Cisco says that the second leading source of internet traffic will be the Internet of Things devices.<\/p>\n<p>The networking giant says the source will be from <a title=\"Machine-to-Machine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine-to-Machine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">machine-to-machine<\/a> communications, or &#8220;M2M.&#8221; Brian Bergstein at <a title=\"Massachusetts Institute of Technology\" href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">MIT<\/a>&#8216;s <em><a title=\"Technology Review\" href=\"http:\/\/technologyreview.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Technology Review<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"The Machines Are Talking a Lot\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120419071039\/http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com:80\/blog\/editors\/27578\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> to think of <a title=\"Sensor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sensor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">sensors<\/a> in cars and in appliances, surveillance cameras, smart electric meters, and devices still to come, monitoring the world and reporting to each other and to centralized computers what they&#8217;re detecting. The chart below, reprinted from the Cisco report, shows just how extreme the jump in machine-to-machine communications could be. In a press release, the company explains:<\/p>\n<p>The 32-bit Cortex-M0+ processor &#8230; consumes just 9\u00b5A\/MHz &#8230; around one-third of the energy of any 8 or 16-bit processor available today, while delivering much higher performance &#8230;[to] enable the creation of smart, low-power microcontrollers to provide &#8230; The <a title=\"Qualcomm Atheros ar4100p provide wifi connectivity to the internet of things\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnx-software.com\/2012\/03\/21\/qualcomm-atheros-ar4100p-provide-wifi-connectivity-to-the-internet-of-things\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AR4100P<\/a>, is focused on the \u201cInternet of Things.\u201d He predicts that soon, there might be Wi-Fi in everything around us, including <a title=\"Samsung Electronics Co.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung&#8217;s <\/a>(<a title=\"KS : 005930\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/005930:KS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">005930<\/a>) Wi-Fi-enabled\u00a0<a title=\"Washing machine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washing_machine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">washing machines<\/a>, which Malik wrote about <a title=\"Om Malik\" href=\"http:\/\/om.co\/2012\/01\/11\/and-here-is-wi-fi-enabled-washer-dryer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">earlier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the blog, the new \u201chighly integrated 802.11n single-stream Wi-Fi system-in-package with integrated dual IPv4 <a title=\"IPv6\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180909163932\/https:\/\/searchenterprisewan.techtarget.com\/definition\/IPv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IPv6<\/a> <a title=\"Protocol stack\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protocol_stack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">networking stack<\/a>\u201d is focused on <a title=\"Domotics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domotics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">smart home<\/a> and building controls and appliances. Mint Foundry, a graduate design lab at <a title=\"Mint Digital\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintdigital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Mint Digital<\/a> dedicated to exploring the potential of web-connected objects developed Olly.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible to change Olly&#8217;s smells in an instant. It has a removable section in the back which can be filled with any smell you like. It could be essential oils, a slice of fruit, your partner\u2019s perfume, or even a drop of gin.<\/p>\n<p>Olly is stackable, so if you have more than one, you can assign each one to a different service with a different smell. Connect one to <a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a> and another to your calendar.
