Mr. Henson along with his wife and partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/blog\/2013\/04\/in-memoriam-jane-nebel-henson-1934-2013.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jane Newbel<\/a> created coffee ads for Wilkins coffee starting in 1957. The ads starred two <strong>proto-muppets known as Wilkins and Wontkins<\/strong>. The pair were featured in 179 10-second television commercial spots for Wilkins Coffee that ran on Washington, D.C., local television from 1957 to 1961.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Wontkins does not like coffee<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Store\/Runningoncoffee\/PreK-12-Subject-Area\/Creative-Writing?ref=filter\/subject&amp;aref=etlgyj04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-120536\" title=\"Wontkins does not like coffee\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon_coffee-e1631983784427.jpg?resize=84%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Wontkins does not like coffee\" width=\"84\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>The commercials featured Wilkins and Wontkins in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Looney-Tunes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Looney Tunes<\/a> like situations. Wilkins, who loved coffee, regularly tortured his protagonist Wontkins, who did not like coffee. Much to the dismay of Wilkins, Wontkins refused to even try a cup. The result is that Wilkins torments Wontkins in any number of ways.<\/p>\r\n<p>Wotkins finds himself crushed by the Washington Monument, electrocuted, fired out of a cannon, shot, stabbed, and stomped on. His head is crushed in a car hood, he gets thrown out of a plane and is tarred and feathered, much to the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/blog\/jim-henson-creations-you-may-not-know-wilkins-and-wontkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">delight of the audience<\/a>. In one ad Wilkins exclaimed,\u00a0\u201c<em>People who don&#8217;t drink Wilkins Coffee just blow up sometimes.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/LmhIizQQol0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n<p>The ads were very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/jim-henson-first-tv-commercial-132541220.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">popular<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/in-1950s-washington-jim-hensons-muppets-sold-coffee--violently\/2019\/12\/28\/032c9e34-210f-11ea-bed5-880264cc91a9_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2019\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0story<\/a>, claims that the spots resulted in a 300% increase in sales for Watkins Coffee and the company sold 25,000 pairs of vinyl Wilkins and Wontkins puppets in 1958. But the <strong>puppetry mayhem<\/strong> could not save Wilkins Coffee. The brand started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/food\/1989\/02\/22\/coffee-orkeeping-things-perking-at-wilkins-coffee\/9b5b3213-e1f8-47dd-85a1-6d10ae7c154c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">selling coffee in 1899<\/a> in the Washington DC area. But by 1989 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maxwell_House\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maxwell House<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxim.com\/entertainment\/jim-hensons-1960s-coffee-ads-go-viral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bought out Wilkins coffee<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>The duo appear in more adverts<\/h3>\r\n<p>The campaign proved extremely successful. Mr. Henson <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210908131448\/https:\/\/designtaxi.com\/news\/415505\/1950s-Muppets-Ads-Threatened-Your-Life-Unless-You-Drank-This-Coffee-Brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recalled<\/a> that at one time, they had \u201c<em><strong>up to about a dozen or so clients going at the same time.<\/strong><\/em>\u201d After the Wilkins Coffee advertisement campaign, Henson\u2019s advertising agency featured Wilkins and Wontkins in advertisements <a href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/jim-henson-muppets-commercial-wilkins-coffee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">for other brands<\/a>, such as Nash\u2019s Coffee, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2015\/12\/16\/ask-geoffrey-how-small-downtown-building-escaped-demolition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kraml Dairy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakeryonline.com\/doc\/earthgrains-completes-metz-acquisition-from-s-0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Taystee Bread<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/reddiamond.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Red Diamon<\/a>d, and Detroit&#8217;s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarkehistoricallibrary.org\/2019\/07\/the-history-of-faygo-pop.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Faygo<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/V9OIBHqZjNg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n<h3>A star is born<\/h3>\r\n<p>The Henson agency also created ads for <a href=\"https:\/\/muppet.fandom.com\/wiki\/Claussen%27s_Bakery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Claussen&#8217;s Bread<\/a>. The Claussen&#8217;s ads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2021\/02\/20\/jim-henson-wilkins-coffee-ads-resurface-muppets-commercial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">introduced<\/a> Mr. Henson&#8217;s most famous creation, <a href=\"https:\/\/muppet.fandom.com\/wiki\/Kermit_the_Frog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Kermit the Frog<\/strong><\/a> to the world. The mayhem is less intense than the Wilkins Wontins adverts, but Kermit gets the short end of the abuse in these commercials.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/QgQjWWfkxuI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><em>These ads may seem harsh to modern viewers. The commercials do date for the 1950&#8217;a, the same era as <a href=\"https:\/\/dai.ly\/x3i7tyh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bugs Bunny<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/j8pJR8k1E5g?feature=shared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wiley E. Coyote<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dai.ly\/x4g58gw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tom and Jerry<\/a>.
