I use a Windows 10 machine for work and an <strong>Apple Macbook<\/strong> for personal business like working on the <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Bach Seat<\/em><\/a>. For a while the performance of the Mac Apps were terrible &#8211; the $%&amp;(% <strong>jumping icons<\/strong> while <strong>waiting for an app to load<\/strong> &#8211; Word, Excel, Chrome, Firefox &#8211; was driving me nuts.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114767 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Apple logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_apple_logo.jpg?resize=67%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Apple logo\" width=\"67\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_apple_logo.jpg?resize=67%2C75&amp;ssl=1 67w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_apple_logo.jpg?resize=135%2C150&amp;ssl=1 135w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_apple_logo.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 67px) 100vw, 67px\" \/><\/a>After investigating a myriad of other reasons the\u00a0<strong>Mac Apps were running slow<\/strong>, I came across this hint. <strong>Reset the SMC<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple Support<\/a>, the SMC is the Macbook System Management Controller on Intel-based Macbook&#8217;s. The SMC is responsible for:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Responding to presses of the power button<\/li>\r\n<li>Responding to the display lid opening and closing<\/li>\r\n<li>Battery management<\/li>\r\n<li>Thermal management<\/li>\r\n<li>Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS)<\/li>\r\n<li><span id=\"urn:enhancement-9e8c80d9-8a35-0c65-6d75-80b988af58cf\" class=\"textannotation\"><span id=\"urn:enhancement-0c242ae9-e95c-0ffe-5d9f-9762074efbae\" class=\"textannotation\"><span id=\"urn:enhancement-978fc6cc-4eaf-a00d-0576-b1ce00dd8d9f\" class=\"textannotation\"><span id=\"urn:enhancement-05217f46-fef3-cde6-49a9-ab1cc90dafd0\" class=\"textannotation\"><span id=\"urn:enhancement-dcde650f-91c5-4c86-3f50-fa5d0b186309\" class=\"textannotation\">Ambient<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> light sensing<\/li>\r\n<li>Keyboard backlighting<\/li>\r\n<li>Status indicator light (SIL) management<\/li>\r\n<li>Battery status indicator lights<\/li>\r\n<li>Selecting an external (instead of internal) video source<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Those all really sound like hardware problems &#8211; but it also fixed my very long application load time.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how to reset the SMC:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114997\" title=\"reset the SMC\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?resize=164%2C97&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"reset the SMC\" width=\"164\" height=\"97\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?resize=150%2C88&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?resize=1024%2C604&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?resize=75%2C44&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?resize=768%2C453&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?resize=1536%2C906&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?w=1560&amp;ssl=1 1560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/reset_smc_kb.png?w=1440&amp;ssl=1 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><\/a>Shut down the computer<\/li>\r\n<li>Plugin the power adapter<\/li>\r\n<li>Press the Shift + Control + Option keys and the power button at the same time<\/li>\r\n<li>Release all the keys and the power button simultaneously<\/li>\r\n<li>Press the power button to turn on your Mac<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><em>If you\u2019ve updated your <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MacOS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2017\/03\/11\/become-tech-savvy-how-to-approach-updating-software-mac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">applications<\/a>, run a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/2\/12\/21134681\/mac-pc-virus-malware-malwarebytes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">malware check<\/a>, and flushed caches &#8211;
