The often sold antivirus vendor is selling its enterprise security business. McAfee and private equity firm<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/stg.com\/\">Symphony Technology Group<\/a><\/strong> (STG) announced on 03\/08\/2021 that the PE is buying McAfee&#8217;s <strong>enterprise security business for $4.0 billion<\/strong> in an all-cash deal. The deal is expected to close before 2022. McAfee is keeping its consumer security software business.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Selling its enterprise security business<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-2.jpg?resize=120%2C150&amp;ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116425\" title=\"$4.0 billion in an all-cash deal\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?resize=80%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"$4.0 billion in an all-cash deal\" width=\"80\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?resize=120%2C150&amp;ssl=1 120w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?resize=60%2C75&amp;ssl=1 60w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 80px) 100vw, 80px\" \/><\/a>The McAfee website touts that the enterprise business serves 86% of the Fortune 100 firms, and generated $1.3 billion in net revenue in the fiscal year 2020. Despite these numbers, it is clear why McAfee is selling its enterprise security business. For FY2020 the company reported $2.9 billion in total revenue, up 10% YoY. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Techcrunch<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/03\/08\/mcafee-sells-enterprise-biz-to-symphony-technology-group-for-4b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> the overall revenue broke down to $1.6 billion from the consumer side. The <strong>enterprise side brought in $1.3 billion in net revenue, an increase of just 1%<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Increased competition<\/h3>\r\n<p>One of the reasons McAfee is selling its enterprise security business is <strong>increased competition<\/strong>. McAfee\u2019s enterprise business has struggled in recent years against fast-growing endpoint detection and response (EDR) software companies \u2014 such as <strong>CrowdStrike and SentinelOne<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdstrike.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CrowdStrike\u2019s<\/a> revenue was up 86% YoY in 21Q3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentinelone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SentinelOne<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/news\/security\/sentinelone-eyes-10b-ipo-for-later-this-year-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">preparing an IPO<\/a> that could achieve a $10 billion valuation. Also, major technology companies such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/products\/security\/user-endpoint-protection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Cisco Systems<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/security\/endpoint-defender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft<\/a>, and VMware&#8217;s\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210812000250\/https:\/\/www.carbonblack.com\/products\/vmware-carbon-black-cloud-endpoint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carbon Black<\/a> have pushed deeper into McAfee&#8217;s market space.<\/p>\r\n<h3>We have seen this before<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160730172256\/http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/blog\/yogi-berras-jersey-home-for-sale-151123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116426\" title=\"We have seen this before\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Yogi-Berra-3.png?resize=100%2C94&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"We have seen this before\" width=\"100\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Yogi-Berra-3.png?resize=150%2C142&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Yogi-Berra-3.png?resize=75%2C71&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Yogi-Berra-3.png?w=550&amp;ssl=1 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>After the sale of the <strong>enterprise security business, it will re-branded<\/strong>. Once the deal closes, the McAfee consumer business will be known as McAfee. The STG-McAfee deal is similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-pra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Symantec\u2019s breakup<\/a>. As I wrote about in 2019, Broadcom acquired Symantec\u2019s enterprise security business for $10.7 billion. Symantec\u2019s consumer business, now known as NortonLifeLock, remains publicly traded.<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 1.5em;\">Legacy Synergy\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-ufw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116427\" title=\"Synergy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery-1.jpg?resize=85%2C64&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Synergy\" width=\"85\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery-1.jpg?resize=150%2C114&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery-1.jpg?resize=75%2C57&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery-1.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 85px) 100vw, 85px\" \/><\/a>STG&#8217;s purchase of McAfee&#8217;s enterprise security business <strong>should pair well<\/strong> with another STG enterprise-focused security holding. <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-tnm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The PE firm <strong>purchased<\/strong><\/a><strong> RSA from Dell<\/strong> last February for $2 billion.\u00a0STG did not point directly to the RSA acquisition, the two investments create a large <strong>combined legacy security business<\/strong> for the firm.
