His high-profile run as the leader for the 2012 nomination for the US presidential election has made him popular with spammers.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Mitt Romney\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/mitt-romney\/R000615\" rel=\"biographycom\">Mitt Romney<\/a>\u00a0is also the <strong>favorite politician of spammers. <\/strong>He is used to tout knockoff drugs and dubious bargains in junk e-mail <a title=\"www.net-security.org\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120420055130\/http:\/\/www.net-security.org\/secworld.php?id=12381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to a <a title=\"BitDefender\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bitdefender.com\/\" rel=\"homepage\">Bitdefender<\/a> analysis of 8 million unsolicited messages spread in January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/483752\/fifteen-percent-of-ohio-republicans-mitt-romney-killed-bin-laden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101504\" title=\"Mitt Romney\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Romney-Mitt-e1566600553586-113x150.jpg?resize=95%2C126&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mitt Romney\" width=\"95\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Romney-Mitt-e1566600553586.jpg?resize=113%2C150&amp;ssl=1 113w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Romney-Mitt-e1566600553586.jpg?resize=56%2C75&amp;ssl=1 56w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Romney-Mitt-e1566600553586.jpg?w=221&amp;ssl=1 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/a>Romney is mentioned in 45% of <a title=\"YouTube&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt; \" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/anwy2MPT5RE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SPAM<\/a>\u00a0messages that reference US politics, ahead of <strong>second-placed<\/strong> Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/history.princeton.edu\/about\/publications\/burning-down-house-newt-gingrich-fall-speaker-and-rise-new-republican-party\" rel=\"biographycom\"><strong>Newt Gingrich<\/strong><\/a>, who scored 33%. Romney\u2019s name was most often used in <a title=\"Phishing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phishing\" rel=\"wikipedia\">scam <\/a><a title=\"Phishing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phishing\" rel=\"wikipedia\">messages<\/a> that advertise <strong>low-interest loans<\/strong> or free credit score analysis while Gingrich was mentioned in junk mail promoting <strong>miraculous energy-saving devices<\/strong> that almost certainly don\u2019t exist. The article says most of these offerings actually redirect the unwary user to <strong>survey site scams<\/strong> or <strong>knockoff drugs for sexual dysfunctions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Republican Party (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republican_Party_%28United_States%29\" rel=\"wikipedia\">U.S. Republican<\/a> hopeful <a title=\"Ron Paul\" href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2012\/01\/ron-paul-newsletter-iowa-caucus-republican\/\" rel=\"biographycom\"><strong>Ron Paul<\/strong><\/a> came third in the BitDefender spammers\u2019 list, with 12.2%. The most popular politician outside the Republican race that caught the spammers\u2019 attention this year was <strong>Bill Clinton<\/strong>, with 4%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitdefender.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101506 size-thumbnail\" title=\"BitDefender logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BitDefender_logo-1-e1566600626293-66x75.jpg?resize=66%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"BitDefender logo\" width=\"66\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BitDefender_logo-1-e1566600626293.jpg?resize=66%2C75&amp;ssl=1 66w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BitDefender_logo-1-e1566600626293.jpg?resize=133%2C150&amp;ssl=1 133w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/BitDefender_logo-1-e1566600626293.jpg?w=177&amp;ssl=1 177w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 66px) 100vw, 66px\" \/><\/a>\u201c<em>Winning Most-Mentioned Politician in Bitdefender\u2019s spam survey is probably not an honor that many politicians want,<\/em>\u201d said Bitdefender E-Threats Analyst Bogdan Botezatu, who coordinated the spam study. \u201c<em>And I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll see spammers suddenly turning into political pundits. But the results could tell us which politicians spammers think are most likely to get a reaction from random e-mail readers. Spammers are, ultimately, after money and they\u2019re essentially making a bet on popularity when they favor one politician\u2019s name over another<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The author says <a title=\"Spam (electronic)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spam_%28electronic%29\" rel=\"wikipedia\">spam<\/a> messages often use <strong>names of celebrities or politicians<\/strong> in fragments of news items in trying to <strong>give credibility<\/strong> to the message and to trick anti-spam filters that look for the percentage of links versus other words in the message.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150622172735\/http:\/\/blog.lib.umn.edu\/cspg\/smartpolitics\/2011\/02\/selection_bias_politifact_rate.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101508 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Republican party\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/republicanparty03-e1566600697492-75x63.gif?resize=75%2C63&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Republican party\" width=\"75\" height=\"63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/republicanparty03-e1566600697492.gif?resize=75%2C63&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/republicanparty03-e1566600697492.gif?resize=150%2C126&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>In the BitDefender overall analysis of spam not filtered to include only political references &#8211; the Republican politicians were handily beat by celebrities including Jay Leno, Eva Longoria, Kobe Bryant, and even political commentator <a title=\"Rush Limbaugh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rush_Limbaugh\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Rush Limbaugh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>I wrote about spammers hijacking celebrities &#8216; identities to spread spam.
