Thirty years ago computers were hailed as the beginning of the paperless office era. In 1980 <em>The Economist<\/em> recommended that firms trying to <strong>improve productivity<\/strong>\u00a0\u201creduce the flow of paper, ultimately aiming to abolish it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately not many people listened to <em>The Economist<\/em>. Since they extolled the virtue of a paperless office, <strong>global paper consumption has increased by half<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/overuseofpaper.weebly.com\/alternative-solutions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-109565\" title=\"Paper consumption\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paper_consumption.png?resize=400%2C392&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Paper consumption\" width=\"400\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paper_consumption.png?w=595&amp;ssl=1 595w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paper_consumption.png?resize=75%2C73&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paper_consumption.png?resize=150%2C147&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The average American uses almost <strong>six 40-foot trees a year<\/strong> in paper. <a title=\"Gizmodo\" href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Gizmodo<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Gizmodo\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190102141939\/https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5898830\/were-using-way-more-paper-than-we-ever-have-before\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> don&#8217;t feel too bad. The <a title=\"European Union\" href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EU bureaucracy<\/a> in <a title=\"Brussels\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=50.85,4.35&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=50.85,4.35%20%28Brussels%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Brussels<\/a> pushed the <a title=\"Belgium\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201228052932\/https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/geos\/be.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Belgian<\/a> paper consumption to a whopping 8.5 trees per person. The equivalent to four <a title=\"Rockefeller Center Christmas tree\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140905031129\/http:\/\/www.rockefellercenter.com\/tour-and-explore\/the-tree-at-rockefeller-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rockefeller Center Christmas trees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Paperless office research says<\/h3>\n<p>The trend will not change. A <a title=\"Paperless society\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120815174856\/http:\/\/www.itnewslink.com:80\/article.php?id_article=14531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> from<a title=\"ITnewslink\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200928204650\/http:\/\/itnewslink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em> ITnewsLink<\/em><\/a> reports that more than half of Americans think the U.S. will never go paperless. Pollster <a title=\"Poll Position\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150508121609\/http:\/\/pollposition.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poll Position<\/a> conducted a national survey to see if Americans think the U.S. could ever be a paperless society.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paperless_graph-e1613063710294.png?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116311 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Poll Position research\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paperless_graph-e1613063710294-73x75.png?resize=73%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Poll Position research\" width=\"73\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paperless_graph-e1613063710294.png?resize=73%2C75&amp;ssl=1 73w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paperless_graph-e1613063710294.png?resize=145%2C150&amp;ssl=1 145w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/paperless_graph-e1613063710294.png?w=448&amp;ssl=1 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 73px) 100vw, 73px\" \/><\/a>Poll Position&#8217;s research found that 56% of Americans said they don\u2019t think the U.S. would ever be a paperless society. Only 20% said yes, one day we\u2019ll all go paperless. 24% of Americans were undecided or had no opinion on the question.<\/p>\n<p>Other Poll Position finding<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>63% of the 18-29 age group said the U.S. would never be a paperless society and 23% said we could be a paperless society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>56% of men and women said we could never be a paperless society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>58% of <a title=\"Republican Party (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/us-government-and-politics\/republican-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Republicans<\/a> and 51% of <a title=\"Democratic Party (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.democrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Democrats<\/a> believed we would never be a paperless society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can still vote in their online <a title=\"Poll Position Paperless Society\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120820023458\/http:\/\/pollposition.com:80\/2011\/12\/24\/will-we-ever-go-paper-less\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">companion poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I think that in an era of computers, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMZN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMZN<\/a>) <a title=\"Kindle Fire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=Kindle+Fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Kindle Fire<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) <a title=\"iPad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iPad<\/a> tablet computers, iPhones and <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) Android smartphones that paper consumption would decrease.
