They ran an article recently about a CEO using holograms. The article explains how <strong>CEO&#8217;s are using<\/strong><strong>\u00a0life-size holograms to cut-down on travel<\/strong>. Holography was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/photo-essays\/2012-04-19\/holographic-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">discovered by physicist Dennis Gabor<\/a> in 1951. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for for his discovery in 1971. In simple terms, a hologram is basically a <strong>recording of a 3D image<\/strong> that can be reproduced with the same amount of depth and detail as the original. Viewers can see the image from different angles, the same way they\u2019d be able to see a real object.<\/p>\r\n<h3>What is a hologram<\/h3>\r\n<p>Holograms don\u2019t require special equipment, like glasses or headsets to view. The image can be viewed from any angle, so as the user walks around the display the object will appear to move and shift realistically. Holographic images can be static, such as a picture of a product, or they may be animated sequences which can be watched by multiple people from any viewpoint.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explainthatstuff.com\/holograms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-126495\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/making-a-hologram.png?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/making-a-hologram.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/making-a-hologram.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/making-a-hologram.png?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/research\/project-starline-expands-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/2\/4\/22918025\/microsoft-hololens-3-canceled-reports-comment-rumors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft Corp.,<\/a> as well as startups like <a href=\"https:\/\/hypervsn.com\/smartv-solo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HyerVSN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mdhhologram.com\/telepresence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MDH Hologram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/musion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Musion<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/vivid-q.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VIVIDIQ<\/a> are working on <strong>holographic communications services<\/strong>. Businesses diverse as <a href=\"https:\/\/media.ford.com\/content\/fordmedia\/fna\/us\/en\/news\/2017\/09\/21\/ford-tests-microsoft-hololens-globally.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ford<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220522232921\/https:\/\/strategyonline.ca\/2022\/02\/15\/trend-to-watch-the-rise-and-return-of-holograms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Johnnie Walker<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/10\/25\/nba-new-revenue-exciting-future-5g-most-challenging-season.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the NBA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/16\/google-hologram-video-call-booths-coming-to-wework-t-mobile-offices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Salesforce<\/a>, French bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finextra.com\/newsarticle\/33836\/bnp-paribas-rolls-out-hologram-projection-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BNP Paribas<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearekaleida.com\/wwf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Wildlife Foundation<\/a> are using holograms. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emergenresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Emergen Research<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emergenresearch.com\/blog\/top-10-companies-offering-3d-holographic-display-and-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">predicts<\/a> that the global 3D Holographic Display and Services <strong>market size will reach $3.45 billion<\/strong> in 2028. Larry O\u2019Reilly, CEO of Toronto-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arht.tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ARHT Media Inc.<\/a>, told Bloomberg:<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: left;\"><em>People can\u2019t look away &#8230; We create the illusion of 3D in a life-size person or object with no noticeable latency, which creates a sense of presence.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>Result of the COVID-19 pandemic<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114951 size-medium\" title=\"COVID-19 lockdowns\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?resize=150%2C96&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"COVID-19 lockdowns\" width=\"150\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?resize=150%2C96&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?resize=75%2C48&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/WFH_COVID_virus.jpg?w=546&amp;ssl=1 546w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The article says the <strong>COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong> caused firms to rethink the rules of work. Apparently, corporations see holograms as a way to communicate with employees and customers while cutting down on travel. Before COVID, holograms were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/michael-jackson-hologram-billboard-music-awards-6092040\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">used<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xliveglobal.com\/fan-experience\/abba-announces-hologram-concert-spring-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">for<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2012-04-16\/how-tupac-became-a-hologram-is-elvis-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">concerts<\/a> with mixed results. Portl founder, David Nussbaum told Bloomberg,<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: left;\"><em>Holograms were never in demand for anything but entertainment until recently &#8230; Instead of digitally resurrecting dead artists, I saw holograms as a new way of communication &#8230;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>Hologram tech<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/protohologram.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-126496 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Portl logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_portl.jpg?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Portl logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_portl.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_portl.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_portl.jpg?w=200&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>The system featured in the article was provided by LA-based Proto (formerly <a href=\"https:\/\/protohologram.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Portl Inc<\/a>.). The rig, called <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7MG7rwKbhCs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Epic<\/a>, is a <strong>human-sized \u201cportal\u201d<\/strong> that produces a lifelike person in hologram. Epic lets people \u201cbeam\u201d themselves to a location thousands of miles away and interact with people there. The author says the entire set-up <strong>cost $160,000<\/strong>. Portl also sells individual boxes for $65,000.<\/p>\r\n<p>Portl also offers a 14-inch-tall <strong>home device<\/strong>, called <a href=\"https:\/\/protohologram.com\/the-m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Proto M<\/a> which costs $5,000. The tabletop version projects a shrunken version of the subject. The company plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xliveglobal.com\/content\/portls-holograms-are-engaging-fans-around-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release an app<\/a> that will allow users to substitute a cellphone for the studio gear. Portl says it expects to sell 500 booths and 5,000 tabletop units this year.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sherrif Karamat, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Professional Convention Management Association<\/a>, has appeared as a hologram onstage with a live moderator and several others. He told the author, the conversation flowed easily, and he even elbow-bumped a fellow speaker at one point. \u201c<em>Holograms are here to stay, and they\u2019ll be used more and more &#8230;<\/em>\u201d<em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>As with all emerging techs, there are two sides to the coin. The green factor of eliminating travel is good. Portl&#8217;s Nussbaum said \u201cWithout having to jump in cars and airplanes, a lot of our customers have seen their <strong>carbon footprint<\/strong> shrink considerably, sometimes down to around 10% of what it used to be.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3><em>Are holograms ready for prime-time<\/em><\/h3>\r\n<p><em><strong>Holograms are not ready for prime-time<\/strong> for a number of reasons.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.starwars.com\/news\/6-ways-holograms-play-an-important-role-in-star-wars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-126489\" title=\"Star Wars\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/r2hologram.jpg?resize=125%2C89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Star Wars\" width=\"125\" height=\"89\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/r2hologram.jpg?resize=150%2C107&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/r2hologram.jpg?resize=75%2C53&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/r2hologram.jpg?resize=768%2C547&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/r2hologram.jpg?w=838&amp;ssl=1 838w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a>Vendors must bring down <strong>prices<\/strong> sharply before it will be widely adopted. $160,000 for one systems?<\/em><\/li>\r\n<li><em>The IEEE estimates that the <a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/6122872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>bandwidth requirements<\/strong><\/a> for holograms will increase to be in the range of <strong>1 Tbps<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensignal.com\/reports\/2022\/01\/usa\/mobile-network-experience-5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">best average 5G<\/a> download speed in the U.S. is 150 Mbps. <strong>Not enough<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li>\r\n<li><em>The current systems <strong>don\u2019t offer true holograms<\/strong>. Rather, they provide rather two-dimensional holographic projections. Strictly speaking, holograms are meant to be 3D images projected into thin air by lasers, so you can walk around and view them from all angles. Current systems, by contrast, require the box, which creates the illusion of depth, but when viewed from the side or behind it\u2019s \u2026 just a box.<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/magazine\/jul-aug-2020\/measuring-the-impact-of-a-bad-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-126510\" title=\"Bad boss\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bad_boss.jpg?resize=110%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Bad boss\" width=\"110\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bad_boss.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bad_boss.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bad_boss.jpg?w=422&amp;ssl=1 422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>Then there is the <strong>bad boss<\/strong> factor. IMO being fired by a hologram is no better than when Better.com CEO <strong>Vishal Garg<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/05\/business\/better-ceo-fires-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">terminated 900 employees<\/a> on a Zoom call just before the holidays.
