spent up to <strong>seven hours and 22 minutes on screens each day<\/strong> in 2019\u2014 not including screens used for school work.\u00a0 That was <strong>before the pandemic, which<\/strong> pushed people&#8217;s social lives onto Zoom video chats.\u00a0 <b>There are risks in all that screen time.\u00a0 <\/b>One common concern is the blue light that emanates from digital devices.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwosh.edu\/facstaff\/mihalick\/sciencehistory\/prism.gif\/image_view_fullscreen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114745\" title=\"Prism\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/prism-2.gif?resize=98%2C60&#038;ssl=1\" based on the wavelength frequency and energy levels each color produces.\u00a0 <strong>Blue light is a short wavelength, high-energy<\/strong>, visible (HEV) light.\u00a0 Darker colors, like blue, are the closest to more dangerous UV wavelengths and strength.\u00a0 Lighter colors, like red, are on the opposite end of the spectrum, with longer wavelengths and lower energy levels.<\/p>\r\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-114762 size-large\" title=\"Light spectrum\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/light_spectrum.jpg?resize=480%2C65&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Light spectrum\" width=\"480\" height=\"65\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Blue light can be harmful.<\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>Blue light can be harmful, like<\/strong> too much salt in our diet.\u00a0 Our bodies are naturally adept at absorbing and dealing with blue light exposure, but too much can be harmful.<\/p>\r\n<p>We are surrounded by blue light in our natural environment our whole life.\u00a0 We tend to only worry about <strong>blue light coming from display screens.\u00a0 It<\/strong>\u00a0also comes from:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Naturally, from the sun,<\/li>\r\n<li>Fluorescent lights, and<\/li>\r\n<li>LED light bulbs.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #777777; text-decoration-line: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anandtech.com\/show\/10697\/the-lenovo-thinkpad-x1-yoga-review\/6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114746\" title=\"LED RGB pixels\" href=\"https:\/\/store.hp.com\/us\/en\/tech-takes\/reducing-blue-light-on-your-pc-screen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains<\/a> this is because white light LEDs combine with blue LEDs<strong>\u00a0to create a solid-state light<\/strong> that uses significantly less energy and power than alternative light sources, making it ideal for electronic devices.\u00a0 It These digital devices cause excess blue light exposure, and there are concerns.<\/p>\r\n<p>Our skin doesn&#8217;t have much of a problem dealing with blue light, but our <strong>eyes don&#8217;t have the same level of adaptation<\/strong>.\u00a0 Because the wavelength of blue light is short and powerful, it can <strong>penetrate past the cornea to reach the retina<\/strong>, which is the most light-sensitive part of your eye.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Digital eye strain<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preventblindness.org\/blue-light-and-your-eyes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114743 size-medium\" title=\"Parts of the eye\" exposure is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200812032927\/http:\/\/www.thevisioncouncil.org\/content\/digital-eye-strain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital eye strain<\/a>,<\/strong> also known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/computer-vision-syndrome#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">computer vision syndrome<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/strong>It is caused by staring at a computer screen for too long and may lead to dry, sore, red eyes and blurred vision.\u00a0 HP warns that with prolonged exposure, blue light can harm your eyes and lead to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/amd-macular-degeneration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">macular degeneration<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>You can take some easy steps to avoid permanent damage to your eyesight.\u00a0 Here are several suggestions to control your blue light exposure.\u00a0 Our bodies are naturally conditioned and programmed to fall asleep when it gets dark and wake up when exposed to light.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Medical School<\/a> found that it is essential to <strong>limit your screen time because<\/strong>\u00a0blue light <strong>suppresses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/melatonin-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">melatonin<\/a> <\/strong>for about twice as long as green light and <strong>shifts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/terms\/circadian_rhythm.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">circadian rhythms<\/a><\/strong> by twice as much.<\/p>\r\n<p>The same Harvard study found that <strong>green light<\/strong> may be as hard on your eyes as blue light.\u00a0 The researchers warn that the two lights are similar in strength, and there are few remedies for green light exposure.\u00a0 Limiting screen time\u2014even if you use a blue light filter is important.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Optometry-Organizations.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" inability to change focus from far to near.\u00a0 Regular comprehensive eye exams are important to maintaining eye health, no matter how much time you spend in front of screens.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you already have prescription glasses, move to multi-focal lenses and have your optometrist add a <strong>blue light filter<\/strong>.\u00a0 If not, &#8220;cheaters&#8221; from the drugstore may be enough\u2014for a while.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>Blinking<\/h3>\r\n<p>Blinking is our body&#8217;s natural defense.\u00a0 It lubricates and cleans our eyes.\u00a0 Typically, we blink 10 to 20 times per minute.\u00a0 However, <a href=\"https:\/\/visionsource.com\/blog\/are-you-blinking-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies<\/a> have shown that our blink rate drops when we concentrate<strong>.\u00a0 We only blink 3 to 8 times per minute<\/strong> when reading, watching TV, or looking at a computer screen.\u00a0 Dry eyes are irritated eyes.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Take time to rest your eyes every 20 minutes.\u00a0 Look away from the computer and focus on something distant\u2014like out a window.<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" screen filters are the easiest and best way to reduce your blue light exposure.\u00a0 Some are just a clear piece of plastic <strong>material that covers your monitor.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>Blue light filtering glasses<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201028152207\/https:\/\/www.legacysupply.co\/how-blue-light-computer-glasses-work-and-what-to-look-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114764\" title=\"blue light filtering glasses\"
