No more jamming into malls it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/23634\/holiday-shopping-spend-by-channel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online shopping<\/a> now. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/coronavirus\/2020\/11\/holiday-trends-to-watch-adult-latte-smelling-play-doh-dog-toys-and-less-impulse-shopping.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Half of shoppers<\/a> spend some of their money on pet treats and other supplies this holiday season. If your virtual<strong> gift list includes presents for your four-legged buddy<\/strong> \u2013 be careful, there are some puppy toys out there that can <strong>compromise your privacy<\/strong> while Fido is entertained. Mozilla\u2019s \u201c<strong>Privacy Not Included<\/strong>\u201d project analyzed the security of pooch-gifts, and the results are not good for your privacy.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/iot_logo-11.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115821\" title=\"Internet of Things\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/iot_logo-11.jpg?resize=110%2C107&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Internet of Things\" width=\"110\" height=\"107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/iot_logo-11.jpg?w=150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/iot_logo-11.jpg?resize=75%2C73&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>All of these technologies can become <strong>part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220327042857\/https:\/\/internetofthingsagenda.techtarget.com\/definition\/Internet-of-Things-IoT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internet of Things<\/a><\/strong> (IoT). IoT technology interconnects them. For example, IoT connects the camera in your living room with the smartphone on your desk, allowing you to monitor your pet while you\u2019re at work. IoT enables the collection and interconnectivity of data, which is extremely important when considering your safety and privacy.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dogness.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dogness<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dogness.us\/products\/smart-cam-ipet-robot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">iPet Robot<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; This doggy toy costs $299.00 and has all the bells and whistles to keep Fido entertained. It moves and chases your pooch. It has an <strong>HD video camera with night vision<\/strong> to record your pup, two-way <strong>audio<\/strong> to talk to your doggo, a laser to chase, and the ability to toss treats to your buddy with the click of a button in the app. The iPet Robot connects over <strong>Wi-Fi<\/strong> so your home network better be secure &#8211; otherwise, somebody could take over the <strong>rolling spybot<\/strong> and catch your pooch &#8211; or you &#8211; in a compromising position.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dogness.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115808 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Dogness\u00a0iPet Robot\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_dogness-e1606414932989-75x75.png?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dogness\u00a0iPet Robot\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_dogness-e1606414932989.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_dogness-e1606414932989.png?resize=150%2C148&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_dogness-e1606414932989.png?w=181&amp;ssl=1 181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>The Dogness iPet Robot also comes with Mozilla&#8217;s &#8220;*Privacy Not Included\u201d warning. The bot can roll around your house with a night vision camera and microphone while connected to Wi-Fi. Mozilla says that both the Dogness <strong>device and app can snoop on you<\/strong>. The researchers report the device <strong>doesn&#8217;t encrypt your data<\/strong>. Dogness doesn&#8217;t state what information is collected from the robot, or what they do with it. Dogness <strong>uses artificial intelligence<\/strong>, but the reviewers could not determine how the firm uses AI.<\/p>\r\n<p>If that is not scary enough, in March 2020, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.burke-consulting.net\/data-breach-dogness-iot-get-put-in-the-doghouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that Dogness left its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/elasticsearch-service\/the-elk-stack\/what-is-elasticsearch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Amazon ElasticSearch<\/a> server<\/strong> exposed, containing the usernames, emails, clear-text passwords, and session cookies of its users. You can control this <strong>interactive bone<\/strong> through an<strong> app on your phone<\/strong> that connects through Bluetooth. From the app you can make the bone roll around and change colors. When you get bored, a 20-minute interactive mode can entertain your pup without you.<\/p>\r\n<p>The app requires <strong>access to your phone&#8217;s GPS location data<\/strong>\u2014why? That&#8217;s a good question. Additionally, the reviews could not determine if the firm encrypted your data, required strong passwords, or used AI to make decisions about you. And like most IoT devices, it doesn&#8217;t seem to have a way to manage security vulnerabilities. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbark.com\/store\/fitbarkgps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Fitbark GPS<\/a> costs $99.95 + subscription + the costs of Verizon&#8217;s LTE-M cellular network coverage. It is a bone-shaped <strong>tracking device<\/strong> that goes on your dog&#8217;s collar and will track her just about anywhere in the U.S. It also connects to Wi-Fi.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Fitbark <strong>monitors your dog&#8217;s activity<\/strong>, sleep habits, scratching habits, and stress<strong> 24\/7<\/strong>. You can link it to your FitBit, Google Fit, or Apple HealthKit apps and you can stress about your doggo&#8217;s health too.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mozilla reports that Fitbark tracks your dog&#8217;s movements and whereabouts with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS. With all that tracking, an attacker could keep tabs on you or your pup. The app does collect personal data, including name, email, phone number, address, date of birth, profile photo, dog&#8217;s health, and biometric data.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/felik.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115818\" title=\"Felik Pet Companion\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fekik-e1606504494879-115x150.png?resize=77%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Felik Pet Companion\" width=\"77\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fekik-e1606504494879.png?resize=115%2C150&amp;ssl=1 115w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fekik-e1606504494879.png?resize=58%2C75&amp;ssl=1 58w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fekik-e1606504494879.png?w=277&amp;ssl=1 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 77px) 100vw, 77px\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"https:\/\/felik.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Felik<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8dn-tcKEHxI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Pet Companion<\/a><\/strong>\u2014This mouse-shaped bot costs $129.00. It has a camera and artificial intelligence that tracks your pet, learns from their movements, and reacts to how they hunt so it can simulate real prey. Felik connects to the Wi-Fi in your house and has an app where you can schedule play throughout the day.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mozilla says the firm seems to <strong>take privacy and security seriously. They built security and privacy-aware<\/strong><strong> features<\/strong> into the dog toy, like the ability to <strong>toggle Wi-Fi<\/strong> on and off with a physical button, an <strong>indicator light<\/strong> when the camera is streaming, and even an <strong>on-device firewall<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Since it has a camera and a microphone, it could be sued to snoop on you. The app tracks your location. The product uses AI to analyze your personal data to make decisions about you. However, users can request an explanation about any decisions taken as a result of automated decision-making by contacting Felix.<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em><b>The <\/b><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/felik.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Felik<\/a> <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8dn-tcKEHxI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Pet Companion<\/a><b> is the only online dog-toy that I would allow in my home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mozilla<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">*Privacy Not Included<\/a> buyer\u2019s guide investigates the privacy and security of connected toys, gadgets, and smart home products. They flag products they think consumers should think twice about before buying.
