With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unacast.com\/covid19\/social-distancing-scoreboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social distancing<\/a> in place, <strong>millions of more workers<\/strong> around the world started <strong>working from home<\/strong> in March 2020. But WFM is not a new trend. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Computer Economics<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221007200614\/https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/article.cfm?id=2794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that over the past 11 years work from home has grown for many reasons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210415085957\/https:\/\/erpfm.com\/remote-working-with-erp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113652\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" title=\"Working remotely\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/remote_work-2-e1585602577958-98x150.jpg?resize=65%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Working remotely\" width=\"65\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/remote_work-2-e1585602577958.jpg?resize=98%2C150&amp;ssl=1 98w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/remote_work-2-e1585602577958.jpg?resize=666%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 666w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/remote_work-2-e1585602577958.jpg?resize=49%2C75&amp;ssl=1 49w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/remote_work-2-e1585602577958.jpg?resize=768%2C1182&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/remote_work-2-e1585602577958.jpg?resize=998%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 998w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/remote_work-2-e1585602577958.jpg?w=1014&amp;ssl=1 1014w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 65px) 100vw, 65px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the pandemic, the trend toward telecommuting was already well underway according to <em>Computer Economics<\/em>. To measure how much <strong>telecommuting is occurring<\/strong>, they polled <strong>IT managers<\/strong>\u00a0and asked them to estimate the percentage of their total staff that works from home at one of three levels.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2019 report <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221007200614\/https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/article.cfm?id=2794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trends in Telecommuting in the IT Workforce<\/a>, <em>Computer Economics <\/em>found that <strong>92% of IT shops allowed some form of remote work:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>37% \u201conly a <strong>specified amount<\/strong> of time\u201d<\/li>\n<li>35% \u201conly under <strong>special circumstances<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>20% allow personnel to work from home <strong>as they choose<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>8% did <strong>not allow<\/strong> any telecommuting in 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221007200614\/https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/article.cfm?id=2794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-113639\" title=\"Trends in Telecommuting in the IT Workforce, Computer Economics\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFMGROWTH-e1586451701406-150x99.gif?resize=275%2C181&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Trends in Telecommuting in the IT Workforce, Computer Economics\" width=\"275\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFMGROWTH-e1586451701406.gif?resize=150%2C99&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFMGROWTH-e1586451701406.gif?resize=75%2C49&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When <em>Computer Economics<\/em> conducted the same research in <strong>2008, 64% of IT organizations did not allow<\/strong> their personnel to work from home &#8211; at all.<\/p>\n<p><em>Computer Economics <\/em>concludes that even before the pandemic, the <strong>growth of WFM<\/strong> was enabled by a number of <strong>technologies<\/strong>. They cite the growth of <a href=\"https:\/\/broadbandnow.com\/research\/broadband-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-speed internet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/263437\/global-smartphone-sales-to-end-users-since-2007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mobile devices<\/a>, remote access, <a href=\"https:\/\/financesonline.com\/video-web-conferencing-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low-cost web conferencing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200925005124\/https:\/\/www.ameriresearch.com\/product\/voice-over-internet-protocol-voip-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VoIP<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2019-11-13-gartner-forecasts-worldwide-public-cloud-revenue-to-grow-17-percent-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cloud computing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113661\" title=\"three business demands.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/counting-fingers-e1585615992284-150x79.jpg?resize=101%2C53&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"three business demands\" width=\"101\" height=\"53\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/counting-fingers-e1585615992284.jpg?resize=150%2C79&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/counting-fingers-e1585615992284.jpg?resize=75%2C39&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/counting-fingers-e1585615992284.jpg?w=173&amp;ssl=1 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\" \/>WFM growth has been driven by three <strong>business demands<\/strong>. The research firm identified concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/resourcesandtools\/hr-topics\/talent-acquisition\/pages\/flexible-work-critical-retention.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work\/life balance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/hereandnow\/2019\/07\/23\/work-from-home-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workforce retention<\/a>, and business continuity. in the face of a pandemic is just one more benefit of the trend.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Dunlap, research director for <em>Computer Economics<\/em>, wrote in the presser:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Many business leaders are learning a hard lesson &#8230; Having robust, companywide telecommuting capabilities in place\u2014even if only used one or two days a week\u2014should be deployed as a contingency measure during pandemics or other natural disasters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I work for one of the 35% \u201c<strong>special circumstances<\/strong>\u201d firms. At the beginning\u00a0of the month, I submitted a proposal to start to allow &#8220;<strong>specified amount&#8221; <\/strong>telecommuting.
