This most likely is the end of the BlackBerry smartphone. TCL had been manufacturing <a href=\"https:\/\/searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com\/definition\/BlackBerry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BlackBerry<\/a> smartphones since the Canadian company stopped making its name-sake phones in 2016 amid an attempt to re-shape itself into a cyber-security company.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112890\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rimm-bbry-e1581791132680-150x78.jpg?resize=95%2C49&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rimm-bbry-e1581791132680.jpg?resize=150%2C78&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rimm-bbry-e1581791132680.jpg?resize=75%2C39&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_rimm-bbry-e1581791132680.jpg?w=446&amp;ssl=1 446w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/>BlackBerry&#8217;s preceded the iPhone and Android in important ways. How did the Blackberry phone go from world domination to last week&#8217;s announcement?<\/p>\n<h3>Blackberry history<\/h3>\n<p><strong>March 1984:<\/strong> <strong>Research in Motion<\/strong> (RIM) was founded in Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 1997: RIM<\/strong> went public with an <strong>IPO<\/strong> on the Toronto Stock Exchange which raised <strong>$115 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220121172207\/https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/pictures\/a-history-of-blackberry-in-nine-iconic-handsets-and-one-meh-tablet-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"850 RIM noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112886\" title=\"RIM 850\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rim-850-e1581780398829-150x123.jpg?resize=95%2C78&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rim-850-e1581780398829.jpg?resize=150%2C123&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rim-850-e1581780398829.jpg?resize=75%2C62&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rim-850-e1581780398829.jpg?w=274&amp;ssl=1 274w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/a>July 1998: <\/strong>The <strong>RIM 850<\/strong> the initial BlackBerry device offered something all its competitors couldn&#8217;t touch at the time &#8211; access to <strong>emails on the go <\/strong>(no voice).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/investorplace.com\/2013\/01\/a-brief-history-of-research-in-motion\/\">1999<\/a>:<\/strong> RIM joined <strong>NASDAQ\u00a0<\/strong>as RIMM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 2001:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2006\/03\/03\/technology\/rimm_ntp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patent holding company<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/ntp-sues-apple-google-microsoft-and-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NTP sued<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/consumer-electronics\/gadgets\/the-story-behind-the-blackberry-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RIM<\/a> for <strong>patent infringement<\/strong> RIM lost and was forced to settle for <strong>$612.5M<\/strong> in 2006.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 2002: BlackBerry 5810<\/strong> released, with both <strong>voice and data<\/strong> support. It ran on a 2G network and came with a <strong>color screen<\/strong>. It became the device of choice in corporate America due to its <strong>enterprise-level security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/blackberry-messenger-shuts-down-today-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112891\" title=\"BlackBerry Messenger\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_bbm-e1581791768190-150x148.png?resize=65%2C64&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"BlackBerry Messenger\" width=\"65\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_bbm-e1581791768190.png?resize=150%2C148&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_bbm-e1581791768190.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_bbm-e1581791768190.png?w=198&amp;ssl=1 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 65px) 100vw, 65px\" \/><\/a>2005:<\/strong>\u00a0 RIM launched a proprietary mobile <strong>instant-messaging<\/strong> application <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170708015429\/http:\/\/searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com\/definition\/BlackBerry-Messenger\">BlackBerry Messenger<\/a>. BBM came at a time when other mobile messaging options &#8212; like <strong>SMS messages<\/strong> &#8212; were subpar.<\/p>\n<p>March 2007: The company &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/rim-trips-on-offering-options-to-employees\/article680555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">restated<\/a>&#8221; $250M earnings relating to a &#8220;backdating&#8221; <a title=\"Employee stock option\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Employee_stock_option\">stock options<\/a> scandal. RIM executives changed the date of stock sales to a low share price date to make money on their stock options. The scandal cost RIM&#8217;s co-CEOs Balsillie and Lazaridis and others their jobs at RIM and a total of <a title=\"Canadian dollar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BlackBerry_Limited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C$77M<\/a> in fines.<\/p>\n<p>January 2007: Apple launched its first <strong>iPhone<\/strong>, opening the market to full touch screen phones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/first-phone-anniversary-2016-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112892\" title=\"January 2007 Apple launched its first iPhone,\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_iphone5-2-e1581792388815-123x150.jpg?resize=78%2C95&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"January 2007 Apple launched its first iPhone,\" width=\"78\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_iphone5-2-e1581792388815.jpg?resize=123%2C150&amp;ssl=1 123w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_iphone5-2-e1581792388815.jpg?resize=61%2C75&amp;ssl=1 61w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_iphone5-2-e1581792388815.jpg?w=294&amp;ssl=1 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 78px) 100vw, 78px\" \/><\/a>June 2007: BlackBerry had some <strong>8 million customers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>October 2008: First <strong>Android<\/strong>-powered <strong>smartphone<\/strong> is released.<\/p>\n<p>November 2008: BlackBerry launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210227095629\/https:\/\/bgr.com\/2015\/05\/25\/worst-smartphone-ever-blackberry-storm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ill-fated<\/a> Storm, its first <strong>full touch phone <\/strong>in reaction to iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>September 2009: BlackBerry hits <strong>20.7% worldwide smartphone market share<\/strong> in Q3. iPhone is at 17.1% and Android at 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p>April 2010: Apple released the <strong>original iPad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>April 2011: RIM released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsmarena.com\/blackberry_4g_lte_playbook-pictures-3846.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PlayBook <strong>tablet<\/strong><\/a> as a knee-jerk reaction to the success of the Apple iPad. Contributing to the PlayBook&#8217;s <strong>poor sales<\/strong> was the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211019193436\/https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/pictures\/a-history-of-blackberry-in-nine-iconic-handsets-and-one-meh-tablet-photos\/10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dumb decision<\/a> to <strong>not offer email services<\/strong> without a BlackBerry smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>July 2011: 10% of RIM workforce (2,000 workers) <strong>laid off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>October 2011: RIM had a global failure of its infrastructure &#8211; users are left without service for four days (Oct 10-13).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112894\" title=\"June 2012 RIM announces 5,000 layoffs\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Layoffs-2-e1581793814631-150x75.jpg?resize=110%2C55&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"June 2012 RIM announces 5,000 layoffs\" width=\"110\" height=\"55\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Layoffs-2-e1581793814631.jpg?resize=150%2C75&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Layoffs-2-e1581793814631.jpg?resize=75%2C37&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Layoffs-2-e1581793814631.jpg?w=571&amp;ssl=1 571w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/>June 2012: RIM announced <strong>5,000 layoffs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>January 2013: The company changed its name from Research in Motion to Blackberry and goes from RIMM to <strong>BBRY<\/strong> on the <strong>NASDAQ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>September 2013: BlackBerry peaked with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BlackBerry_Limited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">79 million<\/a> global users<\/strong> and 4,500 employees are <strong>laid-off<\/strong> (40% of staff).<\/p>\n<p>November 2013: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/3\/15\/17124254\/blackberry-john-chen-staying-ceo-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Chen<\/a> becomes CEO<\/strong> and starts to pivot BBRY from a phone maker to a security firm.<\/p>\n<p>September 2015: BlackBerry launched the Priv, the first <strong>Android-powered BlackBerry<\/strong> smartphone. BlackBerry acquired mobile security provider <a title=\"Good Technology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Good_Technology\"><strong>Good Technology<\/strong><\/a> for $425M and integrated it into the BlackBerry Enterprise Mobility Suite, for its enterprise customers.<\/p>\n<p>September 2016: Blackberry becomes Blackberry Limited and <strong>stops making smartphones and outsource<\/strong> all hardware development and manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112896\" title=\"BlackBerry users plummets to 11 million.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/recession-13.jpg?resize=70%2C70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"BlackBerry users plummets to 11 million.\" width=\"70\" height=\"70\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/recession-13.jpg?w=110&amp;ssl=1 110w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/recession-13.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 70px) 100vw, 70px\" \/>May 2017: The number of BlackBerry <strong>users plummets<\/strong> from 80 million to 11 million.<\/p>\n<p>October 2017: BlackBerry Ltd moved from NASDAQ as BBRY to BB on the NYSE.<\/p>\n<p>November 2018: BlackBerry Limited purchased security firm <a title=\"Cylance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cylance\"><strong>Cylance<\/strong><\/a> for $1.4B.<\/p>\n<p>May 2019: BBM for consumers is shut down.<\/p>\n<p>The Blackberry Limited tweet marks the <strong>end of a line of devices<\/strong> that <strong>revolutionized mobile productivity<\/strong> for the enterprise. For the uninitiated (those under 30) in its heyday, Blackberry set the bar for mobile innovation. BlackBerry smartphones or &#8220;crackberries&#8221; as many referred to them helped set the stage for many of the <strong>mobile features we rely on today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsmarena.com\/blackberry_curve_8320-2121.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112901\" title=\"Blackberry Curve_8320\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/blackberry-curve-8320.gif?resize=72%2C95&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Blackberry Curve_8320\" width=\"72\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/blackberry-curve-8320.gif?resize=113%2C150&amp;ssl=1 113w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/blackberry-curve-8320.gif?resize=57%2C75&amp;ssl=1 57w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 72px) 100vw, 72px\" \/><\/a>The company made its own hardware which included a QWERTY keyboard. Qwerty keyboards that made it easier to fire off emails and instant messages. BlackBerry smartphones were the best way to <strong>stay connected without a laptop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BlackBerry Mobile Services<\/strong> provided business users with quick <strong>encrypted end-to-end email<\/strong> over a low bandwidth connection. BMS also provided users\u00a0access to not only their contacts, calendar, and email, but connected enterprise apps and data.<\/p>\n<p><em>Back in the day when I was sharing technical services we even stood up a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BlackBerry_Enterprise_Server\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Blackberry Enterprise Server<\/strong><\/a> (BES) for our customers to link their BBeries to Exchange. BES was sold as a highly secure BES platform that ensured the content was always encrypted and uncrackable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Holger Mueller, the principal analyst at Constellation Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211127085609\/https:\/\/searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com\/news\/252478076\/BlackBerry-smartphones-pact-will-lapse-marking-end-of-an-era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pointed out<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>TargetTech<\/em><\/a> the <strong>irony of BlackBerry&#8217;s fall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>That&#8217;s the irony &#8212; users and CIOs got rid of [their] BlackBerrys despite email volume being up &#8230; Business users went from being productive on the go to [becoming] lurkers and [doing] email at night.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tuong Nguyen, a senior principal analyst at Gartner, told <em>TargetTech<\/em> the BlackBerry smartphone <strong>relevance disappeared<\/strong> well before this week&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>By the time the company stopped making its own phones, its global smartphone market share was well under 1% .. In fact, they had started dipping under the 1% threshold [around] 2013-2014.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I think the market has space for a productivity-oriented company that respects its users.
