Since then there has been a number of attempts to break up the firm. <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.extremenetworks.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/extreme-networks-signs-agreement-purchase-avayas-networking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Extreme<\/strong><\/a><strong> bought the Avaya network division<\/strong> in 2017. In 2019 there were <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-nDA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rumors<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitel<\/a> was going to attempt a <strong>leveraged buyout of Avaya<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112959\" title=\"RingCentral will pay Avaya $500M\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gimme_Money-1-e1582075605420-150x81.jpg?resize=120%2C65&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"RingCentral will pay Avaya $500M\" width=\"120\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gimme_Money-1-e1582075605420.jpg?resize=150%2C81&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gimme_Money-1-e1582075605420.jpg?resize=75%2C41&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gimme_Money-1-e1582075605420.jpg?resize=768%2C417&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gimme_Money-1-e1582075605420.jpg?w=807&amp;ssl=1 807w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/>Eventually, Avaya made a <strong>deal with Unified Communications as a Service <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/searchunifiedcommunications.techtarget.com\/definition\/UCaaS-Unified-Communications-as-a-Service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UCaaS<\/a>)<strong> vendor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RingCentral<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-RNG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RNG<\/a>) to save its bacon. With the deal, RingCentral will pay Avaya $500M and will be Avaya\u2019s exclusive provider of UCaaS solutions. The two firms announced the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avaya.com\/en\/about-avaya\/newsroom\/pr-us-191003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>strategic partnershi<\/strong>p<\/a>&#8221; in October 2019.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s February 2020 and the Avaya &#8211; RingCentral collaboration will start to show some results &#8211; next quarter. The beleaguered vendor announced at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.avaya.com\/usa\/events\/FY20\/engage-phoenix\/site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avaya Engage<\/a> love-fest that beginning March 31, that in the U.S. the unimaginatively named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avaya.com\/en\/products\/cloud\/small-business-solutions\/cloud-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Avaya Cloud Office by RingCentral<\/strong><\/a> (ACO) will be <strong>identical in features to the product RingCentral sells<\/strong> today. The rest of the world will have to wait &#8211; because RingCentral UCaaS is only available in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nojitter.com\/industry-news\/avaya-ringcentral-does-alliance-make-sense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seven<\/a> countries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/4154267-walter-rothschild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112995\" title=\"additional Avaya features will creep into the offering through 2020\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/turtle2-2-e1582153086976-137x150.png?resize=110%2C120&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"additional Avaya features will creep into the offering through 2020\" width=\"110\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/turtle2-2-e1582153086976.png?resize=137%2C150&amp;ssl=1 137w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/turtle2-2-e1582153086976.png?resize=69%2C75&amp;ssl=1 69w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/turtle2-2-e1582153086976.png?w=263&amp;ssl=1 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>It is <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210411122203\/https:\/\/searchunifiedcommunications.techtarget.com\/news\/252477970\/Avaya-details-feature-roadmap-for-Avaya-Cloud-Office-by-RingCentral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that a few additional Avaya <strong>features will creep into the offering<\/strong> through 2020. The first two are targeted for release this summer are bridged appearance, and call park and page. Bridged appearance lets two desk phones maintain separate and shared lines, a feature typically used between assistants and their bosses. With call park and page, when a person places a call on hold, the system will automatically send a page to another department or user to pick up the call. The feature is particularly useful to retailers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Towards the end of 2020 or later<\/strong>, the vendor expects to deliver features that include line appearance, call appearance, hotdesking, and support for the venerable Avaya <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DG-HNNmEft0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audix<\/a> voicemail service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/276048\/ilyapozin\/6-networking-mistakes-ruining-your-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112996 size-medium\" title=\"will only work with three models\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication-1-e1582153180341-150x100.jpg?resize=150%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication-1-e1582153180341.jpg?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication-1-e1582153180341.jpg?resize=75%2C50&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Woman_effective_communication-1-e1582153180341.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Initially, Avaya Cloud Office by RingCentral will only work with <strong>three models of Avaya&#8217;s J series desk phones<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avaya.com\/en\/documents\/fs-j139-ip-device-uc8115en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">139<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avaya.com\/en\/documents\/fs-j169-ip-phone-uc8094en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">169<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avaya.com\/en\/documents\/fs-j179-ip-phone-uc8095en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">179<\/a>. Avaya will work with RingCentral to certify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avaya.com\/en\/products\/devices-and-phones\/conference-phones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B series conference room phones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.avaya.com\/products\/P1692\/l100-series-headsets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L series headsets<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avaya.com\/en\/documents\/fs-cu-360-uc8096en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CU360 video conferencing<\/a> system. However, most IP Office customers are likely using older devices, given that <strong>Avaya launched the J series only one year ago<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Avaya is also developing software to automate the process of <strong>migrating settings and users from its legacy gear to the cloud<\/strong>, although that tool won&#8217;t be available until later in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nojitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No Jitter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nojitter.com\/ucaas\/avaya-ringcentral-partnership-cloud-wins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">points out<\/a> that faced with the threat of its large installed base that goes back to legacy Nortel platforms, dumping Avaya &#8211; Avaya needed to do something.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/learningspy.co.uk\/tag\/discussion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112997\" title=\"Avaya needed to do something\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_listening-e1582153290763-150x113.jpg?resize=120%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_listening-e1582153290763.jpg?resize=150%2C113&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_listening-e1582153290763.jpg?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_listening-e1582153290763.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/a>To me this looks more like a win for RingCentral. For a relatively small investment ($500M on a market capitalization of $10.5B), RingCentral becomes the preferred UCaaS provider for the large Avaya installed base (100M+ seats) likely planning on a move to the cloud. Meanwhile, Avaya picks up a fully developed UCaaS to sell &#8211; if it can execute.
