Recently, the temperature outside Detroit hit 95 degrees Fahrenheit, an unusual high that underscores the reality of climate change. Another sign of climate change comes from CNN. They are reporting that climate change is <strong>melting the Antarctic ice sheet<\/strong> in a new, worrying way. The melting ice sheets will cause a<strong> rise in sea levels<\/strong> threatening coastal communities around the world.<\/p>\r\n<p>The <a title=\"Increased West Antarctic Ice Sheet melting \u2018unavoidable\u2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/media-post\/increased-west-antarctic-ice-sheet-melting-unavoidable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new study<\/a> suggests current projections may <strong>significantly underestimate the problem<\/strong>. Alex Bradley, an ice dynamics researcher at <a title=\"British Antarctic Survey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">British Antarctic Survey<\/a> (BAS) <a title=\"Scientists identify new Antarctic ice sheet \u2018tipping point,\u2019 warning future sea level rise may be underestimated\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/25\/climate\/antarctic-ice-sheet-tipping-point-sea-level-rise-climate-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a> <a title=\"CNN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNN<\/a>, \u201c<em>&#8230;our projections of sea level rise might be significant underestimates.<\/em>\u201d The current models used to project future sea level rise have not taken into account melting ice sheets. This seeping at the grounding line is causing <strong>accelerated melting<\/strong> and will lead to a tipping point. A tipping point is where small changes cause irreversible effects.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"width: 480px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-131598-1\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/grace_monthly_anomaly_ais_black_vel_2020_crf27_720p.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/grace_monthly_anomaly_ais_black_vel_2020_crf27_720p.mp4\">https:\/\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/grace_monthly_anomaly_ais_black_vel_2020_crf27_720p.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\r\n<p>The melting works like this, relatively warm ocean water opens cavities in the ice. The cavities allows more water to seep in. This\u00a0 causes more melting and larger cavities to form. The pattern repeats until the<strong> glacier has completely melted<\/strong>. A small increase in ocean temperatures can have a very big impact on the amount of melting, the study found. He is an ice dynamics researcher at BAS and author of the paper. It behaves like a tipping point, he told <a title=\"Scientists identify new Antarctic ice sheet \u2018tipping point,\u2019 warning future sea level rise may be underestimated\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/25\/climate\/antarctic-ice-sheet-tipping-point-sea-level-rise-climate-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNN.<\/a> \u201c&#8230; <em>where you can have a very sudden shift in how much melting is happening in these places.<\/em>\u201d<br \/><br \/>This tipping point would play out through a faster flow of ice into the oceans. This process is not currently included in models of future sea level rise. The <strong>West Antarctic Ice Sheet<\/strong> is particularly vulnerable to climate change. It is vulnerable because the land under it is below sea level and slopes downward. The BBC estimates that nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/chronicle\/article\/marine-biodiversity-and-ecosystems-underpin-healthy-planet-and-social-well-being\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-clickref=\"sciencefocus-188283\">half the world\u2019s population<\/a> live within 120 mile of a coastline. A sea level rise of 10 feet or more would <strong>inundate many of the world\u2019s major cities, including London, New York and Shanghai<\/strong>.
