The SquareTrade study proved the old adage that you get what you pay for. Premium priced notebooks had a lower malfunction and failure rate than lower-priced notebooks and netbooks. 3-year failure rate by price. SquareTrade says Netbooks have a 25.1% failure rate, Entry level notebooks have a 20.6% failure rate and Premium notebooks have a 18.1% failure rate.<\/p>\n<h3>According to the SquareTrade report<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/welcome.hp.com\/country\/us\/en\/prodserv\/laptops.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HP<\/a> is the market share leader in notebooks, and has the highest failure rate. Nearly 26% of its notebooks fails after three years.<\/li>\n<li>Gateway sees 23.5% of its machines fail after three years of use.<\/li>\n<li>Acer&#8217;s three-year failure rate is 23.3% .<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lenovo.com\/us\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lenovo<\/a> has more than 21% of its notebooks fail or have maintenance issues after three years of use.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/content\/products\/resultscompare.aspx?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;cs=19&amp;~oe=true&amp;prods=us~en~29~laptop-inspiron-10v_anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop-inspiron-10_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop-inspiron-1545_anav_1~~,us~en~29~inspiron-11z_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop-inspiron-14_anav_1~~,us~en~29~inspiron-14z-anav1~~,us~en~29~inspiron-15z-anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop-inspiron-13_anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop-inspiron-17_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop-studio-new-15_anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop-studio-14z_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop_studio_17_anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop-studio-xps-13_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop_studio_xps16_anav_1~~,us~en~29~adamo_onyx_13_anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop-alienware-m17x_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop-studio-xps-13_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop_studio_xps16_anav_1~~,us~en~29~laptop_studio_xps16_anav_1~~,us~en~29~adamo_onyx_13_anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop_studio_xps16_anav_1~~,us~en~29~adamo_onyx_13_anav1~~,us~en~29~laptop-alienware-m17x_anav_1~~&amp;~ck=mn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell\u2019s<\/a> 3-year failure rate is 18.3%.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/browse\/home\/shop_mac\/family\/macbook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Macs<\/a> have a 3-year failure rate of 17.4%.<\/li>\n<li>Sony\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110626070320\/http:\/\/www.sonystyle.com:80\/webapp\/wcs\/stores\/servlet\/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10151&amp;catalogId=10551&amp;langId=-1&amp;categoryId=16154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VAIOs<\/a> have a 3-year failure rate of 16.8%<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20101113190150\/http:\/\/www.toshibadirect.com\/td\/b2c\/laptops.to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toshiba\u2019s<\/a> 3-year failure rate is 15.7%<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asus<\/a> has a 3-year failure rate of 15.6%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only 4.7% of all notebook computers failed from a hardware malfunction in the first year of ownership, that rate more than doubled to 12.7% by the end of year two, and then leaped again to 20.4% by the time three years had passed.<\/p>\n<p>SquareTrade said that the increasing high failure rate was no surprise. &#8220;<em>Laptops have a high usage rate,<\/em>&#8221; Vince Tseng, the vice president of marketing, told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140620061510\/http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9141032\/Mac_laptops_less_reliable_than_ASUS_Sony_notebooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ComputerWorld<\/a><\/em> &#8220;<em>People leave them on all the time, and notebook components are sensitive to heat. Two, they&#8217;re portable and take a lot of abuse. And three, they&#8217;re more complex than most other consumer electronics devices.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rescuecom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RESCUECOM<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rescuecom.com\/RESCUECOM269.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Computer Reliability Reportfor Q2 2009<\/a> shows similar results to SquareTrade&#8217;s results. The Syracuse NY computer support vendor reported in August 2009 that the ASUS brand of personal computers for the second time in a row, results have shown ASUS to be the newest leader in reliable personal computers.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>ASUS (416)<\/li>\n<li>APPLE (394)<\/li>\n<li>IBM\/LENOVO (314)<\/li>\n<li>TOSHIBA (218)<\/li>\n<li>HP\/COMPAQ (142)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The SquareTrade findings must have hit close to home because Lenovo corporate media relations contact Ray Gorman took some strong objections to the report. A point by point <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130731195004\/http:\/\/blog.squaretrade.com:80\/2009\/11\/a-rebuttal-to-some-comments-about-our-laptop-failure-study.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">response<\/a> from SquareTrade is available on their blog.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Asus maintains it leadership position even though they introduced the Eee, an early notebook, in 2007.
