Today, there are around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/american-pyrotechnics-association-urges-congress-to-act-now-to-preserve-the-july-4th-american-fireworks-tradition-301066921.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">16,000<\/a> Independence Day firework celebrations every year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/john-adams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Adams<\/a>, 2nd President of the United States, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/digitaladams\/archive\/doc?id=L17760703jasecond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> to his wife, Abigail, that Independence Day should be celebrated with<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2026 Bells, Bonfires, and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Taking a cue from John Adams&#8217; call for &#8220;Bonfires and Illuminations,&#8221; Congress in Philadelphia, adjourned to light up the night with fireworks.\u00a0The Philadelphia Evening Post <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/human-interest\/2012\/07\/history-of-fireworks-in-america-why-do-we-celebrate-fourth-of-july-with-fireworks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> that on July 4th, 1777,<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8230; at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Boston saw its own Fourth of July fireworks display in 1777.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston-tea-party.org\/participants\/Thomas-Crafts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colonel Thomas Crafts<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/sons-of-liberty-members-causes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sons of Liberty<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newenglandhistoricalsociety.com\/12-fascinating-facts-fourth-july-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8230;<\/em><em>illuminated his park on the commons, threw several shells, and exhibited a number of fireworks.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>In 1783, Boston was the first city to designate July 4 as an official holiday. The tradition of Fourth of July fireworks to celebrate Independence day spread as the country grew.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Fourth of July fireworks<\/h3>\r\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pyro.memberclicks.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Pyrotechnics Association<\/a> (APA) <a href=\"https:\/\/pyro.memberclicks.net\/assets\/docs\/FactsandFigures\/Fireworks%20Revenue%20by%20Industry%20Segment%201999-19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> that today, Americans spend almost <strong>$1.4 billion on fireworks<\/strong> each year for displays and backyard use. Larger displays can cost millions of dollars.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/pops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular<\/a> costs more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/more-fireworks-bang-for-the-buck-this-july-4th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$2.5 million<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macys.com\/social\/fireworks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macy\u2019s fireworks show<\/a> in New York City uses more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.6sqft.com\/macys-fireworks-by-the-numbers-the-tricks-and-stats-behind-the-nations-largest-4th-of-july-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">75,000 fireworks shells<\/a> and costs about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/features\/macys-fourth-july-fireworks-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$6 million<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Firework displays cause Ohh&#8217;s, Ahh&#8217;s, and injuries. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/s3fs-public\/2019-Fireworks-Annual-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accounted<\/a> for <strong>7,300 firework-related emergency room visits<\/strong> in 2019. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CPSC<\/a> also reports that:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Fireworks related ER visits include Burns, 57%, and Eye injuries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/tips-prevention\/injuries-fireworks-eye-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19%<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116975 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Fireworks related ER visits\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ambulance-1.gif?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fireworks related ER visits\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" \/>Men are far more likely (66%) than women (34%) to suffer a fireworks-related injury.<\/li>\r\n<li>Children younger than 15 years old accounted for 36% of fireworks-related injuries.<\/li>\r\n<li>Almost half of the fireworks-related injuries were to individuals younger than 20 years of age.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Fourth of July Barbecues<\/h3>\r\n<p>Barbecue is the most famous 4th of July <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3957444\/barbecue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">food tradition<\/a> is the all-American barbecue, which brings many American families and friends together around a grill. The 4th of July is the country\u2019s <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/fr\/news-release\/2020\/04\/29\/2024078\/0\/en\/2020-State-of-the-Barbecue-Industry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:most popular grilling day\" data-rapid_p=\"101\" data-v9y=\"1\">most popular grilling day<\/a>. This year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Retail Federation<\/a> (NRF) <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/insightsholiday-and-seasonal-trends\/independence-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">predicts<\/a> Americans will spend around $6.5 billion on food to celebrate the Fourth of July. This included food and other cookout expenses, averaging out to about <strong>$77.00 per person<\/strong> participating in a barbecue, outdoor cookout, or picnic. Spending peaked in 2017, at $7.15.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210513125707\/http:\/\/www.bighappyfunhouse.com\/archives\/07\/06\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116896\" title=\"all-American barbecue,\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bbqin.jpg?resize=110%2C109&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"all-American barbecue,\" width=\"110\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bbqin.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bbqin.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bbqin.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a> European colonists barbecued large animals over a pit. A style they adapted from native Americans. The tradition of grilling out didn\u2019t get going in earnest until the early 1800s. Barbeque&#8217;s popularity spread as political leaders began staging rallies to mark Independence Day and drew crowds by staging massive feasts featuring whole pigs and oxen.<\/p>\r\n<p>By the 19th century, America was a little more established and politics started going full swing. Political leaders would host rallies, gathering people to hear their opinions by hosting massive barbecues. This move was especially popular with the Democrats in the southern states where these rallies would be held on Independence Day, which was not yet a National Holiday. Local farmers donated meat and simple food was served; sliced cucumbers, watermelon, early harvest vegetables, and fresh bread.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Salt Lake Herald, September 20, 1888, described one such <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85058130\/1888-09-20\/ed-1\/seq-1\/#date1=1777&amp;index=18&amp;date2=1963&amp;words=barbeque+Barbeque&amp;searchType=basic&amp;sequence=0&amp;sort=date&amp;state=&amp;rows=20&amp;proxtext=Barbeque&amp;y=12&amp;x=17&amp;dateFilterType=yearRange&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>CINCINNATI September 19<br \/>There were 600 people at the Erlanger barbeque eight miles south<br \/> of here to see Speaker Carlisle and Senator Blackburn and hear<br \/> them speak  ... The barbeque consisted of four carcasses of <br \/>oxen  twenty four carcasses of sheep and no end of chickens also<br \/> of 100 gallons of soup that had been cooking three days and<br \/> 2000 baskets of bread ... <\/em><\/pre>\r\n<p>The Maysville KY Evening Bulletin, September 03, 1892, describes <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn87060190\/1892-09-03\/ed-1\/seq-4\/#date1=1777&amp;index=1&amp;date2=1963&amp;words=barbeque&amp;searchType=basic&amp;sequence=0&amp;sort=date&amp;state=&amp;rows=20&amp;proxtext=Barbeque&amp;y=12&amp;x=17&amp;dateFilterType=yearRange&amp;page=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another event<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Herndon, Ky. Sept. 3.<br \/> General Adlai Stevenson was welcomed to the scene of his <br \/>birthplace yesterday by 6,000 people who had ... \u00a0and in order<br \/> that the Democratic gathering should not suffer from hunger,<br \/> an enormous barbeque was prepared. Even Homer\u2019s Odyssey makes mention of sausage. How sausages become hot dogs in the U.S. is open for <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210513091356\/http:\/\/www.coveringsports.com\/hotdog.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debate<\/a> immigrants brought sausages to America. However what is know is that in 1916, Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker opened <a href=\"https:\/\/nathansfamous.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nathan&#8217;s Famous<\/a> hot stand in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Nathan's+Famous\/@40.6138218,-74.1134715,34261m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c244353f830641:0x7236f2dccccf97c0!8m2!3d40.5752667!4d-73.9814806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Coney Island NY<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Coney Island location is home to the annual Fourth of July hot dog eating contest. The event is now so big that it\u2019s broadcast on ESPN.\u00a0The reigning champ, Joey Chestnut set the world record for most hot dogs eaten in 2020 when he scarfed down <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/r2cuNiPSJ9o?t=85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">75 hot dogs<\/a> (and buns!) in 10 minutes.
