If passed, SOPA would require internet providers to block access to sites in other countries hosting stolen intellectual property (IP) from the U.S. It also puts any site that has even an accidental link to a protected intellectual property (IP) at risk for legal action <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/these-websites-are-screwed-if-sopa-passes-2012-1?op=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the <a title=\"www.businessinsider.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>BusinessInsider<\/em><\/a> and <a title=\"iworkfortheinternet.org\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201112024045\/http:\/\/iworkfortheinternet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many<\/a> others.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13413\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 3px;\" title=\"Detroit\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/detroit.jpg?resize=114%2C63&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Detroit\" width=\"114\" height=\"63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/detroit.jpg?w=136&amp;ssl=1 136w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/detroit.jpg?resize=75%2C41&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 114px) 100vw, 114px\" \/><a title=\"Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=44.34,-85.58&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=44.34,-85.58%20%28Michigan%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Michigan<\/a> Democratic Congressman <a title=\"John Conyers\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20081130174647\/http:\/\/www.house.gov\/conyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Conyers Jr<\/a>, husband of convicted <a title=\"Detroit City Council\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Detroit_City_Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">Detroit City Council<\/a> bribe-taker, <a title=\"Monica Conyers\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monica_Conyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">Monica Conyers<\/a>, not only supports SOPA, but was a co-sponsor of SOPA (<a title=\"thomas.loc.gov\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160705075336\/http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d112:H.R.3261:\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H.R.3261<\/a>) <a title=\"propublica.org\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130801120154\/http:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/sopa\/C000714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to <em><a title=\"propublica.org\" href=\"http:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ProPublica.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"www.facebook.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210314191349\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CongressmanConyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conyers<\/a> support of SOPA may have been purchased for $158,574 in campaign contributions in 2010 from the Computers\/Internet and TV\/Movies\/Music industries according to <em>ProPublica<\/em>. This is an increase of nearly $14,000 from the 2008 election cycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13414 \" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 3px;\" title=\"eff_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/eff_logo.jpg?resize=92%2C63&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" height=\"63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/eff_logo.jpg?w=111&amp;ssl=1 111w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/eff_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C51&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 92px) 100vw, 92px\" \/><\/a>Stolen IP is a very broad and vague term. Most of the leading Internet sites rely on user-generated content and links that might have protected IP on them. <em>BI<\/em> predicts that some of the web&#8217;s favorite sites may cease to exist because of the bill Conyers sponsored.<\/p>\n<p>Which sites? The <em>BusinessInsider<\/em> asked anti-censorship advocacy groups like the <a title=\"Free Software Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fsf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Free Software Foundation<\/a>, the <a title=\"Electronics Frontier Foundation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a>, and the <a title=\"Participatory Politics Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.participatorypolitics.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Participatory Politics Foundation<\/a> for some answers and they projected the following (This is NOT a comprehensive list).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13416 \" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 3px;\" title=\"reddit_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/reddit_logo1.jpg?resize=71%2C99&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Reddit logo\" width=\"71\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/reddit_logo1.jpg?resize=54%2C75&amp;ssl=1 54w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/reddit_logo1.jpg?resize=109%2C150&amp;ssl=1 109w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/reddit_logo1.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=71%2C99&amp;ssl=1 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 71px) 100vw, 71px\" \/><\/a>The experts say <strong><a title=\"Reddit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reddit<\/a><\/strong> is a forum for linking to and commenting on content, and it&#8217;s all user-generated. As a result, some users are going to post or link to content that doesn&#8217;t have the rights to. Both of those are big no-nos for SOPA according to <em>BI<\/em>. <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa<\/a> ranks Reddit\u00a0#115.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual artist platform <strong><a title=\"deviantART\" href=\"http:\/\/deviantart.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">deviantART<\/a><\/strong> attracts 45 million unique visitors per month. The site allows emerging and established artists to exhibit, promote, and share their work on the web. It makes the SOPA hit list because if an artist infringes upon a copyrighted work, both the artist and the site may be subject to legal action. deviantART will have to closely censor what is uploaded on the site says <em>BI<\/em>. <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa<\/a> ranks\u00a0deviantART #131.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ebay.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13417 alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 3px;\" title=\"ebay_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ebay_logo-e1562990092474-150x71.jpg?resize=112%2C53&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"53\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ebay_logo-e1562990092474.jpg?resize=150%2C71&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ebay_logo-e1562990092474.jpg?resize=75%2C36&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ebay_logo-e1562990092474.jpg?w=228&amp;ssl=1 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 112px) 100vw, 112px\" \/><\/a>The virtual auction house and e-commerce site <strong><a title=\"eBay\" href=\"http:\/\/ebay.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">eBay<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : EBAY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-EBAY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EBAY<\/a>) makes this list because of sellers who use the site to distribute counterfeit merchandise. The article says the site does discourage selling these types of items with policies on IP. <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa<\/a> ranks eBay #20.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMZN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMZN<\/a>) could also be at risk due to sellers who attempt to distribute counterfeit goods. <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa<\/a> ranks Amazon #9.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Etsy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Etsy<\/strong><\/a>, the virtual marketplace of\u00a0over 800,000 active &#8220;shops&#8221; is threatened by SOPA because it allows users to buy and sell handmade or vintage items, art, and supplies according the <em>BI<\/em>. Etsy faces risk from SOPA because it will have to monitor the handmade goods it offers. If an IP holder claims to be harmed by any activity on the site, Etsy could be forced to suspend their service. That would harm all the vendors on the site and not just those accused of IP theft. <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa<\/a> ranks Etsy #162.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>BusinessInsider<\/em> says <strong>YouTube<\/strong> is at risk from SOPA despite its effort to keep pirated content out. If copyrighted works are found on <a title=\"YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube<\/a> by an IP holder, it could mean a suspension of service. SOPA will further censor the kinds of content the YouTube community can upload. <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa<\/a> ranks YouTube #3.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13420 alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 3px;\" title=\"facebook\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/facebook.jpg?resize=61%2C61&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Facebook\" width=\"61\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/facebook.jpg?w=117&amp;ssl=1 117w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/facebook.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 61px) 100vw, 61px\" \/><\/a><a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a><\/strong> also makes the experts list because if one of its 800 million users shares a link to a copyrighted work or to a site that is accused of infringing IP, Facebook could be held liable as well. SOPA will likely force Facebook to further monitor and censor its users. Facebook is ranked #2 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like YouTube, if copyrighted works are found on <strong><a title=\"Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flickr<\/a><\/strong> by an IP holder it could result in the suspension of service. SOPA will further censor the kinds of content the Flickr community can upload. Under SOPA, any copyright violation complaint made could suspend both the site and its revenue streams according to the article. WordPress faces risk by SOPA because the bill could mandate the site to further monitor and censor the bloggers. If a <a title=\"WordPress\" href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">WordPress<\/a> site is accused of violating IP protected works or a commenter links to a copyrighted work, <em>BI<\/em> predicts that could potentially shut down all the blogs hosted on the site. WordPress is ranked #18 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over 40 million people use <strong><a title=\"Tumblr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tumblr<\/a><\/strong> to share photos, poems, posts, and other creative content. Tumblr faces the same threat as WordPress according to <em>BI<\/em>. If a blogger or commenter uploads or links to copyrighted works, then Tumblr and its users could be at risk. However, given the user-generated nature of the site, <em>BI<\/em> says, Vimeo still faces risk from users who include even a portion of copyrighted material in their film. Vimeo is ranked #11 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Internet sites at risk<\/h3>\n<p>Experts say these Internet site are at most risk from SOPA include:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) ranked #1 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yahoo<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/chart\/YHOO\/EWjh1a3K-The-last-YHOO-chart-for-posterity-hello-AABA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YHOO<\/a>) is ranked #4 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a> ranked #6 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.twitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a><\/strong> ranked #10 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) <a title=\"Bing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bing<\/strong><\/a> is ranked #26 by <a title=\"Alexa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <em>BusinessInsider<\/em> concludes that the real victim of SOPA would be the <strong>startups<\/strong> (<em>which Conyers says SOPA will save jobs<\/em>)whose innovation will be restricted by this bill.
