Matt Mullenweg, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/automattic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Automattic<\/a>, the parent company of <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">WordPress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tumblr<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ma.tt\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-remote-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">blogged<\/a>, &#8220;<em>This might be a chance for a great <strong>reset in terms of how we work<\/strong>.<\/em>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Slack<\/a> co-founder and CEO Stewart Butterfield <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20201023-coronavirus-how-will-the-pandemic-change-the-way-we-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>BBC<\/em><\/a> \u201c<em>We all know that <strong>work will never be the same<\/strong>, even if we don\u2019t yet know all the ways in which it will be different.\u201d <\/em>Recent reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.owllabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Owl Labs<\/a> and staffing firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roberthalf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Robert Half<\/a> put numbers to what many have sensed &#8211; the <strong>nature of work has changed to work from anywhere.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<h3>Work from anywhere benefits<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114951\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?resize=110%2C71&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"71\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?resize=150%2C96&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?resize=75%2C48&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?w=546&amp;ssl=1 546w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/>T<\/a>he <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220121081215\/https:\/\/owllabs.com\/state-of-remote-work\/2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Owl Labs State of Remote Work report<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220309002106\/https:\/\/www.roberthalf.com\/sites\/default\/files\/documents_not_indexed\/2021_Salary_Guide_Technology_NA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Robert Half 2021 Salary Guide<\/a> (PDF) looked at work from anywhere. The reports found unexpected benefits and challenges. Employee expectations have shifted as <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220121081215\/https:\/\/owllabs.com\/state-of-remote-work\/2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">69% of full-time workers<\/a> in the U.S. are working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The change in the nature of work has<strong> benefits for employees and employers<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Employees<\/strong> are seeing economic and personal benefits from the change in the nature of work. Owl Labs reports that workers are <strong>saving almost $479.20 per month<\/strong> on additional expenses related to work. That is nearly $6,000.00 a year savings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/policyinformation\/travel_monitoring\/tvt.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Federal Highway Administration<\/a> reports that U.S. <strong>road traffic fell by more than 25%<\/strong> during the lockdowns. Traffic levels dell to the lowest level <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/22842\/total-vehicle-miles-traveled-on-us-roads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">since 1995<\/a>. As a result, Owl Labs found that the average WFM employee <strong>saving 40 minutes per day on the daily commute. <\/strong>That totals to over <strong>three workdays per month<\/strong> which can be dedicated to personal objectives.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Work-life balance<\/h3>\r\n<p>Remote work has mental health and work-life balance benefits, too.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/creazilla-store.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/cliparts\/59001\/balance-elephant-clipart-md.png?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115635\" title=\"work-life balance\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/work_life_balance.png?resize=72%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"work-life balance\" width=\"72\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/work_life_balance.png?resize=109%2C150&amp;ssl=1 109w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/work_life_balance.png?resize=54%2C75&amp;ssl=1 54w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/work_life_balance.png?w=579&amp;ssl=1 579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 72px) 100vw, 72px\" \/><\/a>77% of respondents told Owl Labs that having the option to work from home would <strong>make them happier<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<li>77% report that working remotely would make them better able to <strong>manage work-life balance<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<li>72% of all survey respondents agreed that the ability to work remotely would make them <strong>less stressed<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>In 2013 old-school Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2013\/feb\/25\/yahoo-chief-bans-working-home#:~:text=Surfing%20the%20web%20from%20at,to%20Yahoo%27s%20thousands%20of%20staff.&amp;text=%22Speed%20and%20quality%20are%20often,when%20we%20work%20from%20home.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a>, \u201c<em>Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home.<\/em>\u201d She was wrong.<strong> Employers\u00a0are also gaining benefits<\/strong> from the new work from anywhere. 20% of employees told Owl Labs they <strong>worked more hours<\/strong> per week during the pandemic &#8211;<strong> for the same pay<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theblogforbusinesslaw.com\/major-changes-coming-to-management-and-overtime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115636\" title=\"working more hours per week during the pandemic\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?resize=110%2C76&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"working more hours per week during the pandemic\" width=\"110\" height=\"76\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?resize=150%2C104&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?resize=1024%2C708&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?resize=75%2C52&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?resize=768%2C531&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?resize=1536%2C1062&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?w=1666&amp;ssl=1 1666w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/overtime.jpg?w=1440&amp;ssl=1 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>During COVID, the average work from anywhere employees worked an <strong>extra 26 hours each month. <\/strong>Which is nearly an extra day every week. Despite claims to the contrary from old-school managers, worker productivity has improved. 75% of people\u00a0working from home report they are the <strong>same or more productive<\/strong> during COVID-19. In 2020, people are using video meetings 50% more than pre-COVID-19.<\/p>\r\n<p>Being able to work remotely some of the time also makes the <strong>employers more attractive<\/strong> to staff. Respondents told the researchers that with remote work:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>80% would feel like their <strong>employer cares<\/strong>,<\/li>\r\n<li>74% would be<strong> less likely to leave<\/strong> their employer,<\/li>\r\n<li>59% would be more likely to <strong>choose one employer over another<\/strong> in their next job if they offered remote work.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/all-free-download.com\/free-vector\/download\/man-using-binoculars-clip-art_19617.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115638\" title=\"look for another role that allowed remote work\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-using-binoculars-2-e1603754532616-150x125.jpg?resize=95%2C79&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"look for another role that allowed remote work\" width=\"95\" height=\"79\" \/><\/a>If working from anywhere was no longer an option after COVID-19, almost 70% of respondents would be less happy. Almost <strong>half would look for another role that allowed remote work<\/strong>. Robert Half found that 60% of workers want to work for an organization that <strong>values its staff during unpredictable times<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/>80% of full-time workers told Owl Labs they expect to <strong>work from anywhere at least three times per week<\/strong> after the lockdown. Robert Half also found that 74% of employees want to work remotely more frequently following the pandemic.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Increase surveillance<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"body\">Of course, this is not all puppy dogs and rainbows. Employers may <strong>increase surveillance of WFH staff<\/strong>. Firms uncomfortable with the work from anywhere movement can turn to software track employees. Productivity monitoring is available from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awarehq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.awarehq.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1603844381653000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHx2vzUALahslOYXEPGzADAXM-fww\">Aware<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/activtrak.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/activtrak.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1603844381653000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFO2Ts613IezYohOy2c5-xusx5fwg\">ActivTrak<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timedoctor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.timedoctor.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1603844381653000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGGxZBXXxkT2HIG4bh7RyjVgRkJ3g\">Time Doctor<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teramind.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.teramind.co\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1603844381654000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG8ZlvPxVoLGj5RC8k-FWSjnztphQ\">Teramind<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">PwC<\/a> has developed a <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.personneltoday.com\/hr\/pwc-facial-recognition-tool-criticised-for-home-working-privacy-invasion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><strong>facial recognition<\/strong> tool<\/a> that logs when employees are away from their computer screens while working from home.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"body\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/vectors\/screen-monitor-computer-pc-1315650\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115641\" title=\"increased surveillance of WFH staff\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/employee_monitoring.png?resize=95%2C81&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"increased surveillance of WFH staff\" width=\"95\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/employee_monitoring.png?resize=150%2C128&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/employee_monitoring.png?resize=1024%2C870&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/employee_monitoring.png?resize=75%2C64&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/employee_monitoring.png?resize=768%2C653&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/employee_monitoring.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/employee_monitoring.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a> reports that interest in Teramind&#8217;s product has tripled during the pandemic. When Teramind\u2019s \u201cagent\u201d is downloaded to employees\u2019 computers, they can measure employee time spent on different windows. It can playback or live-stream a view of an employee\u2019s screen and record their every keystroke. It can also raise a flag if certain predetermined words are typed. Eli Sutton, the firm\u2019s head of operations <a href=\"https:\/\/getpocket.com\/explore\/item\/end-of-the-office-the-quiet-grinding-loneliness-of-working-from-home?utm_source=pocket-newtab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> the paper that <strong>70% of Teramind\u2019s clients are concerned about productivity.<\/strong> He said, \u201c<em>Teramind is an extra set of eyes to make sure distractions aren\u2019t causing issues.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Forty-three percent of survey respondents told Owl Labs that if their employer started monitoring their WFH activity as a way to track productivity they <strong>would be unhappy or leave.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><em>Having an expanded remote workforce alters the dynamics of work. Employees will no longer be bound by geography to find the best opportunity. Employers can expand their pool of candidates.
