{"id":115656,"date":"2020-10-30T21:43:50","date_gmt":"2020-10-31T01:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbach.net\/?p=115656"},"modified":"2021-12-20T13:26:23","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T18:26:23","slug":"wordpress-botched-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/wordpress-botched-it\/","title":{"rendered":"WordPress Botched it"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-115659\" title=\"WordPress Botched it\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_face_palm1-e1604107168495.jpg?resize=85%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"WordPress Botched it\" width=\"85\" height=\"100\" \/>Imagine my surprise when I got a notification this morning (10\/30\/2020) at 11:42AM (local time)\u00a0 &#8211; <strong>Your site has been updated to WordPress 5.5.3-alpha-49449. has been updated automatically to WordPress 5.5.3-alpha-49449. <\/strong>No further action is needed on your part.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Say what?!?<\/p>\r\n<p>WordPress botched an update and auto-updated sites from the standard release channel to a development alpha channel &#8211; with no warning or reason.<\/p>\r\n<p><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200923024618\/https:\/\/askandroids.com\/bug-in-wordpress-3-5-that-allows-sql-injection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-115660 size-full\" title=\"WordPress bug\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WordPress_Bug.png?resize=124%2C124&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"WordPress bug\" width=\"124\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WordPress_Bug.png?w=124&amp;ssl=1 124w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WordPress_Bug.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/><\/a><br \/>According to WordPress Development, it&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/core.trac.wordpress.org\/ticket\/51679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">bug<\/a>. Not only did they move my site from the standard release channel to a dev release channel which gets updated every night. They also added back all of the 20xx WordPress default themes &#8211; Which I had already deleted.<\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"profile-link\" href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/hellofromtonya\">@<span class=\"username\" data-username=\"hellofromTonya\" data-nicename=\"hellofromtonya\"><span class=\"trac-author\">hellofromTonya<\/span><\/span><\/a> at WordPress.org reports that the unwanted update is, &#8220;<em>a side effect of another issue that occurred on 5.5.2.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\r\n<p>WP says there are 2 options to resolve this problem:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><em>Click the Re-install WordPress button on the Update screen to reinstall 5.5.2<\/em><\/li>\r\n<li><em>Wait to update when 5.5.3 is released (coming soon)<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Please note, 5.5.3-alpha-49449 also installed bundled themes. Any of these themes the site doesn&#8217;t need will need to be deleted manually.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"profile-link\" href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/johnbillion\">@<span class=\"username\" data-username=\"johnbillion\" data-nicename=\"johnbillion\"><span class=\"trac-author\">johnbillion<\/span><\/span><\/a> at WordPress.org posted, &#8220;W<em>hen 5.5.3 is released, you&#8217;ll be updated to that stable version and you won&#8217;t be alpha or beta testing from that point onward.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>WP now <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/news\/2020\/10\/wordpress-5-5-3-maintenance-release\/\" rel=\"nofollow \">recommends<\/a> &#8211; if you trust them &#8211; to update to version 5.5.3.<\/p>\r\n<p>I did and it appears to have gotten me back to a stable version &#8211; but we will see overnight.
