Instead, they want <strong>libraries pay <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/160649\/book-companies-follett-overcharge-public-schools\">high licensing fees<\/a><\/strong> to \u201crent\u201d books from big tech vendors that regard your personal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90773185\/a-major-publishing-lawsuit-would-cement-surveillance-into-the-future-of-libraries\">privacy<\/a> as a premium feature and are vulnerable to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/library-apps-book-ban-schools-conservative-parents-rcna26103\"> censorship from book banners<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Today, most digital books can only be licensed, meaning there is effectively <strong>only one copy of a digital book<\/strong> and it can be <strong>edited or deleted at any time with zero transparency<\/strong>. They can <strong>prevent the free flow of information<\/strong> and undermine libraries\u2019 ability to serve their patrons.<\/p>\r\n<p>It is important that libraries actually own digital books, so that thousands of librarians all can independently preserve the files of important books.
