Market researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gartner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IDC<\/a> reported that <strong>PC sales grew during the fourth quarter of 2019<\/strong>, boosting all of 2019 into the positive. For the entire year, global PC shipments were up 2.7%, according to the IDC. That makes 2019 <strong>the \u201cfirst full year of PC growth\u201d since 2011<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210416115047\/https:\/\/uploads.scratch.mit.edu\/users\/sebweb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112447\" title=\"Sick computer\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/pc_sick.jpg?resize=110%2C84&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sick computer\" width=\"110\" height=\"84\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/pc_sick.jpg?resize=150%2C115&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/pc_sick.jpg?resize=75%2C58&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/pc_sick.jpg?w=506&amp;ssl=1 506w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>PCWorld<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3513952\/the-pc-market-once-left-for-dead-actually-grew-during-2019.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that 2019 new PC numbers from Gartner and IDC and are remarkably similar. <strong>Gartner<\/strong> reported that <strong>PC sales grew<\/strong> 2.3% in 2019 Q4 to 70.6 million units and 261 million units for the year. Rival analyst firm <strong>IDC<\/strong> largely agreed, estimating that PC unit sales grew 4.8%, to 71.8 million units. IDC said that <strong>worldwide PC sales grew<\/strong> 2.7% for 2019 as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Among the results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>top three global PC vendors<\/strong>\u2014Lenovo, HP, and Dell\u2014all consolidated their market share, reaching 65% of the PC market.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lenovo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112448\" title=\"Lenovo logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-2-e1579747251540-75x20.png?resize=113%2C30&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Lenovo logo\" width=\"113\" height=\"30\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-2-e1579747251540.png?resize=75%2C20&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-2-e1579747251540.png?resize=150%2C41&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-2-e1579747251540.png?w=467&amp;ssl=1 467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>IDC and Gartner concur that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lenovo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>L<\/strong><strong>enovo<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/OTC-LNVGY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LNVGY<\/a>)<strong>\u00a0is the world\u2019s top PC vendor for 2019<\/strong>. IDC reports Lenovo had a 24.8% global market share and Gartner said it had a \u00a024.1%.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Globally <a title=\"HP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HP<\/a> <\/strong>(<a title=\"NYSE : HPQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:HPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HPQ<\/a>)<strong> ranked #2<\/strong> with 23.9% by IDC and 22.2% by Gartner.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell<\/a>\u00a0was ranked #3<\/strong> worldwide with 17.4% by IDC and 16.8% by Gartner. Dell\u2019s unit sales climbing by nearly 11%, according to IDC&#8217;s estimates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the <strong>U.S. market<\/strong> the &#8216;Q4-19 rankings differed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112449 size-thumbnail\" title=\"HP logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_logo-3.png?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"HP logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_logo-3.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_logo-3.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_logo-3.png?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>HP is #1<\/strong> with a 31.2% market share and a modest 4.4% bump in U.S PC sales for the quarter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dell ranked #2<\/strong> with a 26.8% market share and a gain of 15.9% for the period.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Lenovo came in #3<\/strong> with a 14.9% share and 11.2% increase in share.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tech prognosticators attributed the surge in sales to firms swapping their hardware to Windows ahead of <strong>MSFT&#8221;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4057281\/windows-7-support-ended-on-january-14-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows 7 end of support<\/a><\/strong>, giving new PC sales a <strong>one-time shot in the arm<\/strong>. Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC\u2019s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The market will still have its challenges ahead, but this year was a clear sign that PC demand is still there despite the continued insurgence of emerging form factors and the demand for mobile computing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ranjit Atwal, a research senior director at Gartner, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3515711\/pc-sales-expected-to-fall-after-windows-10-sales-bump-ends.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> to <em>PCWorld,<\/em> cast <strong>doubt on future growth<\/strong>. He says,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The PC market\u2019s future is unpredictable because there will not be a Windows 11. Instead, Windows 10 will be upgraded systematically through regular updates &#8230;As a result, peaks in PC hardware upgrade cycles driven by an entire Windows OS upgrade will end.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Don&#8217;t do your happy dance just yet.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Gartner and IDC both predict global sales to steadily decline again over 2020 as MSFT&#8217;s drives to a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/deployment\/update\/waas-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>subscription-based<\/strong> model<\/a>. Other threats to the PC market include:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>China<\/strong> &#8211; The Chinese government has\u00a0ordered all PC hardware and operating systems<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprisetalk.com\/featured\/the-u-s-china-trade-war-has-intensified-as-china-bans-foreign-hardware-and-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> imported from foreign countries to be replaced<\/strong><\/a> in the next three years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>HP- Xerox<\/strong> &#8211; I <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-t0D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have covered<\/a> Xerox&#8217;s maneuvers to take over HP. The possible disruption to HP by a Xerox <strong>hostile takeover<\/strong> could rattle the entire sector.
