Globally, 80% of consumers have used computers to get access to the Web within the previous seven days. Sixty percent used their mobile devices to do so. 25% of US <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mobile_Web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">mobile web<\/a> users only access the web from their mobile phones.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a title=\"Angry Birds know where you live\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121003000009\/http:\/\/www.net-security.org:80\/secworld.php?id=11916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Angry Birds know where you live<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.angrybirds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103528 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Angry Birds know where you live\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/angry-birds.png?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Angry Birds know where you live\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/angry-birds.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/angry-birds.png?w=150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>75% of the public may be giving away their physical location when downloading smartphone applications, according to mobile security vendor <a title=\"AdaptiveMobile\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adaptivemobile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AdaptiveMobile<\/a>. 69% of smartphone users say such privacy breaches are unacceptable, yet <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121003000009\/http:\/\/www.net-security.org:80\/secworld.php?id=11916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Help Net Security<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"www.net-security.org\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121003000009\/http:\/\/www.net-security.org:80\/secworld.php?id=11916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that 75% fail to read the terms and conditions, which include access to data such as their physical location.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Consumers are outraged that their data may not be secure but are unwilling to protect themselves,<\/em>&#8221; AdaptiveMobile VP of Handset Security, <a title=\"www.linkedin.com\" href=\"http:\/\/ie.linkedin.com\/in\/ciaranbradley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ciaran Bradley<\/a> says in the article. &#8220;<em>We are downloading more apps than ever before, but people are unaware that their location and other information can be harvested by applications.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>AdaptiveMobile research has shown that common applications including <a title=\"Angry Birds\" href=\"https:\/\/www.angrybirds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Angry Birds<\/a>, <a title=\"Jaws\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170507035835\/https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/jaws\/id386656261?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaws<\/a>, and <a title=\"Paper Toss\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Backflip_Studios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Paper Toss<\/a> have access to information including location coordinates and owner\u2019s name, which can be shared with up to 17 different external domains including advertisers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Consumers and the wider mobile industry need to become savvier about the information which is shared by apps,<\/em>&#8221; Mike Hawkes, Chairman of The <a title=\"Mobile Data Association\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140405013437\/http:\/\/www.themda.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Mobile Data Association<\/a> told <em>Help Net Security<\/em>. &#8220;It is becoming commonplace that <a title=\"Personally identifiable information\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personally_identifiable_information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">personal information<\/a> is shared with advertisers and developers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bradley told <em>Help Net Security<\/em> that <a title=\"iPhone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iPhone<\/a> users are the most careless, with 65% completely unaware that free applications may compromise their privacy. <a title=\"Windows Phone 7\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110823124123\/http:\/\/www.windowsphone7.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Windows Phone<\/a> users are more responsible, with 29% promising to stop downloading free applications if they had any doubt that their personal information was not safe. But the company is apparently proving experts wrong, including me (<em>I wrote about the Cius <a title=\"rbach.net\" href=\"http:\/\/rbachnet.wwwmi3-ss40.a2hosted.com\/index.php\/cisco-takes-on-apple-to-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"rbach.net\" href=\"http:\/\/rbachnet.wwwmi3-ss40.a2hosted.com\/index.php\/tablet-notes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/em>) because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cisco<\/a>&#8216;s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-CSCO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CSCO<\/a>) tablets are doing well enough that the company plans to release two new form factors next year, including a 10-inch version <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cisco-plans-two-new-tablets-for-next-year-2011-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>BusinessInsider<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Product manager Chuck Fontana told the <em>BusinessInsider<\/em> that 1,000 companies have already bought the tablet, He wouldn&#8217;t share device unit sales, but some deployments are in the hundreds, and one company plans to buy 1,500 for its mobile sales force. The tablets are sold as part of a broader communications package and include <a title=\"www.cisco.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/en\/US\/products\/ps7060\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cisco&#8217;s teleconferencing and collaboration<\/a> services.<\/p>\n<p>But underneath they&#8217;re straight <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) <a title=\"www.crunchbase.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/company\/android\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android<\/a> tablets and can run any Android app. To prevent employees from downloading malware-infested or low-quality apps, Cisco has rolled out a custom <a title=\"App Store\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111004063343\/http:\/\/www.apple.com:80\/iphone\/apps-for-iphone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">app store<\/a> called <a title=\"marketplace.cisco.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180521144218\/https:\/\/marketplace.cisco.com\/apphq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AppHQ<\/a>, where every app is vetted.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>BusinessInsider<\/em> says the Cius is an interesting demonstration of how the relative openness of Android versus <a title=\"IOS (Apple)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iOS<\/a> is helping it gain traction in surprising places. Cisco didn&#8217;t go to quite the lengths that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMZN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMZN<\/a>) did with the <a title=\"Amazon Kindle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Kindle<\/a> <a title=\"www.amazon.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0051VVOB2\/ref=famstripe_kf\/185-4824097-2157933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fire<\/a>, where it basically forked Android and created a custom OS. But Android is open enough that Cisco could build its own app store and ship it with its own apps front and center.<\/p>\n<p>That couldn&#8217;t have worked with <a title=\"iPad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">the iPad<\/a>, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) controls the experience.<\/p>\n<p>So would Cisco consider offering a <a title=\"www.tomshardware.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/news\/windows-8-tablet-touch-win8-Forrester,14124.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows tablet<\/a> instead once <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) <a title=\"windows.microsoft.com\" href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows-8\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows 8<\/a> comes out?\u00a0 &#8220;<em>No,<\/em>&#8221; said Fontana, &#8220;<em>we&#8217;re not looking to do anything from a Windows perspective. When asked which operating system they&#8217;d like on it, 48% said <a title=\"Windows\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/WINDOWS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Windows<\/a>, well ahead of <a title=\"IOS (Apple)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iOS<\/a> (16%) and <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google&#8217;s<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) <a title=\"www.android.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.android.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android<\/a> (9%). The second most popular choice was &#8220;undecided&#8221; with 16%.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Forrester asked the same question of a different group of 2,229 consumers. This time, iOS came in number one with 28% of the vote. Windows had only 25%, and Android was at 18%. A whole 24% were still undecided.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, interest in Windows tablets dropped 21 percentage points in six months.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>BusinessInsider<\/em> says the study is probably a bit skewed but says the data shows a real perception shift: consumers are thinking of tablets more like smartphones and less like PCs.
