The island has received many awards. In 2024, it was voted the &#8220;No. 1 Best Summer Travel Destination&#8221; in USA Today&#8217;s &#8220;10Best&#8221; Readers&#8217; Choice awards. The island was ranked the fifth-<a title=\"15 Secret Places to See Fall Foliage in the U.S.\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/secret-places-in-us-to-see-fall-foliage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">best place in America<\/a> to see Fall Foliage. Mackinaw Island also has a darker side. It is the home of many ghosts. In 2021, <a title=\"The Shadowlands\" href=\"https:\/\/theshadowlands.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">The Shadowlands<\/a> Haunted Places Index <a title=\"Is Mackinac Island Haunted? The Haunts of Mackinac in 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/wanderingmichiganwisconsin.com\/is-mackinac-island-haunted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">named Mackinac Island<\/a> the most haunted place in America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><a title=\"Mackinac Island\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mackinacisland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">Mackinac Island<\/a> <\/strong>is a top-rated destination for tourists and ghosts. More than <a title=\"The Spooky Side of The Great Lake State: Ten of Michigan's Most Haunted Places\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haunts.com\/blog\/haunted-places-michigan?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">100 individual ghosts<\/a> have been reported on the island, making it one of the most haunted places in Michigan!\u00a0The island&#8217;s <a title=\"Artifact type: Anishnabeg Presence at Mchilimackinac\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mackinacparks.com\/artifact_type\/anishnabeg-presence-at-mchilimackinac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">original inhabitants<\/a> were the <a title=\"Anishinaabek people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anishinaabe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc\">Anishinaabek people<\/a> (Odawa, Ojibway, and Potawatomi). The island was a <strong><a title=\"A look at Mackinac Island history through the centuries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mackinacisland.org\/blog\/countdown-to-2020-a-look-at-mackinac-history-through-the-centuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">sacred<\/a> burial ground<\/strong> for the Native Americans. However, in the late 1600s, <a title=\"Annals of Fort Mackinac\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/gdcmassbookdig.annalsoffortmack00kel\/?st=gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">European expansion<\/a> drove the native people out. Beginning in the 1790s, the British <a title=\"Fort Mackinac\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanheritage.com\/content\/fort-mackinac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">established a base<\/a> on the island during the American Revolutionary War. Later, it was the site of <strong>two significant battles<\/strong> in the <a title=\"Fort Mackinac and The War of 1812\" href=\"https:\/\/ss.sites.mtu.edu\/mhugl\/2015\/10\/11\/fort-mackinac\/#:~:text=On%20July%208,%201812,%20Captain%20Charles%20Roberts,%20began%20to%20gather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">War of 1812<\/a>. There was even a <strong><a title=\"Eastern Upper Peninsula Hauntings\" href=\"https:\/\/northernmichiganhistory.com\/eastern-upper-peninsula-hauntings\/#:~:text=It%20is%20believed%20to%20be%20the%20ghosts%20of%20seven%20women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">witch hunt<\/a><\/strong> on the island in the 1700s.\u00a0All that history has made for some pretty diverse ghost reports. Here are a few of the most well-known Mackinaw Island ghosts.<\/p>\n<h3 data-element-index=\"1\">Grand Hotel Ghosts<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/haunted_grand2-e1731364990162.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-132534\" title=\"Haunted Grand Hotel\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/haunted_grand2-e1728141923827-150x144.jpg?resize=125%2C120&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Haunted Grand Hotel\" width=\"125\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>The stately <a title=\"Grand Hotel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grandhotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\"><strong>Grand Hotel<\/strong><\/a>, with its <a title=\"World's Longest Porch: world record in Mackinac Island, Michigan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldrecordacademy.org\/2022\/08\/worlds-longest-porch-world-record-in-mackinac-island-michigan-422368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">record-breaking porch<\/a>, is a serene place to sit and chill. However, the hotel is also well known for its paranormal activity. In 1887, the Grand <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">was built<\/a> over an old cemetery with so many <a title=\"Ghost Hunting On Mackinac Island\" href=\"https:\/\/roadadventures.com\/ghost-hunting-on-mackinac-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">dug-up skeletons<\/a> that the excavators lost count. <a title=\"Michigan\u2019s Mackinac Island, Part l\" href=\"https:\/\/seeksghosts.blogspot.com\/2015\/12\/michigans-mackinac-island-part-l.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">Legend<\/a> says that the construction crew gave up on removing the bodies and instead built the Grand over the whole thing, causing the unsettled spirits to walk the grounds\u2014and inside\u2014the Grand Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>One of the more well-known spirits is the &#8220;<strong><a title=\"Hauntings of the Grand Hotel.\" href=\"https:\/\/99wfmk.com\/hauntedgrand2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">woman in black<\/a><\/strong>,&#8221; who walks her big white dog up and down the hotel&#8217;s massive front porch after dark. Another ghost is <strong>&#8220;<a title=\"Hauntings of the Grand Hotel.\" href=\"https:\/\/99wfmk.com\/hauntedgrand2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">Little Rebecca<\/a><\/strong>.&#8221; The little girl passed away on the grounds and haunts the fourth floor. She is often spotted floating or walking through the halls and disappearing to nowhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mac_mass-e1728677914664.png?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-132594 size-medium\" title=\"\u00a0&quot;evil entity&quot; that appears as a black mass with glowing red eyes.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mac_mass-e1728677914664-150x135.png?resize=150%2C135&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\u00a0&quot;evil entity&quot; that appears as a black mass with glowing red eyes.\" width=\"150\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mac_mass-e1728677914664.png?resize=150%2C135&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mac_mass-e1728677914664.png?resize=75%2C68&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mac_mass-e1728677914664.png?resize=768%2C694&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mac_mass-e1728677914664.png?w=982&amp;ssl=1 982w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The <a title=\"Ghost Hunting On Mackinac Island\" href=\"https:\/\/roadadventures.com\/ghost-hunting-on-mackinac-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">local<\/a> favorite is a story about an\u00a0&#8220;<strong>evil entity<\/strong>&#8221; that appears as a black mass with glowing red eyes.\u00a0A maintenance man working on the hotel&#8217;s theater stage reported that the black mass rushed after him and knocked him off his feet. He awoke two days later and never returned.<\/p>\n<h3>Mission Point Ghosts<\/h3>\n<p>What is now known as <strong>Mission Point Resort<\/strong> began in 1825 when Amanda and William Ferry built a home to &#8220;educate&#8221; native children. The home evolved into the <a title=\"Moral Re-armament\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moral_Re-Armament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">Moral Re-armament<\/a> Building, another haunted island building.<\/p>\n<p>In 1942, wealthy people on Mackinac Island led the MRA in Michigan. The MRA <a title=\"Arthur Shera Moral Re-Armament Collection, 1941-1950, and undated\" href=\"https:\/\/findingaids.lib.umich.edu\/catalog\/ehll--SheraArthur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">rented<\/a> the Island Hotel on Mackinac Island. In 1946, supporters bought the Mission Hotel, making Mackinac Island the <a title=\"Moral Re-armament collection, 1941-1950\" href=\"https:\/\/researchworks.oclc.org\/archivegrid\/collection\/data\/256791906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MRA&#8217;s world headquarters<\/a>. The MRA then established the short-lived (1966-1970) <a title=\"Mission Point Began as Conference Center and College\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mackinacparks.com\/blog\/mission-point-began-as-conference-center-and-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">Mackinac College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-132578 size-medium\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harvey-e1728602150469-96x150.png?resize=96%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harvey-e1728602150469.png?resize=96%2C150&amp;ssl=1 96w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harvey-e1728602150469.png?resize=48%2C75&amp;ssl=1 48w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harvey-e1728602150469.png?w=575&amp;ssl=1 575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the island&#8217;s most famous ghosts is <a title=\"The ghosts of summer: hauntings at Mackinac Island\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wktvjournal.org\/the-ghosts-of-summer-hauntings-at-mackinaw-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\"><strong>Harvey<\/strong><\/a>. Harvey\u00a0was a student at Mackinaw College. Tradition says he was so in love with his girlfriend that he wanted to marry her, but she turned his proposal down.<\/p>\n<p>According to legends, he went into the woods and committed suicide. He went missing in February. It took until July to find his body. Although suicide was the official cause of death, many believe that there was another person who was involved in his death.<\/p>\n<p>Harvey, the ghost, is <a title=\"Michigan\u2019s Mackinac Island, Part ll\" href=\"https:\/\/seeksghosts.blogspot.com\/2015\/12\/michigans-mackinac-island-part-ll.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">said<\/a> to<strong> flirt with women and be a practical joker with men<\/strong>. Others have reported hearing disembodied voices whispering in their ears and feeling watched or observed.<\/p>\n<h3>Lucy<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-132580 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lucy2-e1728606338345-126x150.png?resize=126%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lucy2-e1728606338345.png?resize=126%2C150&amp;ssl=1 126w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lucy2-e1728606338345.png?resize=63%2C75&amp;ssl=1 63w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lucy2-e1728606338345.png?w=570&amp;ssl=1 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/>The MRA buildings eventually became <strong>Mission Point Resort<\/strong>, a destination-style vacation complex. &#8220;<strong>Lucy<\/strong>&#8221; haunts Mission Point Resort. Tradition <a title=\"Is Mackinac Island Haunted?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hauntedrooms.com\/michigan\/haunted-places\/mackinac-island?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">says<\/a> that Lucy was suddenly taken ill on the island, but her parents had to leave to take care of business in Detroit. She died before her parents got back. Locals and tourists <a title=\"SyFy\u2019s \u2018Ghost Hunters\u2019 on Mackinac Island Wednesday\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ourmidland.com\/entertainment\/article\/SyFy-s-Ghost-Hunters-on-Mackinac-Island-6969295.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">report<\/a> seeing the apparition of a little girl on the balcony of Mission Point and hearing a young girl. The <a title=\"SyFy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.syfy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">SyFy Channel&#8217;s<\/a> TV show <a title=\"Ghost Hunters\" href=\"https:\/\/www.syfy.com\/videos\/ghost-hunters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">Ghost Hunters<\/a> <a title=\"Frozen in Fear\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1696695\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">featured<\/a> Mission Point Resort.<\/p>\n<h3>Drowning Pool Ghosts<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Drowning Pool:\u00a0<\/strong>In the early 1700s, when Fort Mackinac was at its heyday, many <a title=\"The island of the dead where ghosts outnumber the living\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/travel\/destinations\/the-island-of-the-dead-where-ghosts-outnumber-the-living\/news-story\/05fd913fd632f107b8097b298db9c8e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">brothels<\/a> popped up. The good people of Mackinaw accused seven women of being witches and enticing unsuspecting soldiers, fur traders, and husbands to their houses. They were subjected to a trial by water, also known as the &#8220;dunking&#8221; method. The women were tied to rocks and thrown into a lagoon between Mission Point and downtown Mackinac. If they sank, they were deemed innocent; if the accused floated, they were considered guilty. All seven women were innocent because they sank and drowned. Thus resulting in the <a title=\"The Haunted: Mackinac Island\" href=\"https:\/\/themorbidlibrary.com\/2020\/10\/10\/the-haunted-mackinac-island\/#:~:text=The%20drowning%20pool%20is%20located%20near%20the%20southern%20tip%20of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">drowning of seven women<\/a> in the<a title=\"The story of 'The Drowning Pool' at Mackinac Island\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/features\/2017\/05\/10\/the-story-of-the-drowning-pool-at-mackinac-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\"> Drowning Pool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fear of witchcraft in colonial America was <a title=\"Witchcraft in America: From Colonial Times to the Modern Era\" href=\"https:\/\/artoftheroot.com\/blogs\/news\/the-history-of-witchcraft-in-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">deeply rooted<\/a> in the belief that women who did not conform to the expected roles of purity and chastity were more susceptible to the devil&#8217;s influence.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors and residents report splashing, shadows, and dark figures floating above the surface of the Drowning Pool.
