{"id":11646,"date":"2012-01-24T18:45:07","date_gmt":"2012-01-24T23:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbachnet.wwwmi3-ss40.a2hosted.com\/?p=11646"},"modified":"2022-12-22T08:15:51","modified_gmt":"2022-12-22T13:15:51","slug":"tablet-info-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/tablet-info-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Tablet Info"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Tablet PC has long been a pet project for <a title=\"\/www.microsoft.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> founder <a title=\"www.biography.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesnotes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Gates<\/a>, who showed the first Tablet PC prototype in 2000 at <a title=\"Comdex\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/COMDEX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comdex<\/a>. <a title=\"Bill Gates\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/bill-gates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Mr. Gates<\/a> described the device, which featured input via stylus only, as an evolutionary step in PC functionality and usability. The report cites unnamed sources and says that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) will also update its version of Office for the Mac next year.<\/p>\n<p>On a business level, it might make sense the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) iPad is making inroads into the enterprise, and having some sort of Office client available for it would let Microsoft earn at least some money from these Apple invaders. It would also help make sure that <a title=\"www.microsoft.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office365\/online-software.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office 365<\/a> the company&#8217;s cloud-based business services would work on the iPad <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/microsoft-office-coming-to-ipad-next-year-says-report-2011-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>BusinessInsider<\/em><\/a>,<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"www.crunchbase.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> might even do this at the risk of driving some enterprise customers to stick with iPads instead of adopting <a title=\"msdn.microsoft.com\" href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/apps\/br229516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows 8<\/a> tablets. After all, Office and related back-end products have been driving Microsoft&#8217;s growth for the last year, while Windows sales have been pretty stagnant (<em>I wrote about Office&#8217;s profitability <a title=\"rbach.net\" href=\"http:\/\/rbachnet.wwwmi3-ss40.a2hosted.com\/index.php\/money-makes-the-tech-world-gou-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>BusinessInsider<\/em> points out that Microsoft has NEVER released <a title=\"Office for the Mac\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office for the Mac<\/a> in the same year (or before) Office for Windows. Microsoft is building Office 15 for Windows. It&#8217;s going to be a ton of work to revamp it to work with the Windows 8 tablet interface, or risk having it relegated to traditional PCs only (and having one less reason for customers to choose Windows 8 tablets). The Mac version of Office almost always comes a year after the Windows version. The <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>BusinessInsider<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/dell-streak-discontinued-2011-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-DELL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DELL<\/a>) is pulling the plug on its unremarkable tablet, as <a title=\"www.dell.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dell.com\/us\/p\/d\/campaigns\/streak-7.aspx?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;preview=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">indicated on its site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is only shortly after <a title=\"www.pcmag.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/article2\/0,2817,2390945,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discontinuing<\/a> the <a title=\"www.dell.com\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120310170146\/http:\/\/www.dell.com:80\/us\/p\/d\/campaigns\/streak5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell Streak 5<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>BI<\/em> recalled <a title=\"Walt Mossberg\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110529033339\/http:\/\/walt.allthingsd.com:80\/?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Walt Mossberg<\/a>&#8216;s February 2011 <em><a title=\"allthingsd.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220809130149\/https:\/\/allthingsd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AllThingsD<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"allthingsd.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211018171351\/https:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20110209\/the-streak-7-bargain-tablet-from-dell-is-no-real-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review<\/a> of the tablet, he sums it all up with one sentence: &#8220;<em>I found the compromises Dell made to get to that low price make it impossible for me to recommend the Streak 7.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I wrote about hardware companies abandoning the tablet market in 2012 here. Chinese company <a title=\"In Icons\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230131203135\/http:\/\/inicons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In Icons<\/a> created an &#8220;eerily realistic&#8221; 12-inch action figure of Steve Jobs. <em>TechEye<\/em> says the model comes with the clothes and accessories such as the black faux turtleneck, blue jeans and sneakers. It was being sold in a box that looks like <a title=\"Walter Isaacson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Isaacson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Walter Isaacson<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;<a title=\"www.amazon.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Steve-Jobs-Walter-Isaacson\/dp\/1451648537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Jobs<\/a>&#8221; biography cover and comes with a chair, a &#8220;<a title=\"Stevenote\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stevenote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">One More Thing<\/a>&#8230;&#8221; backdrop, as well as two red apples, including one with a bite in it.<\/p>\n<p>Apple sees this as an affront and has told In Icons that using Apple&#8217;s logo or products, or Jobs&#8217; name or appearance, is a &#8220;criminal offense.&#8221; The article points out that the Pope and <a title=\"Elvis Presley\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Elvis-Presley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Elvis<\/a> have similar deals on their merchandise.<\/p>\n<p>But it is clear that its threat is going nowhere In Icons is not giving up.<\/p>\n<p>Tandy Cheung, the entrepreneur behind In Icons told <em>TechEye<\/em> said that he was an Apple fanboy, and a lot of people like him want to have Jobs&#8217; action figure.
