The research firm says that companies are starting to let employees use privately owned laptops for work purposes, according to a\u00a0 survey of 500 IT managers in the U.S., U.K., and Germany. The IT managers said they expect that percentage to creep higher next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1736 aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0pt none;\" title=\"pcs_at_work\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/pcs_at_work-e1561769850940-150x78.gif?resize=256%2C133&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/pcs_at_work-e1561769850940.gif?resize=150%2C78&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/pcs_at_work-e1561769850940.gif?resize=75%2C39&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gartner says that some employees like the trend because it means they can have more powerful laptops and newer designs than their companies&#8217; IT departments offer. The survey found that 47% of workplaces have banned employee-owned <a title=\"Personal computer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personal_computer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">PCs<\/a>, 43% have policies that allow the use of employee-owned PCs for work-related purposes, and 10% have no policy on the matter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1705 size-full alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin-left: 2px; margin-right: 2px;\" title=\"Gartner\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gartner2-e1561769906738.gif?resize=90%2C21&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"21\" \/><\/a>Gartner believes this trend is popular with employers because of cost. When employees bring their own hardware to work, and the employer doesn&#8217;t pay for it or support it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Who was Gartner interviewing? What regulated firm (SOX, PCI, <a title=\"Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Health_Insurance_Portability_and_Accountability_Act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">HIPPA<\/a>, etc.) would allow unknown devices on their internal network. This trend needlessly exposes the company to malware and <a title=\"Data theft\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Data_theft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">data theft<\/a> risks. We encourage our clients to go in the opposite direction. We talk to them, write and enforce policies to ban personal devices like <a title=\"USB flash drive\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USB_flash_drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">USB drives<\/a> and <a title=\"IPod\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">iPods<\/a> for the data theft risk.
