The publishers of the agile manifesto looked to <strong>overthrow<\/strong> previous <strong>project management methodologies<\/strong>. The agile manifesto authors cast away what they considered burdensome. They looked to <strong>eliminate contracts, plans, and documentation<\/strong>. Along the way, <strong>agile became the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/kurthaeusler.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/26\/10-observations-about-agile-consulting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">consultant-speak<\/a><\/strong> to solve any firm&#8217;s problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/science-small-talk\/201006\/mars-and-venus-the-video-arcade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114115\" title=\"Agile has morphed\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/question-mark_man-4.jpg?resize=71%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Agile has morphed\" width=\"71\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/question-mark_man-4.jpg?resize=59%2C75&amp;ssl=1 59w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/question-mark_man-4.jpg?w=79&amp;ssl=1 79w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 71px) 100vw, 71px\" \/><\/a>Over the years Agile has morphed into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/3271126\/what-is-cicd-continuous-integration-and-continuous-delivery-explained.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CI\/CD<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/newrelic.com\/devops\/what-is-devops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DevOps<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211027164305\/https:\/\/searchsoftwarequality.techtarget.com\/definition\/Extreme-Programming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Extreme Programming<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220122051928\/https:\/\/whatis.techtarget.com\/definition\/kanban\">Kanban<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211208050856\/https:\/\/searchsoftwarequality.techtarget.com\/definition\/lean-programming\">Lean<\/a>, SAFe and <strong>more <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220425103607\/https:\/\/www.solutionsiq.com\/agile-glossary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buzzwords<\/a><\/strong>. The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.agile247.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/VersionOne-10th-Annual-State-of-Agile-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> top agile methods<\/a> employed by organizations include scrum (54%), scrum\/XP Hybrid (10%), custom hybrid (14%), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/resources\/articles\/lkdc-what-is-scrumban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scrumban<\/a> (8%), and kanban (5%).<\/p>\n<p>Agile is a blanket term for a set of methodologies that emphasize collaboration within tightly-knit teams, iterative development, early delivery, continuous improvement, and the ability to respond rapidly to changing requirements. Despite these lofty goals some argue that <strong>agile has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrum.org\/forum\/scrum-forum\/5349\/who-allowed-attend-daily-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">become<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agilealliance.org\/glossary\/daily-meeting\/#q=~(infinite~false~filters~(postType~(~'page~'post~'aa_book~'aa_event_session~'aa_experience_report~'aa_glossary~'aa_research_paper~'aa_video)~tags~(~'daily*20meeting))~searchTerm~'~sort~false~sortDirection~'asc~page~1)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/agile-full-featured-religious-dogma-darius-blasband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dogmatic<\/a><\/strong> as the predecessors it sought to overthrow.<\/p>\n<h3>Backlash against agile<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kanbanzone.com\/2019\/getting-started-with-kanban-part3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114138\" title=\"Agile is a blanket term\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/agile-umbrella.png?resize=91%2C95&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Agile is a blanket term\" width=\"91\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/agile-umbrella.png?resize=144%2C150&amp;ssl=1 144w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/agile-umbrella.png?resize=981%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 981w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/agile-umbrella.png?resize=72%2C75&amp;ssl=1 72w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/agile-umbrella.png?resize=768%2C802&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/agile-umbrella.png?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 91px) 100vw, 91px\" \/><\/a>Recent signs are pointing to a possible <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/agile-headed-backlash-paul-preiss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">backlash against agile<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0California-based IT research firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Computer Economics<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200922064600\/https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/article.cfm?id=2796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that the growth in <strong>agile development is starting to taper off<\/strong>. Adoption was flat year over year, and we may be <strong>closing in on the ceiling for agile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In their report, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200922064600\/https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/article.cfm?id=2796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Agile Development Adoption and Best Practices<\/a><\/em>, Computer Economics found that <strong>60%<\/strong> of survey respondents <strong>practiced agile development in 2019<\/strong>, the <strong>same amount<\/strong> as practiced in <strong>2018<\/strong>. In 2015, only 49% practiced agile, and that figure rose steadily until 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200922064600\/https:\/\/www.computereconomics.com\/article.cfm?id=2796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-114069 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Agile_fgrowth-e1588425721677.gif?resize=388%2C245&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>David Wagner, senior director of research for <em>Computer Economics<\/em> concluded:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Most software developers will tell you that agile is the only way to develop software &#8230; However, when requirements are fairly stable and well-understood, a more traditional development approach may be best. Also, agile works best when developers can be assigned to single projects over a longer period of time which is not always possible, especially in smaller companies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/johnfrady175by43.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/10\/when-your-clothes-are-falling-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114144\" title=\"agile might not be right for them.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/suit_dont_fit-e1589029154693-76x150.jpg?resize=56%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"agile might not be right for them.\" width=\"56\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/suit_dont_fit-e1589029154693.jpg?resize=76%2C150&amp;ssl=1 76w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/suit_dont_fit-e1589029154693.jpg?resize=38%2C75&amp;ssl=1 38w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/suit_dont_fit-e1589029154693.jpg?w=139&amp;ssl=1 139w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 56px) 100vw, 56px\" \/><\/a>Computer Economics concludes that Agile is an important tool for organizations with high-level development needs, such as software and cloud providers. However, for most enterprises that do little custom development, agile might not be right for them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Corporate IT organizations that have not already adopted Agile are expected to slow in adapting it in the future. KPMG <a href=\"https:\/\/files.smart.pr\/f7\/455d40f28111e6a8a237660cbca18a\/KPMG-2017-Survey---Agile-project-delivery.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found<\/a> (PDF) that 63% of business leaders claim that the maturity of agile project management is lower than that of traditional project management.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I always like to follow the money because it leads to interesting places. Here are some factoids around Agile. The project management software market size is projected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparencymarketresearch.com\/pressrelease\/online-project-management-software-market.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reach $6.68 billion<\/a> by 2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Two vendors Microsoft and Atlassian control 54%\u00a0 f the project management software market.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) has the largest project management software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datanyze.com\/market-share\/project-management--217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">market share<\/a> with nearly 30%.<\/em>\n<ol>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/project\/project-management-software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Project<\/a> &#8211; 23.16%<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/devops\/server\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azure DevOps Server<\/a> &#8211; 4.34%<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlassian<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-TEAM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TEAM<\/a>) owns 24% of the project management software market share.<\/em>\n<ol>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/software\/jira\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jira <\/a>&#8211; 18.4% market share<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trello<\/a> &#8211; 5.6% market share<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>If we take these factoids together by 2026<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>MSFT is set to bring in $1.8B in project management software by 2026.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>TEAM is set to bring in $1.7B in project management software by 2026.<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Jira &#8211; set to bring in nearly $1.3B<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trello<\/a> -will bring in nearly $380M<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113127\" title=\"planned obsolescence train\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_hamspter_wheel-e1582824959377-55x75.jpg?resize=81%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"planned obsolescence train\" width=\"81\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_hamspter_wheel-e1582824959377.jpg?resize=55%2C75&amp;ssl=1 55w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_hamspter_wheel-e1582824959377.jpg?resize=110%2C150&amp;ssl=1 110w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_hamspter_wheel-e1582824959377.jpg?w=230&amp;ssl=1 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 81px) 100vw, 81px\" \/>So following the money, it is very likely that intentional obfuscation on the part of corporate marketing machines at MSFT and TEAM to drive changes to PM methodologies in order to keep everyone on the planned obsolescence train and have to update PM and PPM software every year to match the latest agile methodology.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240728154520\/https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fprepare%2Fprevention.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stay safe out there!<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Related article<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Microsoft Reportedly In Talks To Buy Softomotive\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/microsoft-reportedly-in-talks-to-buy-softomotive-1029156647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Reportedly In Talks To Buy Softomotive<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"Business Insider\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Insider<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"Ralph Bach\" href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/new-resume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ralph Bach<\/a>\u00a0has been in IT long enough to know better and has blogged from his\u00a0<a title=\"Bach Seat\" href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach Seat<\/a> about IT, careers, and anything else that catches his attention since 2005.
