It employs 24.6 million people and is often the only employer in areas where wildlife thrives. The tourism business has helped curb poaching in several ways. First, tourists act as a deterrent to poachers. However, with fewer tourists, there are fewer tourist vehicles in parks. At many of the reserves more than <strong>half of the budget comes from tourism revenues<\/strong>. Matt Brown, with The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/about-us\/where-we-work\/africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nature Conservancy&#8217;s Africa program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/conservationists-fear-african-animal-poaching-increase-covid-19\/story?id=70118142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC News<\/a><\/em> that tourist fees support rangers. Fees such as bed-night, and conservation fees help pay for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/protecting-elephants-poachers-zimbabwe-female-army\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rangers<\/a>&#8216; salaries. The fees also pay fuel for airplane patrols, and more &#8211; hampering security and opening the game reserves to poachers.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>Vulnerable to poaching<\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>Without money to support the rangers<\/strong> \u2014 and the highly endangered animals they protect &#8211; <strong>elephants gorillas and rhinos \u2014 are left vulnerable to poachers<\/strong>. The amount of poaching is on the rise because COVID-19 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/2020\/04\/wildlife-safaris-halted-for-covid-boost-poaching-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduced funding<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-020-1275-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">law enforcement in wildlife areas<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.productfocus.com\/taming-the-rhino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115192\" title=\"highly organized illegal poaching threatens rhinos,\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RHINO-e1598118555389-138x150.jpg?resize=83%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"highly organized illegal poaching threatens rhinos,\" width=\"83\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RHINO-e1598118555389.jpg?resize=138%2C150&amp;ssl=1 138w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RHINO-e1598118555389.jpg?resize=69%2C75&amp;ssl=1 69w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RHINO-e1598118555389.jpg?w=487&amp;ssl=1 487w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 83px) 100vw, 83px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/24\/coronavirus-poachers-kill-more-animals-as-tourism-to-africa-plummets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that highly organized illegal poaching threatens to send African wildlife<strong> into extinction<\/strong> over the next several decades. Most vulnerable to extinction are the <strong>black and white rhinos, lions, and elephants<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/species\/black-rhino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">black rhino<\/a> population has plummeted 97.6% since 1960. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/learn\/wildlife\/african-lions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lion<\/a> population is down 43% in the last 21 years, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Wildlife Fund<\/a>. At least 35,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/species\/african-elephant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">African elephants<\/a> are killed each year. There are only 1,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/species\/mountain-gorilla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mountain gorillas<\/a> and 2,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/mammals\/g\/grevy-s-zebra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grevy\u2019s zebras<\/a> that remain on the continent.<\/p>\r\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jun\/02\/six-elephants-killed-in-one-day-by-poachers-in-ethiopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>, six elephants were killed on one June day in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalparks-worldwide.com\/eaf\/ethiopia\/national-parks\/south-west\/mago-national-park.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ethiopia\u2019s Mago National Park<\/a>. That compares to 10 in that nation for all of 2019. Officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jun\/02\/six-elephants-killed-in-one-day-by-poachers-in-ethiopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suspect<\/a> that <strong>most elephant tusks and finished products are shipped to China<\/strong> and south-east Asian countries. To make matters worst, in 2017 the <strong>Trump administration rolled back the ban on hunting elephants. The Trump policy<\/strong> allows elephant remains <a class=\"hckui__typography__linkBlue\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/u-s-lifts-ban-on-some-elephant-trophy-imports?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI16uFsuyH6wIVYgnnCh0sbg41EAAYASAAEgK81fD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">to be imported into the United States.<\/a>\u00a0Conservationists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/environment\/wildlife-endangered-species-rhinos-elephants-pangolins-jaguars-giraffes-a9644756.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">believe<\/a> that <strong>elephants in the wild could be extinct within 10 years<\/strong> due primarily to poaching.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>Using IoT\u00a0to protect elephants<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210419223915\/https:\/\/www.wildlabs.net\/community\/thread\/677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115178\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" title=\" OpenCollar, an open-source modular animal-tracking collar system for wildlife monitoring\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/opencollar.jpg?resize=110%2C79&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\" OpenCollar, an open-source modular animal-tracking collar system for wildlife monitoring\" width=\"110\" height=\"79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/opencollar.jpg?resize=150%2C108&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/opencollar.jpg?resize=75%2C54&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/opencollar.jpg?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>Extinction does not have to be the &#8220;<strong>new normal.<\/strong>&#8221; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fierceelectronics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FierceElectronics<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fierceelectronics.com\/electronics\/elephantedge-aims-to-protect-species-from-poaching-via-advanced-tracking-collar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> on a collaboration using <strong>Internet of Things<\/strong> (IoT) technologies to protect elephants in the wild from extinction by developing a <strong>next-generation elephant tracking collar<\/strong>. The collaboration between Phoenix-based electronic components firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avnet.com\/wps\/portal\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avnet&#8217;s<\/a> developer community <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackster.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hackster.io<\/a>, and conservation group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartparks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smart Parks<\/a> which focuses on technology to protect endangered species, are running a design competition called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackster.io\/contests\/ElephantEdge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ElephantEdge<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23elephantedge&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ElephantEdge<\/a> challenge asks developers to leverage the <strong>Internet of Things<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220327042857\/https:\/\/internetofthingsagenda.techtarget.com\/definition\/Internet-of-Things-IoT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IoT<\/a>) technologies that can help humans protect elephants from extinction. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23elephantedge&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ElephantEdge<\/a> will combine software, machine learning (ML), and hardware to build the next generation elephant collars. gorillas, rhinos, lions, and polar bears which cannot protect themselves from extinction<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>Nobody is going to get rich doing this work &#8211; challenge winners will receive an Apple Watch 3 and a collectible t-shirt as prizes &#8211; but <strong>the world will be a better place<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>By the end of 2020, ten next-generation elephant collars will be produced for Smart Parks to deploy in selected African parks, in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund.
