Many people look forward to the <strong>big game ads<\/strong> that are created specifically for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/story\/super-bowl-sunday-an-unofficial-holiday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">semi-offical national holiday<\/a>. Companies spend a LOT of money to advertise during the big game. <a title=\"Statista\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Statista<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/826\/super-bowl-tv-advertising-in-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found<\/a> that since 2010, the average rate for a <strong>30-second spot<\/strong> during the Super Bowl broadcast has risen from $2.77 million to <strong>$6.50 million<\/strong>, making it by far the most expensive time slot U.S. television has to offer.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116425\" title=\"30-second spot during the Super Bowl broadcast costs $6.50 million,\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?resize=80%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"30-second spot during the Super Bowl broadcast costs $6.50 million,\" width=\"80\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?resize=120%2C150&amp;ssl=1 120w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?resize=60%2C75&amp;ssl=1 60w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-money-3.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 80px) 100vw, 80px\" \/>The payback is huge. According to <em>Statista<\/em>, <strong>viewers tend to pay special attention to Super Bowl ads<\/strong>, as agencies typically try to honor the big game with especially witty and funny ads. In recent years, the dawn of <strong>YouTube<\/strong> has added another bonus for Super Bowl advertisers seeing that the most popular ads often <strong>reach millions of additional viewers<\/strong> on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Here are my <strong>most memorable Super Bowl tech ads<\/strong> in chronological order.<\/p>\n<h3>Xerox &#8220;Monks&#8221; (1976)<\/h3>\n<p>In this <strong>Xerox<\/strong> spot for <a title=\"Super Bowl X\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/197601180dal.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl X<\/a>, Brother Dominic has a problem. The head of his order wants 500 copies of a handwritten manuscript. So he does what any smart monk would do \u2014 he turns to <a title=\"Xerox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xerox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xerox<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE | XRX\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-XRX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">XRX<\/a>). The miraculous Xerox 9200 duplicating system saves the day. The Xerox <strong>9200 duplicating system<\/strong> feeds and cycles the originals, duplicates, reduces, collates and more, all at &#8220;an incredible 2 pages per second.&#8221; <span class=\"ILfuVd NA6bn c3biWd UiGGAb\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">Hallelujah<\/span><\/span>!<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_IgH2M02xek\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Apple &#8220;1984&#8221; (1984)<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\">The iconic 1984 <strong><a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) Macintosh commercial aired on television only once &#8211; during the 3rd quarter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/198401220rai.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl XIX<\/a>. Based on George Orwell&#8217;s novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four the spot told the world the new <strong>Apple Macintosh computer<\/strong> would free individuals from the overbearing control of &#8220;Big Brother&#8221; &#8211; presumably, IBM&#8217;s Personal computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/2zfqw8nhUwA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Iomega &#8220;Bermuda Triangle&#8221; (1998)<\/h3>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/199801250den.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl XXXIII<\/a> spot from<strong> <a title=\"Iomega\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-emc-iomega\/emc-to-buy-zip-drive-maker-iomega-idUSWNAS716720080408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Iomega<\/a><\/strong> shows the interior of an airplane flying through the Bermuda Triangle, with multiple objects (and people) rapidly disappearing around the spokesperson. Ironically, <strong>Iomega Zip drives<\/strong> were often subject to a phenomenon known as the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Click_of_death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>click of death<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; \u2014 a sound marking the drive&#8217;s failure and complete data loss.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/civsZLQzrjs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Monster &#8220;When I Grow Up&#8221; (1999)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Monster.com<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong> excellent ad for 1999&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/199901310atl.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl XXXIV<\/a> captured the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/webfeatures_econindicators_jobspict070299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">malaise of Y2k<\/a>. The ad featured children explaining what they would be when they grew up, including &#8220;I want to climb my way up to middle management.&#8221; The end of the ad displays the message &#8220;What did you want to be?&#8221; The message was simple and effective debut &#8211; Monster.com helps you get a new job. Sounds like a precursor of 2022&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/great-resignation-60-minutes-2022-01-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Great Resignation<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/olSIMc4j5Sg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>E*Trade &#8220;Monkey&#8221; (2000)<\/h3>\n<p>This 2000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/200001300oti.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl XXXIV<\/a> ad from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/02\/20\/morgan-stanley-reportedly-to-buy-e-trade-for-13-billion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>E*Trade<\/strong><\/a> was originally written to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/creativity\/the-genius-of-etrade-monkey-the-most-subversive-super-bowl-ad-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lampoon the <strong>expense<\/strong><\/a><strong> of advertising on the big game<\/strong>. It turns out to <strong>foreshadow the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dot-com_bubble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dot-bomb<\/a><\/strong>. On the ad, chimp dances as two men clapped for 30 seconds. The add closes with, &#8220;Well, we just wasted 2 million dollars. What are you doing with your money?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Spooky from a stock market player.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/qbBLDBohgrY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Hulu &#8220;Alec in Huluwood&#8221; (2009)<\/h3>\n<p>In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/200902010crd.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl XLIII<\/a> ad Alec Baldwin\u00a0introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Hulu<\/strong><\/a> to the general public. The ad claims that the <strong>streaming service<\/strong> was actually an evil alien plot to destroy the world.<\/p>\n<p>Where we would be be in 2022 without <a href=\"https:\/\/mitechnews.com\/featured\/study-pandemic-increases-streaming-video-usage-no-end-in-sight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video streaming to binge watch<\/a> our way thru <strong>COVID lock downs<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/6NZ2jBp176E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Best Buy &#8220;Ozzy Osbourne vs Justin Bieber&#8221; (2011)<\/h3>\n<p>Back before the Biebs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/10\/29\/18037402\/justin-bieber-burrito-yes-theory-prank-youtube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was or was not pulling burrito pranks<\/a>, he tried to take on the &#8220;Prince of Darkness.&#8221; In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/201102060pit.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl XLV<\/a> ad for <a title=\"Best Buy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bestbuy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Best Buy<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-BBY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BBY)<\/a> from 2011, the Biebs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ozzyosbourne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Ozzy Osbourne<\/strong><\/a> try to figure how many Gs there are in <strong>5G<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And hey 11 years later <a href=\"https:\/\/circleid.com\/posts\/20210415-telling-the-truth-about-5g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">5G is still in limited use<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/6MavBjxRSak\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>TurboTax &#8220;Never a Sellout&#8221; (2016)<\/h3>\n<p>When you&#8217;re as big a star as Sir Anthony Hopkins, you don&#8217;t ever need to sell anything. Especially if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/taxes\/2022\/01\/06\/turbotax-free-tax-return-irs\/9114118002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was free<\/a>. This subtle <strong>TurboTax<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/201602070den.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl L<\/a> ad was a hit in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/5OVHwrtTi8w\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Dashlane &#8220;Password Paradise&#8221; (2020)<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>password manager<\/strong> went big time in 2020 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/202002020kan.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Super Bowl LIV<\/a> ad. As followers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bach Seat<\/a> know passwords suck and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dashlane.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dashline<\/a><\/strong> made it clear how important it is to know your passwords.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/B5lslSPfhkg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>That was my most memorable Super Bowl tech ads in chronological order.
