Right? After all, everybody is attached to their mobile phone. In fact, research has shown that millennials check their phones <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221226101300\/https:\/\/www.qualtrics.com\/millennials\/ebooks\/Millennials_And_Tech_At_Home_eBook_All_AK.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">150 times a day<\/a> (PDF). <strong>Why do we check our cell phones so much<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/illinois.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Illinois<\/a> found in a recent study that <strong>37% of women and 30% of men<\/strong> walking down the street have a <strong>smartphone in their hand<\/strong>. The UofI researchers Laura Schaposnik and James Unwin paper <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1804.08753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Phone Walkers: A study of human dependence on inactive mobile devices<\/em><\/a> propose four plausible reasons that pedestrians practice this behavior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Appeasement<\/strong> &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90171429\/a-scientific-mystery-why-we-touch-our-phones-even-if-theyre-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first proposal<\/a> is that we need immediate access to our phones now because so much of our social lives exist on the phone. In particular, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.htc.ca\/2013\/05\/27\/response-time-expectations-in-the-internet-age-how-long-is-too-long\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research suggests<\/a> that people in romantic relationships <strong>expect to be texted back within five minutes<\/strong>. We keep our phones out to appease partners.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210612200706\/https:\/\/blog.safetykart.com\/toilet-ettiqutte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113530\" title=\"anxiety if separated from mobile phones\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_in_can-1-e1584922967478-144x150.jpg?resize=86%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"anxiety if separated from mobile phones\" width=\"86\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_in_can-1-e1584922967478.jpg?resize=144%2C150&amp;ssl=1 144w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_in_can-1-e1584922967478.jpg?resize=72%2C75&amp;ssl=1 72w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_in_can-1-e1584922967478.jpg?w=372&amp;ssl=1 372w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 86px) 100vw, 86px\" \/><\/a>Anxiety<\/strong> &#8211; The researcher&#8217;s next hypothesis was that we might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/611050\/researchers-wonder-what-it-means-when-you-keep-your-phone-out-without-using-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychologically dependent<\/a> on these phones to the point that we <strong>have anxiety if we\u2019re separated from them<\/strong>. The researchers write. \u201c<em>&#8230; the simple manipulation of the object could lead to a corresponding decrease in tension or anxiety &#8230;<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Safety<\/strong> &#8211; Personal safety is another distinct possibility. <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1468-2427.2005.00623.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research has found<\/a> that technology gives young people c<strong>onfidence when facing the potential dangers<\/strong> of crime in a public place. The researchers compared the phenomenon to \u201c<em>displays of affluence by wearing designer fashion clothes or jewelry &#8230; to enhance or affirm a person\u2019s social standing and to <strong>attract a suitable mate.<\/strong><\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.addictiontips.net\/phone-addiction\/phone-addiction-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">addicted to our cell phones<\/a> so what? I have covered the <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-kUs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>germiness<\/strong><\/a><strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-58A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mobiles<\/a><\/strong> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Bach Seat<\/em><\/a> before. But in the wake of recent events, I checked on current thinking and found that <strong>COVID-19 is probably on your mobile<\/strong>. German researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalofhospitalinfection.com\/article\/S0195-6701(20)30046-3\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> (PDF) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210424204629\/https:\/\/www.journalofhospitalinfection.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Journal of Hospital Infection<\/em><\/a> that Coronaviruses can live on inanimate surfaces like metal, glass, or plastic, and remain infectious &#8220;<strong>from 2 hours up to 9 days.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/news\/Did-you-know-that-your-smartphone-holds-20-times-as-many-bacteria-as-a-toilet-seat_id72563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113532\" title=\"Coronaviruses can live on surfaces like metal, glass, or plastic, and remain infectious &quot;from 2 hours up to 9 days.&quot;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_germs1-1-e1584923246410-150x129.jpg?resize=93%2C80&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Coronaviruses can live on surfaces like metal, glass, or plastic, and remain infectious &quot;from 2 hours up to 9 days.&quot;\" width=\"93\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_germs1-1-e1584923246410.jpg?resize=150%2C129&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_germs1-1-e1584923246410.jpg?resize=75%2C65&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cell_germs1-1-e1584923246410.jpg?w=319&amp;ssl=1 319w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 93px) 100vw, 93px\" \/><\/a>Lead researcher G\u00fcnter Kampf, M.D., an associated professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-greifswald.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Greifswald<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a31245938\/phone-coronavirus-disinfect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that a <strong>good strategy for surface disinfection<\/strong> is with a solution that contains 0.1% sodium hypochlorite or 62 to 71% ethanol. Either of these &#8220;<em>significantly reduces coronavirus infectivity on surfaces within 1 min exposure time.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Charles Gerba, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and immunology at The University of Arizona, told <em>Mens Health<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2026What we found \u2026 in office buildings is that you touch a surface with a virus on it and then you place it on your cell phone.&#8221; (A door handle, for example.) \u2026 You then go home or to another location and you touch your phone again a touch a table moving it to another location\u2014great way to spread viruses around an office.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211027224324\/https:\/\/facilityexecutive.com\/2012\/02\/keeping-germs-at-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113534\" title=\"great way to spread viruses around an office\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/germs-1-1.jpg?resize=95%2C73&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"great way to spread viruses around an office\" width=\"95\" height=\"73\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/germs-1-1.jpg?resize=150%2C115&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/germs-1-1.jpg?resize=75%2C57&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/germs-1-1.jpg?w=295&amp;ssl=1 295w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/a>Dr. Kampf warns<em>,<\/em> &#8220;<em>Check with the manufacturer.
