa.com\/en-us\/products\/threat-detection-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NetWitness<\/a><\/strong> for <a href=\"https:\/\/securityintelligence.com\/articles\/what-is-siem-and-how-does-it-enhance-threat-detection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">security incident event management and threat detection and response<\/a>. However, RSA is probably best known for its annual<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210708042410\/https:\/\/www.rsaconference.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RSA Conference<\/a><\/strong> in San Francisco. RSA faces many of the same issues that have precipitated the <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-t0D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>HP &#8211; Xerox face-off<\/strong><\/a>. Dell also owns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.secureworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Secureworks<\/strong><\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msspalert.com\/top100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSSP<\/a> that\u2019s evolved a software-defined era led by threat detection and management services. Additionally, Dell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>VMware<\/strong><\/a> business now owns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdxcentral.com\/articles\/news\/vmware-drops-2-1b-on-carbon-black-now-what\/2019\/09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carbon Black<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 an endpoint protection and cybersecurity company that works closely with MSSPs. Dell has been connecting the dots between Secureworks, VMware, and Carbon Black as part of its own enterprise security strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Dell nor RSA commented on the Bloomberg report.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>As I have noted a number of times on <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach Seat<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240415214512\/https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/595182\/worldwide-security-as-a-service-market-size\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cyber-security market<\/a> is seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityventures.com\/q2-2019-cybersecurity-ma-report-more-than-7b-in-deals-during-first-quarter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lots of M&amp;A action<\/a>. If Dell is really serious about unloading RSA, now is the time to do it. Before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cshub.com\/interviews\/articles\/is-the-cyber-security-industry-in-a-bubble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cyber-security bubble<\/a> bursts and\/or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2019\/10\/01\/trump-is-heading-into-re-election-with-deep-manufacturing-recession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">economy tanks again<\/a>.
