Despite the nay-sayers, coffee is the go-to way to start the day. And now there is even more evidence that <strong>not only is coffee good, but it is also good for you<\/strong>. New research has linked our morning coffee to many health benefits.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Coffee reduces the risk of heart disease<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.touro.com\/blogs\/2017\/february\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-120003\" title=\"Coffee reduces the risk of heart disease\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart_test-2.jpg?resize=110%2C87&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Coffee reduces the risk of heart disease\" width=\"110\" height=\"87\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart_test-2.jpg?w=150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/heart_test-2.jpg?resize=75%2C60&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>A study found that four cups of coffee a day is the best amount of coffee to drink each day. A study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosbiology\/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pbio.2004408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PLOS Biology<\/a> argues that four cups of coffee help maintain a healthy heart. Study co-authors Joachim Altschmied, Ph.D., and Judith Haendeler, Ph.D., both at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhu.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">University of Dusseldorf<\/a> biologists studied coffee intake. They observed that four cups a day can actually <strong>help heart cells function more efficiently<\/strong>. The caffeine in four cups of coffee will \u201cpush\u201d a protein called p27 into the mitochondria of heart cells.<br \/><br \/>Not only does coffee boost heart cell activity. Researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skku.edu\/eng\/index.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sungkyunkwan University<\/a> in South Korea <a href=\"https:\/\/heart.bmj.com\/content\/101\/9\/686.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found<\/a> that regular <strong>coffee drinkers have less risk of heart disease<\/strong>. The study, led by Dr. Yuni Choi, screened over people and found those who consumed <strong>three to five cups of coffee<\/strong> a day. Dr. Choi found they were less likely to see a prevalence of coronary artery calcium or early signs of heart disease.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/article\/180\/8\/763\/2739131?login=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Another study<\/a> looking at coffee consumption and death from chronic diseases found a link between moderate coffee consumption (3 cups per day) and a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular disease deaths compared with non-drinkers.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Coffee reduces the risk of colorectal cancer<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240226043909\/https:\/\/www.lscancerdiag.com\/march-is-the-colon-cancer-awareness-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-120004 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Colon-Cancer-Ribbon.png?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Colon-Cancer-Ribbon.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Colon-Cancer-Ribbon.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Colon-Cancer-Ribbon.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/615798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/homeadmin.usc.edu\/www\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">University of Southern California<\/a>, coffee can r<strong>educe the odds of developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/colon-rectal-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">colorectal cancer<\/a><\/strong> by 26%. And that\u2019s just if you\u2019re the casual coffee drinker. For those who drink more than 2.5 servings of coffee a day, the <strong>risk of cancer decreases<\/strong> up to 50 percent. <a href=\"https:\/\/ascopost.com\/issues\/october-10-2020\/city-of-hope-hires-stephen-gruber-md-phd-mph-to-head-its-center-for-precision-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stephen Gruber<\/a>, MD, Ph.D., MPH, director of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center is the senior author of the study. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/615798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>, &#8220;<em>We found that drinking coffee is associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer, and the more coffee consumed, the lower the risk.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\r\n<p>This was true even when participants drank decaf, meaning there\u2019s more goodness to coffee than just the caffeine. Dr. Bruner explained, \u201c<em>We were somewhat surprised to see that caffeine did not seem to matter &#8230;\u00a0 caffeine alone is not responsible for coffee\u2019s protective properties.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\r\n<h3>Defense against Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/h3>\r\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-120005\" title=\"Defense against Alzheimer's disease\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/brain_workout-1.jpg?resize=91%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Defense against Alzheimer's disease\" width=\"91\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/brain_workout-1.jpg?resize=62%2C75&amp;ssl=1 62w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/brain_workout-1.jpg?resize=124%2C150&amp;ssl=1 124w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/brain_workout-1.jpg?w=288&amp;ssl=1 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 91px) 100vw, 91px\" \/>There are several studies that suggest coffee drinkers may have a reduced risk for developing Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease (AD). In a study published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1179\/174313206X152546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neurological Research<\/a><\/em>, researchers reported that\u00a0<strong>coffee consumption is inversely associated with risk for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.<\/strong> Coffee drinkers experienced a 30% reduction in risk for developing AD compared to those who didn&#8217;t drink coffee.\u00a0In the <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT03938727\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CAIDE<\/a> (Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging, and Dementia) study, drinking <strong>3-5 cups of coffee a day<\/strong> was <a href=\"https:\/\/content.iospress.com\/articles\/journal-of-alzheimers-disease\/jad01404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">associated<\/a> with a significantly <strong>decreased risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/strong> later in life compared with low coffee drinkers<\/p>\r\n<h3>A cuppa Joe protects the liver<\/h3>\r\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-120007\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" title=\"A cuppa Joe protects the liver\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Liver-e1629493274711-150x92.jpg?resize=110%2C67&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A cuppa Joe protects the liver\" width=\"110\" height=\"67\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Liver-e1629493274711.jpg?resize=150%2C92&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Liver-e1629493274711.jpg?resize=75%2C46&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Liver-e1629493274711.jpg?w=432&amp;ssl=1 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The liver is essential for digesting food and ridding your body of toxic substances. There are many diseases that affect the liver. Diseases like hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or chronic alcoholism, can lead to cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steadyhealth.com\/articles\/tea-and-coffee-may-protect-liver-health\/how-coffee-and-tea-help-protect-the-liver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one study<\/a>, the researchers found the mechanism of action of caffeine found in coffee on the lipids (fat) in the liver. Their findings suggest that <strong>drinking equivalent amounts of caffeine in four cups of coffee a day may help prevent and protect against fatty liver<\/strong> in humans. These results support other studies that coffee consumption can help reduce the progression of liver damage associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.<\/p>\r\n<p>There are other studies conducted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16772246\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">United States<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11557177\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Italy<\/a> found that people who drank four or more cups a day had up to an <strong>80 percent lower risk of cirrhosis,<\/strong> especially the type brought on from alcohol consumption.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Best Source of Antioxidants<\/h3>\r\n<p>Antioxidants are \u201ccleaners\u201d and oxidizes free radicals in the body. They form harmless substances that can then be flushed out of the bloodstream and body, naturally. Coffee has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coffeescience.org\/6-antioxidants-in-coffee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more antioxidants<\/a> than green and black teas and red wine. For people who eat a standard Western diet, coffee may be one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14988447\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">healthiest aspects<\/a> of their diet.
