Starting in mid-January, McDonald&#8217;s will lift the $2.95 fee that it had charged customers for two hours of Wi-Fi Internet access, available at about 11,000 of its 14,000 domestic locations, McDonald&#8217;s USA Chief Information Officer David Grooms said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcdonalds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1583\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin: 2px;\" title=\"mcdonalds-logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/mcdonalds-logo-e1561320096656-150x140.gif?resize=100%2C93&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"mcdonalds-logo\" width=\"100\" height=\"93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/mcdonalds-logo-e1561320096656.gif?resize=150%2C140&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/mcdonalds-logo-e1561320096656.gif?resize=75%2C70&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>The free access is a partnership with <a title=\"AT&amp;T\" href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">AT&amp;T<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : T\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a>), which provides McDonald&#8217;s stores with wireless Internet. Free Wi-Fi is part of the fast-food chain&#8217;s transformation from its hamburger roots into a hang-out destination. Over at <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Mashable.com<\/em><\/a> they <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210518030241\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/2009\/12\/15\/mcdonalds-free-wifi-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speculate<\/a> that McDonald&#8217;s plans to start selling frappes and smoothies in mid-2010 as another part of the transformation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mashable.com<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161009073901\/http:\/\/mashable.com\/2008\/11\/07\/mcdonalds-free-wifi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a> that at&amp;t purchased the Texas-based <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Hotspot (Wi-Fi)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hotspot_%28Wi-Fi%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Wi-Fi hotspot<\/a> operator Wayport in 2008 for $275 million in cash. The privately held company administered over 80,000 Wi-Fi hotspots all over the world for airports and large organizations like Wyndham, Four Seasons, and McDonald\u2019s restaurants nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220128022747\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2008\/11\/06\/att-buys-wayport-to-keep-iphone-users-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stacey Higgenbotham over at <em>GigaOm<\/em><\/a> wrote in 2008 that at&amp;t made this deal to off-load the mobile data network, &#8220;<em>allows AT&amp;T to provide its customers with more places to do their bandwidth-sucking applications. Already, AT&amp;T is willing to let iPhone and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"BlackBerry Bold\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BlackBerry_Bold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">BlackBerry<\/a> users access its Wi-Fi hotspots free at Starbucks. It also means\u00a0AT&amp;T can hold out a bit longer before deploying its <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"4G\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/4G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">4G LTE network<\/a>, which is designed for data.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1585 alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin: 2px;\" title=\"attlogo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/attlogo-e1561320156626.jpg?resize=70%2C95&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"70\" height=\"95\" \/><\/a>This is nothing but a holding action so at&amp;t can launch more rich-content phones like Apple&#8217;s iPhone and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackberry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blackberry<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/na.blackberry.com\/eng\/devices\/blackberrybold9700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bold<\/a> and keep their old network in place. AT&amp;T already requires iPhone users to use their Wi-Fi connection to download files from <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"ITunes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/itunes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">iTunes<\/a> and prohibits bandwidth-intensive applications such as P2P sharing. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220128022747\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2008\/11\/06\/att-buys-wayport-to-keep-iphone-users-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>GigaOM<\/em><\/a>, part of the reason for this is the limitations of its HSPA network. While fast, it isn\u2019t designed to handle the continuous streams of data a song download or video upload requires. 3G is still designed for voice traffic, which is intermittent and much less bandwidth-intensive. The network has a data overlay, but that, too, is designed for bursts of data and not continuous streams. If too many people need continuous streams of data get on, it clogs the network, leaving other subscribers unable to access it.<\/p>\n<p>This move will allow AT&amp;T to delay deploying its 4G LTE network, and charge heavy users more. Ralph de la Vega, president, and chief executive for mobility and consumer markets at at&amp;t said \u201c<em>We\u2019re going to try to focus on making sure we give incentives to those small percentages to either reduce or modify their usage, so they don\u2019t crowd out the customers on those same cell sites,<\/em>\u201d he said.
