The website <a title=\"Native-Lands\" href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Native-Lands<\/a> attempts to document which native American people lived in your place before Columbus &#8220;discovered&#8221; them.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fort-Pontchartrain-du-Detroit.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-129306 size-medium\" title=\"Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit location in modern Detroit\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fort-Pontchartrain-du-Detroit.jpg?resize=150%2C96&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit location in modern Detroit\" width=\"150\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fort-Pontchartrain-du-Detroit.jpg?resize=150%2C96&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fort-Pontchartrain-du-Detroit.jpg?resize=75%2C48&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fort-Pontchartrain-du-Detroit.jpg?w=716&amp;ssl=1 716w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The European <strong>history of Detroit<\/strong> says the first recorded contact between Europeans and the Great Lakes Indians <a title=\"Great Lakes History: A General View\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mpm.edu\/educators\/wirp\/history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">occurred<\/a> between 1534 and 1542, when Jacques Cartier of France explored the St. Lawrence River to discover gold or silver. In 1701 <a title=\"Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac\" href=\"https:\/\/historydetroit.com\/people\/antoine_cadillac.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac<\/a> founded Detroit. But this ignores the<strong> history of the <a title=\"People of Detroit: Mound Builders\" href=\"https:\/\/historydetroit.com\/people\/mound_builders.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mound Builders<\/a><\/strong> who lived in the area before the Native American tribes.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Detroit area has populated by as many as seven different native peoples before Columbus arrived.<\/p>\r\n<p>The<strong> <a title=\"Peoria tribe\" href=\"https:\/\/peoriatribe.com\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peoria<\/a> people<\/strong> are the descendants of those who created the great mound civilizations in the central U.S. 2,000 thousand years ago. Their territory ranged from Jefferson City, MO to Madison, WI over to Detroit and Toledo.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/maps\/territories\/peoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129307\" title=\"Native Lands\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/firefox_3ctIHJ5jma.jpg?resize=301%2C181&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Native Lands\" width=\"301\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/firefox_3ctIHJ5jma.jpg?resize=150%2C90&amp;ssl=1 150w, 922w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>The <a title=\"Anishinabek Nation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anishinabek.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Anishinabewaki<\/strong><\/a> native Americans populated a territory that stretched from Regina, Saskatchewan to Ottawa, Toronto, Detroit and Minneapolis.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/maps\/territories\/anishinabek-%E1%90%8A%E1%93%82%E1%94%91%E1%93%88%E1%90%AF%E1%92%83\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129308\" title=\"Native Lands\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/firefox_81PiEFVgRD.jpg?resize=300%2C184&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Native Lands\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" 919w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Bodw\u00e9wadmi (<a title=\"Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center\" href=\"https:\/\/www.potawatomiheritage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Potawatomi<\/strong><\/a>) people lived in the Chicago area and ranged to Detroit, up the Door coast of Wisconsin and down the Mississippi river to near St. Louis MO.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/maps\/territories\/bodwewadmi-potawatomi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129309\" title=\"Native Lands\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/firefox_27Pyd2VecD.jpg?resize=301%2C182&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Native Lands\" width=\"301\" height=\"182\" 905w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Myaamia (<a title=\"Miami Tribe of Oklahoma\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamination.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Miami<\/strong><\/a>) native American people lived in an area that runs from the Door peninsula in Wisconsin down the Mississippi river into Kentucky and along the Ohio river to West Virginia and up to Detroit, on east into Ontario.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/maps\/territories\/miami\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129593\" title=\"Native Lands\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/firefox_3Vjo01PXGk.jpg?resize=299%2C177&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Native Lands\" width=\"299\" height=\"177\" noopener\"><strong>Wyandot<\/strong><\/a> people call the eastern half of Michigan from the Mackinaw area down to Detroit and over to Cleveland their home.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240909173348\/https:\/\/native-land.ca\/maps\/territories\/wyandot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129311\" title=\"Native Lands\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/firefox_HpoJTIUrsF.jpg?resize=300%2C185&#038;ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Fox<\/strong><\/a>) native people called Southeastern Michigan home. They ranged from Detroit east to London, ON, Buffalo NY, and Lake Ontario from Toronto to near Ottawa. Their range extended all the way to north Saulte Ste.
