The Berlin-based <a title=\"Deutsche Telekom T-Labs\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180124164313\/http:\/\/www.laboratories.telekom.com:80\/public\/english\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T-Labs<\/a>\u00a0OSIRIS (Optically Supported IP Router Interfaces) research project sent 512 Gbps down each channel of a production network from <a title=\"Berlin Germany\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/rJ5ozot5sj658URh6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Berlin<\/a> to <a title=\"Hannover Germany\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/bFZRPnjXLgNNGHYd9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hannover<\/a> and back again. T-Labs\u2019 new tech should mean a staggering 24.6 Tbps (terabytes per second) max throughput for each optical fiber. \u201cWhen using all of the channels of an optical fiber &#8230; the new process permits a throughput of up to 24.6 Tbit\/s (24,600,000,000,000 bit\/s) to be attained on the maximum of 48 available channels,\u201d\u00a0 T-Labs Manager Heinrich Arnold <a title=\"www.techweekeurope.co.uk\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120306160637\/http:\/\/www.techweekeurope.co.uk:80\/news\/germans-reveal-512gbps-data-transmission-breakthrough-64891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> <a title=\"www.techweekeurope.co.uk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techweekeurope.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>TechWeek Europe<\/em><\/a>. <em>GigaOm<\/em> says that \u201ca collection of 3,696 CDs could thus be transferred over a single optical fiber at the same time\u201d using the new technique.<\/p>\n<p>T-Labs says existing networks don\u2019t need cable replacements to take advantage of the new speeds The firm achieved the new bandwidth record by using new technologies developed with <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160305080947\/http:\/\/alcatel-lucent.com\/wps\/portal?cookie_set=false&amp;country_code=us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alcatel-Lucent<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : ALU\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130924081146\/http:\/\/www.stockta.com:80\/cgi-bin\/analysis.pl?symb=ALU&amp;cobrand=&amp;mode=stock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ALU<\/a>). They used two carrier frequencies, two polarization planes, <a title=\"Quadrature amplitude modulation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quadrature_amplitude_modulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">16-QAM<\/a> quadrature amplitude modulation. &#8220;You can imagine it as squeezing and tilting the entire set-up around to get more capacity out,&#8221; Mr. Arnold told the <em>BBC<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But there are still an awful lot of copper-based networks in existence, The high value of copper makes copper-based networks vulnerable to copper theft. This is more than double the 186 Gbps record set by researchers in the US and Canada last year (Which I wrote about <a title=\"rbach.net\" href=\"http:\/\/rbachnet.wwwmi3-ss40.a2hosted.com\/index.php\/186gbps-transfer-sets-a-real-world-fiber-speed-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>).
