Catherine Venusto, 45, hacked into the <a title=\"Northwestern Lehigh School District\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nwlehighsd.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Northwestern Lehigh School District<\/a> computer system and <strong>altered the grades of her two children<\/strong>, <em><a title=\"ABC News\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/abc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener twitter noreferrer\">ABC News<\/a><\/em> reports. Venusto had worked at the district as an administrative office secretary from 2008 through April 2011. A year before she quit, Venusto, of <a title=\"New Tripoli, Pennsylvania\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.6808333333,-75.7519444444&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.6808333333,-75.7519444444%20%28New%20Tripoli%2C%20Pennsylvania%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">New Tripoli<\/a>, PA had been accused be being a hacker. She reportedly changed her daughter\u2019s failing grade to a medical exception. All six of those charges are <strong>third-degree felonies<\/strong>. <a title=\"Pennsylvania State Police\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140109145741\/http:\/\/www.psp.state.pa.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Pennsylvania State police<\/a> say Venusto admitted changing the grades, saying <strong>she thought her actions were unethical but not illegal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p title=\"Pennsylvania State Police\">When <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/mom-charged-hacking-school-computers-change-childrens-grades\/story?id=16812838#.UAhmus_xLJE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>ABCNews.com<\/em><\/a> attempted to contact Ms. Venusto at her current job as an event co\u00f6rdinator at <a title=\"Lehigh University\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lehigh.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Lehigh University<\/a>, a school employee said her employment ended Wednesday. Venusto&#8217;s lawyer, Thomas Carroll, declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/miamilawfool.blogspot.com\/2011\/01\/law-school-grades-feel-free-to-comment.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-102193 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Grades\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/grades.jpg?resize=75%2C71&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Grades\" width=\"75\" height=\"71\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/grades.jpg?resize=75%2C71&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/grades.jpg?resize=150%2C142&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/grades.jpg?w=652&amp;ssl=1 652w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;<em>I&#8217;m concerned on numerous levels<\/em>,&#8221; said Jennifer Holman, Northwestern Lehigh School District&#8217;s assistant superintendent. &#8220;<em>When we say systems, there were three different systems violated\u2026There were 10 different users that at some point had their email violated.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>PA State police investigate the hacker<\/h3>\n<p>Ms. Holman told <em>ABCNews.com<\/em> that she first realized something was wrong when a teacher asked why superintendent Mary Ann Wright was in that teacher&#8217;s online grade book. Once Wright explained she was never in the grade book the investigation began. Administrators and state police looked for whoever <strong>used Wright&#8217;s username and password without permission<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Password on monitor\" href=\"https:\/\/flowerblossoms.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/20\/common-password-mistakes-and-how-to-create-stronger-passwords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0px none; margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 3px;\" title=\"Password\" src=\"https:\/\/flowerblossoms.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/password_monitor.jpg?w=450&#038;resize=81%2C78\" alt=\"Bad passwords\" width=\"81\" height=\"78\" \/><\/a>PA State police discovered Venusto used Wright&#8217;s credentials 110 times to access the district&#8217;s online grading system, according to the District Attorney&#8217;s office. Venusto also allegedly <strong>accessed nine other faculty members&#8217; email accounts<\/strong> without permission. She also accessed the human resources &#8220;H-drive&#8221; to view &#8220;<em>thousands of files associated with district policy, <strong>contract information, employee reports, and personnel issues<\/strong>.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Superintendent Wright released a statement in anticipation of Venusto&#8217;s arraignment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/ushome\/index.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-102175 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mommy_hacker-e1567035802783.jpg?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a>&#8220;<em>We deeply regret this incident and that this unauthorized access occurred, and we sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause,<\/em>&#8221; Wright <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160729113056\/http:\/\/www.nwlehighsd.org\/news.cfm?story=100693&amp;school=0\" target=\"external\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>. &#8220;<em>We are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again, and new security procedures are in place to better assure that our systems are protected from such attempts.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The court set bail at $30,000. Venusto will not have to pay the bail unless she does not appear in court for her preliminary hearing. I will mention in passing the declining parenting standards which are creating a bunch of narcissistic and self-absorbed generation that has no consciousness to what right and wrong is.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Administration and IT departments both bear the blame for this intrusion. Some easy-to-implement best practices could have shut the mommy hacker down quicker. They should have required regular password changes.
