That is the <a title=\"News: Unemployment is at its Lowest Level in 54 years\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/blog\/2023\/02\/news-unemployment-its-lowest-level-54-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lowest jobless level<\/a> since May 1969. What means that their is a lot of hiring going on right now. <strong>Job seekers<\/strong> are likely to encounter <strong>personality tests<\/strong> at some point during the hiring process. A 2017 <a title=\"Society for Human Resource Management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Society for Human Resource Management<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"2017 Talent Acquisition Benchmarking Report\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230531233352\/https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/research-and-surveys\/Documents\/2017-Talent-Acquisition-Benchmarking.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> says that 32% of HR staff use <strong>personality tests to vet executive roles<\/strong>, and 28% use them for <strong>middle-management positions<\/strong>. The personality test business is expected to be a <a title=\"$6.5 billion industry\" href=\"https:\/\/leaders.com\/articles\/business\/personality-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$6.5 billion industry<\/a> by 2027. Today, there are more than <a title=\"Personality Tests \u2013 Everything You Need to Know in 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/psychometric-success.com\/aptitude-tests\/test-types\/personality-tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2,500<\/a> different personality tests on the market. The Myers-Briggs test is the most commonly used personality test.\u00a0The <a title=\"Myers-Briggs Company\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themyersbriggs.com\/en-US\/Products-and-Services\/Myers-Briggs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Myers-Briggs Company website<\/a> brags that their test is used by more than 88 percent of Fortune 500 companies.<\/p>\r\n<p>One of the things that <strong>Myers-Briggs<\/strong> claims to measures is how <strong>introverted or extroverted<\/strong> you are. In basic terms, introverted people direct their energy inward to their own feelings and thoughts, while extroverted people direct energy outward to other people and their environment. In reality, <strong>personality is far more complex<\/strong>. <a title=\"Laurel Steinberg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.laurelsteinberg.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"20\" data-uri=\"3cd6d5a1afa1cbd4d76918585adf3d25\">Laurel Steinberg<\/a>, PhD, a licensed psychotherapist in private practice <a title=\"Are you an introvert, extrovert, or in the middle? How to tell, plus pros and cons of each\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/guides\/health\/mental-health\/introvert-vs-extrovert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a> <a title=\"Insider\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Insider<\/em><\/a> that most people fall somewhere in between these two types.<\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"Author-styles-makeit-authorName--_ANaL\" title=\"Friederike Fabritius\" href=\"https:\/\/friederikefabritius.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Friederike Fabritius<\/a>, a neuroscientist who has worked with companies like Google and Deloitte on how to attract and retain top talent, found that <strong><a title=\"A neuroscientist shares the 4 \u2018highly coveted\u2019 skills that set introverts apart: \u2018Their brains work differently\u2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/07\/neuroscientist-shares-coveted-skills-that-set-introverts-apart-their-brains-work-differently.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">employers tend to favor extroverts<\/a><\/strong>. In an article for <a title=\"CNBC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>CNBC<\/em><\/a>, Ms. Fabritius warns that introverts should not be overlooked. Ms. Fabritius cites a <a title=\"Individual Differences in Amygdala-Medial Prefrontal Anatomy Link Negative Affect, Impaired Social Functioning, and Polygenic Depression Risk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jneurosci.org\/content\/32\/50\/18087.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> that found that <strong>introverts\u2019 <a title=\"Introverts\u2019 and Extroverts\u2019 Brains Really Are Different, According to Science\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20231225143309\/https:\/\/introvertdear.com\/news\/introverts-and-extroverts-brains-really-are-different-according-to-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brains work differently<\/a>,<\/strong> and have thicker gray matter compared to extroverts. In people who are strongly extroverted, gray matter was consistently thinner. Introverts also showed more activity in the frontal lobes, where <strong>analysis and rational thought<\/strong> take place. Another <a title=\"Cerebral Blood Flow and Personality: A Positron Emission Tomography Study\" href=\"https:\/\/ajp.psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/10.1176\/ajp.156.2.252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> that scanned brains of both introverts and extroverts found that, even in a relaxed state, the<strong> introverted brain was more active<\/strong>, with increased blood flow.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Introverts can focus longer<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/story\/the-time-albert-einstein-was-asked-to-be-president-of-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-127462\" title=\"Albert Einstein\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/einstein_albert.jpg?resize=111%2C79&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Albert Einstein\" width=\"111\" height=\"79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/einstein_albert.jpg?resize=150%2C107&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/einstein_albert.jpg?resize=75%2C54&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/einstein_albert.jpg?w=350&amp;ssl=1 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><\/a>Because they enjoy spending time alone, introverts tend to be more willing than extroverts to put in the hours alone necessary to <strong>master a skill<\/strong>. The author cites the case of the most famous introvert, <a title=\"Albert Einstein\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/physics\/1921\/einstein\/biographical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Albert Einstein<\/a>. As a child his teachers thought he was a quiet loner who seemed a million miles away, lost in his thoughts. Einstein <a title=\"An Invitation to Behavior Analysts: Review of in Search of Memory: The Emergence of A New Science of Mind by Eric R. Kandel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2529188\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201c<strong><em>It\u2019s that I stay with problems longer.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d This ability to focus intensely is a key characteristic of introverts, who often have <strong>more extended focus<\/strong> than extroverts.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Introverts are often \u201cgifted\u201d<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210226221033\/http:\/\/www.historyimages.com\/founding-fathers\/clipart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-127530\" title=\"Ben Franklin\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/franklin_ben.gif?resize=85%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ben Franklin\" width=\"85\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/franklin_ben.gif?resize=116%2C150&amp;ssl=1 116w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/franklin_ben.gif?resize=58%2C75&amp;ssl=1 58w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 85px) 100vw, 85px\" \/><\/a>On average, introverts and extroverts are the same in terms of intelligence. But statistics show that <a title=\"The Gifted Introvert\" href=\"https:\/\/highability.org\/the-gifted-introvert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">around 70% of gifted people are introverts<\/a>. People are considered \u201cgifted\u201d when they exhibit above-average intelligence or a superior talent for something, such as music, art or math. The author cites a <a title=\"Introversion and Social Engagement: Scale Validation, Their Interaction, and Positive Association With Self-Esteem\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2020.590748\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2013 study<\/a> on social conformity found that extroverts are more willing to go along with the opinion of the majority, even if it\u2019s wrong. Extroverts are more likely than introverts to succumb to social pressure. The researchers concluded: \u201c<em>The higher the pressure, a larger number of conforming responses are given by extroverts<\/em>.\u201d In contrast, \u201c<em>there is no difference in conforming responses given to high- and low-pressure levels by introverts.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\r\n<h3>Introvert-friendly workplace<\/h3>\r\n<p>Ms. Fabritius offers some ways that a manager can create a work environment that introverts can flourish in.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Respect boundaries &#8211;<\/strong> It takes up to 23 minutes for a person to regain focus after they\u2019ve been interrupted. Don\u2019t expect people to answer every email or Teams message immediately.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Shorten meetings<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; Many introverts are not fans of meetings. Allow people to decide how they want to communicate, even if it differs from yours.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Provide the option of privacy<\/strong> &#8211; Introverts tend to need privacy. The solution is a flexible work environment that provides silence and private space for introverts.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Dangers of using personality tests<\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flaticon.com\/free-icon\/legal_919793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-127533\" title=\"Dangers of using personality test\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/legal.png?resize=95%2C95&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dangers of using personality tests\" width=\"95\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/legal.png?w=128&amp;ssl=1 128w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/legal.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/a>There are consequences for using personality tests during the employment process.<\/p>\r\n<p>In 2018 <a title=\"Best Buy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bestbuy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Best Buy<\/a> settled a <a title=\"U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission<\/a> (EEOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/newsroom\/best-buy-and-eeoc-reach-agreement-resolve-discrimination-charge?renderforprint=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">case<\/a> where Best Buy had violated <a title=\"Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/statutes\/title-vii-civil-rights-act-1964#:~:text=Title%20VII%20prohibits%20employment%20discrimination,religion%2C%20sex%20and%20national%20origin.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Title VII of the <strong>Civil Rights Ac<\/strong>t of 1964<\/a> by using personality tests during the application process.<\/p>\r\n<p><a title=\"CVS Caremark Corporation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cvs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CVS Caremark Corporation<\/a> was charged by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/newsroom\/cvs-caremark-corporation-and-eeoc-reach-agreement-resolve-discrimination-charge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EEOC<\/a> with using personality testing to discriminate against employees. After receiving the charge, CVS stopped using the personality tests.<\/p>\r\n<p>In 2015, the EEOC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/newsroom\/target-corporation-pay-28-million-resolve-eeoc-discrimination-finding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discovered<\/a> that <a title=\"Target\" href=\"https:\/\/www.target.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Target<\/a> had been using pre-hire employment assessments to discriminate against candidates. Target paid $2.8 million for violating both the Civil Rights Act and the <strong>Americans with Disabilities Act<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<h3><em>rb-<\/em><\/h3>\r\n<p><em>As an introvert, I resent being pigeon holed by a test. I have had to take personality tests as part of the per-employment process (mostly in early career where the jobs were low paying.)
