\"5G<\/a>During the COVID-19<\/a> lockdowns work from home<\/strong> saw a 34% growt<\/a>h. Gartner<\/a> reports<\/a> that in the post-COVID “new normal<\/strong>” (whenever that is<\/em>) era 74% of businesses will move some of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions. These signals problems for many Detroiters who live in one of America’s worst connected<\/a> areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

\"Verizon<\/a>Verizon may be one part of Detroit moving forward<\/strong> in the “new normal.” FireceWirless<\/em> <\/a>is reporting <\/a>that Verizon<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(VZ<\/a>) is now offering its fixed wireless access<\/strong> (FWA) 5G Home Internet<\/a><\/strong> service in the D. The telco will offer<\/a>\u00a0the 5G Ultra-Wideband Network<\/a><\/strong> in the following areas: Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia, and Troy.<\/p>\r\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t

The Detroit 5G Home service will use millimeter wave<\/strong> (mmWave) spectrum<\/a> and is expected to deliver speeds of about 300 Mbps<\/strong>. There are several factors that affect the speed of 5G<\/strong> networks. Notably, the more people that are connected to a network, the slower speeds will be<\/strong>. Not only that, but your distance to a 5G node<\/strong> may impact speeds too. It also uses the same network the operator is building for mobile 5G which means the FWA product is dependent on mobile 5G being available in your area<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

5G fixed wireless access<\/h3>\r\n

Verizon is working on higher-powered customer premises equipment for 5G Home that’s expected to expand the coverage area supported by the fixed wireless service. But the improved CPE is not part of the initial 5G Home rollout in Motown<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

Detroiters will get a new “enhanced” form of the product which uses industry standard 5G-NR transmission standard<\/a><\/strong> that, among others things, supports a customer self-install model<\/strong> (cost savings\u00a0for VZ<\/em>). Detroiters signing up for 5G Home will get the new router<\/a><\/strong>. The router supports the Wi-Fi 6<\/strong> standard<\/a>, promising peak speeds up to 1 Gbps and allowing multiple devices to run at the same time. It also features Amazon Alexa built-in<\/strong>, so customers can control their smart home devices and ask questions, hands-free.<\/p>\r\n

5G Home service perks<\/p>\r\n

The no-contract 5G Home service <\/strong>starts at $50 per month for Verizon customers and $70 per month for everybody else. The operator is sweetening the deal with an offer of no cost content options to get customers to sign up.
