Mr. English built <strong>the first mouse in 1963<\/strong>, in collaboration with his colleague Doug Engelbart while they were working on at the <strong>Stanford Research Institute<\/strong> (now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sri.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SRI Internationa<\/a>l).<\/p>\r\n<h3>Wood mouse<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_English_(computer_engineer)#\/media\/File:SRI_Computer_Mouse.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115078\" title=\"First mouse\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mouse_first.jpg?resize=110%2C52&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"First mouse\" width=\"110\" height=\"52\" \/><\/a>The first version of the mouse was contained in a <strong>wood case<\/strong>. The mouse consisted of two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potentiometer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potentiometers<\/a> &#8211; <strong>rolling wheels<\/strong> at 90-degree angles that would interpret the wheels\u2019 X and Y coordinates &#8211; <strong>vertical and horizontal positions<\/strong> &#8211; of the wheels as they moved across a desktop. Prior to the development of the mouse laborious and error-prone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/cu\/computinghistory\/029.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keypunch cards<\/a> or manually set electronic switches were necessary to control computers. <em>&#8220;We were working on text editing &#8211; the goal was a device that would be able to select characters and words,<\/em>&#8221; Mr. English told the <a href=\"https:\/\/computerhistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Computer History Museum<\/a> in 1999.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mr. English explained in an interview, that he could remember who decided the call the device &#8220;mouse&#8221; &#8211; or exactly why&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In the first report, we had to call it something. &#8216;A brown box with buttons&#8217; didn&#8217;t work &#8230; It had to be a short name. It&#8217;s a very obvious short name.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>The mother of all demos<\/h3>\r\n<p>D<a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2020\/08\/03\/william-english-computer-mouse-co-creator-has-passed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-115079 size-medium alignright\" title=\"William English\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/english_william-e1596571661293-150x136.jpg?resize=150%2C136&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/english_william-e1596571661293.jpg?resize=150%2C136&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/english_william-e1596571661293.jpg?resize=75%2C68&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/english_william-e1596571661293.jpg?w=579&amp;ssl=1 579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>uring 1968, in what some have described as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yJDv-zdhzMY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the mother of all demos<\/a>&#8221; the<strong> mouse made its public debut<\/strong>. The mouse was a part of a demo by Mr. Engelbart, at a computer conference in San Francisco. He used SRI&#8217;s connection to the <span id=\"ref672434\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-t04\">Advanced Research Projects Agency Network<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>ARPANET<\/strong>), the primary\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/precursor\" data-term=\"precursor\">precursor<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/Internet\">Internet<\/a> to show off a working r<strong>eal-time collaborative <a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/computer\">computer system<\/a><\/strong> known as NLS (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhope.com\/jargon\/n\/nls.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oN-Line System<\/a>). Using NLS, the colleagues publicly demonstrated many of the technologies we take for granted today &#8211;\u00a0 <strong>video conferencing, multi-person document collaboration, screen-sharing<\/strong> and an early form of <strong>hypertext<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mr. English left SRI in 1971, moving to <strong>Xerox&#8217;s PARC research center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techspot.com\/guides\/477-xerox-parc-tech-contributions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PARC<\/a>)<\/strong>. At PARC, he continued to develop the features of the NLS into the <a href=\"https:\/\/history-computer.com\/technology\/xerox-alto-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alto<\/a>, including replacing the wheels on the original mouse design with a rolling ball &#8211; the design that became familiar to most end users over the next decades.<\/p>\r\n<p>From here, the story is well known\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/bc-digest\/the-xerox-thieves-steve-jobs-bill-gates-6e1b36fc1ec4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both toured PARC<\/a>, both saw the Alto, and implemented much of into their own products.<\/p>\r\n<h3>No money for the developers<\/h3>\r\n<p>Neither Mr. English nor Mr. Engelbart were made wealthy by their invention. The mouse was patented but owned by their employer &#8211; and the intellectual property rights expired in 1987 before the mouse became one of the most common tech devices on the planet.
