With Gutenberg&#8217;s printing press the compositor (\u201cperson who sets the type or text for printing\u201d) stored the <strong>individual pieces of metal type in boxes called cases<\/strong>. The <strong>smaller letters<\/strong> (along with the type for punctuation and spaces), which were used most often, were kept <strong>in a lower case<\/strong> that was easier to reach. <strong>Capital letters<\/strong>, which were used less frequently, were kept in an <strong>upper case<\/strong>. The <strong>National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NIST<\/a>) now recommends everyone use longer<strong> passwords<\/strong> or passphrases of 15 or more characters <strong>without requiring uppercase, lowercase or special characters<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/csrc.nist.gov\/publications\/detail\/sp\/800-63b\/final\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NIST 800-63B<\/a> says enforcing unnecessary password complexity requiring a mix of special characters, numbers and uppercase letters is a practice that can stop.<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>The distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters doesn&#8217;t exist in all languages, though.
