But the research firm <a title=\"Gartner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/technology\/home.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gartner<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : IT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:IT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IT<\/a>) believes <strong>the personal cloud will replace the PC<\/strong> as the center of our digital lives as soon as <strong>2014.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/technology\/home.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108710\" title=\"Gartner logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gartner_logo-3.png?resize=121%2C28&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Gartner logo\" width=\"121\" height=\"28\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gartner_logo-3.png?resize=150%2C35&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gartner_logo-3.png?resize=75%2C17&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gartner_logo-3.png?resize=768%2C178&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gartner_logo-3.png?resize=1024%2C237&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gartner_logo-3.png?w=1166&amp;ssl=1 1166w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gartner_logo-3.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 121px) 100vw, 121px\" \/><\/a>Steve Kleynhans, research vice president at Gartner, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130128064131\/https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/it\/page.jsp?id=1947315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>, \u201c<em>Major trends in client computing have shifted the market away from a focus on personal computers to a broader device perspective that includes smartphones, tablets, and other consumer devices.<\/em>\u201d He continues, \u201cEmerging cloud services will become the glue that connects the web of devices that users choose to access during the different aspects of their daily life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/Print\/2012\/10\/18\/ipexpo_2012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108713\" title=\"cloud-happy future\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_cloudman-e1570925263713-93x150.jpg?resize=68%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cloud-happy future\" width=\"68\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_cloudman-e1570925263713.jpg?resize=93%2C150&amp;ssl=1 93w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_cloudman-e1570925263713.jpg?resize=47%2C75&amp;ssl=1 47w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hp_cloudman-e1570925263713.jpg?w=286&amp;ssl=1 286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 68px) 100vw, 68px\" \/><\/a>In the article, Mr. Burton writes that Google plans a cloud-centered future with <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) Play and Android mobile OS. But the personal computer will also not miss out on the cloud, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) are planning to weave the <a title=\"Cloud Computing\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130730100250\/http:\/\/cloudcomputingx.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cloud<\/a> into the next generation of their desktop operating systems, <a title=\"Windows 8\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151201020902\/http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com:80\/b\/b8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Windows 8<\/a>, and OS X Mountain Lion.<\/p>\n<p>But a cloud-happy future will not be as easy as that, because Gartner says, \u201c<em>it will require enterprises to fundamentally rethink how they deliver applications and services to users.<\/em>\u201d Gartner sees a number of factors are converging to make for a perfect personal cloud storm by 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Megatrend No. 1: Consumerization<\/strong>\u2014 Gartner says what corporate IT has seen so far been a precursor to the major wave that is starting to take hold across all aspects of IT as several key factors come together:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.shrm.org\/executive\/blogpost\/The-Consumerization-of-HR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-117378\" title=\"Consumerization\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/consumerization.jpg?resize=110%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Consumerization\" width=\"110\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/consumerization.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/consumerization.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/consumerization.jpg?w=435&amp;ssl=1 435w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>Users are more technologically savvy<\/li>\n<li>The internet and social media have empowered and emboldened users.<\/li>\n<li>The rise of powerful, affordable mobile devices changes the equation for users.<\/li>\n<li>Through the democratization of technology, users of all types and statuses within organizations can now have similar technology available to them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Megatrend No. 2: Virtualization<\/strong> \u2014 Virtualization has improved flexibility and increased the options for how IT organizations can set up client environments.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medela.co.uk\/breastfeeding\/blog\/mindfulness-app-new-mums1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108730\" title=\"App-ification\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobile_apps-e1570925947201-150x144.png?resize=104%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"App-ification\" width=\"104\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobile_apps-e1570925947201.png?resize=150%2C144&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobile_apps-e1570925947201.png?resize=75%2C72&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobile_apps-e1570925947201.png?w=509&amp;ssl=1 509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 104px) 100vw, 104px\" \/><\/a>Megatrend No. 3: \u201cApp-ification\u201d \u2014 <\/strong>Apps change the way applications are designed, delivered, and consumed by users and it has a dramatic impact on all other aspects of the market.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nMegatrend No. 4: The Ever-Available Self-Service Cloud<\/strong> &#8211; The cloud opens a whole new level of opportunity for self-servicing users. Users will use a collection of devices, with the PC remaining one of many options, but no one device will be the primary hub. Rather, the personal cloud will take on that role. Access to the cloud and the content stored or shared in the cloud will be managed and secured, rather than solely focusing on the device itself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wired<\/em> says that former Microsoft chief software architect <a href=\"http:\/\/ozzie.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Ozzie<\/a> made the same point recently, <em>\u201cPeople argue about, \u2018Are we in a <a title=\"Tablets\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150213163031\/http:\/\/www.business.com\/technology\/tablets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"businesscom noopener noreferrer\">post-PC<\/a> world?\u2019. Why are we arguing? Of course, we are in a post-PC world.\u201d<\/em> Ozzie reportedly told a conference,\u00a0 <em>\u201dThat doesn\u2019t mean the PC dies; that just means that the scenarios that we use them in, we stop referring to them as PCs, we refer to them as other things.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Goodie for Gartner, they get paid for codifying the obvious. Consumers are moving to the personal cloud. DVDs vs.Netflix streams. Files on your hard drives vs. some distant data center run by Dropbox. Photo albums vs. Flickr.
