Earlier this week, they dredged the shipping container-size data center of 864 servers and 27.6 petabytes of storage back to the surface. Now that it <strong>has resurfaced<\/strong> &#8211; <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) researchers are studying how it survived its trip into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/maritime-history\/the-story-behind-the-term-davy-jones-locker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Davy Jone&#8217;s locker<\/a> and the trip can tell us about land-loving data centers.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Lower failure rate<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114766\" title=\"Microsoft logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Microsoft_icon-2.jpg?resize=48%2C50&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Microsoft logo\" width=\"48\" height=\"50\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Microsoft_icon-2.jpg?resize=73%2C75&amp;ssl=1 73w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Microsoft_icon-2.jpg?resize=145%2C150&amp;ssl=1 145w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Microsoft_icon-2.jpg?w=176&amp;ssl=1 176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 48px) 100vw, 48px\" \/><\/a>Their first conclusion is that the cylinder with servers packed in like sardines had a <strong>lower failure rate<\/strong> than a conventional data center. Only eight out of the 855 servers on board had failed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/bcutler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ben Cutler<\/a>, a project manager in Microsoft\u2019s Special Projects research group who leads <a href=\"https:\/\/natick.research.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Project Natick<\/a>, said in a presser,<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Our failure rate in the water is one-eighth of what we see on land.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>The MSFT team is speculating that the greater reliability may be connected to the fact that there were <strong>no humans on board<\/strong>.\u00a0 Microsoft\u2019s John Roach <a href=\"https:\/\/datacenternews.asia\/story\/microsoft-s-underwater-data-center-comes-up-for-air\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">explained<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/dnfsecurity.com\/shipment-damage-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115394\" title=\"people bump and jostle components,\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/server_damage.jpg?resize=110%2C70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"people bump and jostle components,\" width=\"110\" height=\"70\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/server_damage.jpg?resize=150%2C96&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/server_damage.jpg?resize=75%2C48&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/server_damage.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>The team hypothesizes that the atmosphere of nitrogen, which is less corrosive than oxygen, and the absence of people to bump and jostle components, are the primary reasons for the difference. All of Orkney&#8217;s electricity comes from alternate power sources, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/scotlands-tide-and-wave-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>wind and solar power<\/strong><\/a>, which was not a problem for the underwater data center &#8220;Northern Isles.&#8221; <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/sfowers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Fowers<\/a>, Microsoft\u2019s Special Projects research group principal member of technical staff,<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We have been able to run really well on what most land-based data centers consider an unreliable grid.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112708\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack_o-money.jpg?resize=65%2C59&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"65\" height=\"59\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack_o-money.jpg?resize=75%2C68&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack_o-money.jpg?w=150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 65px) 100vw, 65px\" \/>Not only can data centers run on alternative power, but they may <strong>not need the huge investment<\/strong> in dedicated buildings, rooms of batteries, and racks of UPS&#8217;s. Microsoft&#8217;s Fowers speculates;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We are hopeful that we can look at our findings and say maybe we don&#8217;t need to have quite as much infrastructure focused on power and reliability.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>Underwater data center availability<\/h3>\r\n<p>Microsoft has clammed up about the availability of an underwater data center SKU, but MSFT&#8217;s Cutler is confident that it has proved the idea has value;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We think that we&#8217;re past the point where this is a science experiment &#8230; Now it&#8217;s simply a question of what do we want to engineer &#8211; would it be a little one, or would it be a large one?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>The drive to <strong>autonomous vehicles<\/strong> is just one case that explains MSFT&#8217;s idea of micro-self-contained data centers vs. mega-data centers. Even with 5G &#8211;\u00a0 <strong>computing power will have to move closer to the user,<\/strong> to the edge of the network.
