Rumors are that <strong>data-leaker Facebook<\/strong> is combining two <strong>bad ideas<\/strong>, software from <strong>Windows NT<\/strong> with <strong>FB hardware<\/strong>. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Verge<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/12\/19\/21030043\/facebook-os-custom-operating-system-android-reliance-self-sufficiency-ar-glasses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that Facebook is developing its own operating system. Oculus, Portal, and forthcoming augmented reality glasses, code-named \u201cOrion,\u201d currently run on a modified version of Google&#8217;s Android. FB wants to <strong>reduce or remove entirely the control GOOG<\/strong> has over its hardware.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ficus?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ficus Kirkpatrick<\/a>, who heads Facebook\u2019s AR and VR group hedges his bets, he told T<em>he Verge<\/em> \u201cit\u2019s possible\u201d that <strong>future FB hardware won\u2019t rely on Google\u2019s software<\/strong>. Facebook\u2019s head of hardware, <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/media-gallery\/executives\/andrew-boz-bosworth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Bosworth<\/a> is more definitive, \u201c<em>&#8230; we\u2019re gonna do it ourselves.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112762\" title=\"Facebook phone crashed and burned almost immediately.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fb_phone-e1581281980590-125x150.jpg?resize=84%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Facebook phone crashed and burned almost immediately.\" width=\"84\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fb_phone-e1581281980590.jpg?resize=125%2C150&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fb_phone-e1581281980590.jpg?resize=63%2C75&amp;ssl=1 63w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fb_phone-e1581281980590.jpg?w=370&amp;ssl=1 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 84px) 100vw, 84px\" \/>The Verge<\/em> points out that Facebook\u2019s last attempt at producing its own OS did not go so well.\u00a0The Facebook phone, or, more precisely, the <strong>Facebook phone\u00a0<em>mobile operating system<\/em>, crashed and burned<\/strong> almost immediately.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210414161326\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/04\/04\/facebook-phone-htc-first-debuts-april-12-with-facebook-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/04\/04\/facebook-phone-htc-first-debuts-april-12-with-facebook-home\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581202721813000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF3plwKMDBV9GFZMWoBiRtE5bhcbw\">Unveiled in 2013<\/a>, Mark Zuckerberg promised the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210119020052\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/04\/04\/facebook-phone-unveiled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/04\/04\/facebook-phone-unveiled\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581202721813000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEHGYbOqcGMQqZqy0kn4vYREdpT9Q\">$99 device<\/a>\u00a0would &#8220;<em>turn your Android phone into a great social device.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t exactly work out that way. Instead, shortly after the Facebook phone went on sale, the <strong>price <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210620135244\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/05\/08\/facebook-phone-now-99-cents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/05\/08\/facebook-phone-now-99-cents\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581202721813000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHZ0rb3hzT92Vb89iBJA-4Byu8_Ug\">dropped to 99 cents<\/a><\/strong>. The operating system was called out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/04\/facebooks-phone-is-a-triumph-of-mediocrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/04\/facebooks-phone-is-a-triumph-of-mediocrity\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581202721813000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGdopTYPQIFkqTkakYqdpClhdwAJg\">as mediocre<\/a>, and early adopters complained that it was <strong>counter-intuitive<\/strong> and hard to \u2014 of all things \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/04\/facebook-home-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/04\/facebook-home-problems\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581202721813000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGF4IuFYeQh8R5X0dlSdk-Stq_gRg\">place a phone call<\/a>. By 2014, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/27\/what-happened-to-the-facebook-phone-not-very-much-it-seems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/27\/what-happened-to-the-facebook-phone-not-very-much-it-seems&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581202721813000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGC3zno7W9od2ZotmutxS3kSw1qDA\"><em>New York Times<\/em> reported<\/a> that Facebook had disbanded the mobile OS engineering team.<\/p>\n<p>The FB mobile OS attempt resulted in a forked version of Android that ran on an HTC produced phone back in 2013. <strong>Flooding a phone with Facebook\u2019s social feed<\/strong> was wildly unpopular even back before Facebook\u2019s brand was tarnished with numerous <strong>privacy scandals<\/strong>. Facebook will have an uphill battle on its hands if it wants people to give its software another shot.<\/p>\n<p>For those with short memories <strong>FB has leaked nearly 1 billion personal data records<\/strong> that we know about since 2018:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>December 2019 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/threatpost.com\/267m-facebook-phone-numbers-exposed-online\/151327\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">267 million<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210414171839\/https:\/\/www.pascalswereld.nl\/2016\/06\/07\/digital-workspace-transformation-information-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113164\" title=\"FB has leaked nearly 1 billion personal data records\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_leak-2-e1582929770533-150x98.png?resize=168%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"FB has leaked nearly 1 billion personal data records\" width=\"168\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>April 2019 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/threatpost.com\/facebook-and-amazon-are-locked-in-a-blame-game-over-leaked-data-whos-really-to-blame\/143467\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">540 million<\/a><\/li>\n<li>December 2018 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2018\/12\/14\/facebook-photos-bug-may-have-impacted-6-8-million-people\/2311617002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6.8 million<\/a><\/li>\n<li>October 2018 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/security\/facebook-says-hackers-saw-personal-info-14-million-people-n919531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">14 million<\/a><\/li>\n<li>September 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/28\/technology\/facebook-hack-data-breach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50 million<\/a><\/li>\n<li>June 2018 &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/facebook-s-privacy-woes-continue-bug-made-user-posts-public-n881131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">14 million<\/a><\/li>\n<li>March 2018 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/17\/us\/politics\/cambridge-analytica-trump-campaign.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">87 million<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The idea of another FB OS gets even scarier when you add the legacy of Windows NT on top of FB&#8217;s lack of respect for its user privacy. The for uninitiated, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows_NT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows NT<\/a> <\/strong>was released in 1993. It was Microsoft&#8217;s first foray into a <strong>network operating system<\/strong> (NOS). WinNT had a number of issues that made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2013\/12\/sympathy-for-the-blue-screen-of-death\/282015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Blue Screen of Death<\/strong><\/a><strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blue_screen_of_death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BSOD<\/a>)<\/strong> a household phrase.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/royal.pingdom.com\/blue-screen-of-death-in-unexpected-locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112763 alignright\" title=\"Blue Screen of Death\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/vegas_BSOD-e1581282247111-97x150.jpg?resize=109%2C168&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Blue Screen of Death\" width=\"109\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/vegas_BSOD-e1581282247111.jpg?resize=97%2C150&amp;ssl=1 97w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/vegas_BSOD-e1581282247111.jpg?resize=49%2C75&amp;ssl=1 49w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/vegas_BSOD-e1581282247111.jpg?w=255&amp;ssl=1 255w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 109px) 100vw, 109px\" \/><\/a>A blue screen occurs when Windows encounters a \u201c<strong>STOP Error<\/strong>.\u201d This <strong>critical failure<\/strong> causes Windows to crash and stop working. The only thing Windows can do at that point is to restart the PC. This can lead to <strong>data loss<\/strong>, as programs don\u2019t have a chance to save their open data. FB has put <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Lucovsky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Lucovsky<\/a>, who co-authored the Windows NT operating system in charge of writing the FB OS. Some of the <strong>more notable problems with WinNT<\/strong> included,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allowing the default user to run at <strong>admin\/root privilege <i>without a password<\/i><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Noted cryptographer Bruce Schneier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneier.com\/news\/archives\/1998\/06\/cryptographer_slams_.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a> that part of Windows NT 4.0 is so broken it can&#8217;t be fixed with patches. Schneier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneier.com\/news\/archives\/1998\/06\/firm_finds_big_secur.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>, &#8220;<em>Last time they released a fix, it broke so many other parts of Windows NT.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>WinNT did <strong>not support USB<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>NTVDM (also known as Windows on Windows, or WOW) that blocked access to the hardware so that legacy applications would run as though on a DOS computer, except without access to protected areas of memory. This resulted in a <strong>substantial number of applications simply did not work<\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>People back then perhaps thought better of letting Facebook on their phones. Toward the end of the decade, it seems we&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201213113745\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/2017\/11\/01\/facebook-microphone-spying-ads-preventing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">come <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210315203509\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/2018\/01\/11\/delete-the-facebook-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mashable.com\/2018\/01\/11\/delete-the-facebook-app\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581202721813000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE_dC1Ulwlc3G086iIgvTsmXjFW6A\">full circle<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The rumor mill also says Facebook is working on a brain control interface for its devices, which could allow users to control them with their thoughts.
