Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the nation\u2019s greatest heroes. The interred include more than 300,000 veterans of every American conflict, from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan. Some other facts about the national cemetery include:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/library\/digitalhistory\/digital-encyclopedia\/article\/george-washington-parke-custis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Washington Parke Custis<\/a>, the adopted son of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/george-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Washington<\/a> acquired the land that is now Arlington National Cemetery in 1802.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In 1864 the 200-acre Arlington plantation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/making-sense-of-robert-e-lee-85017563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee<\/a> was made a cemetery. The intent was to render the house uninhabitable should the Lee family ever attempt to return.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240614170809\/https:\/\/arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/1988-7-Burials.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Private William Christman<\/a>, 21, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/civilwar\/search-battle-units-detail.htm?battleUnitCode=UPA0067RI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">67th Pennsylvania Infantry<\/a> was the first burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Pvt.
