Backup generators provide the emergency power required to keep servers online during utility power outages. <a title=\"Data Center Knowledge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Data Center Knowledge<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Microsoft: We\u2019re Eliminating Backup Generators \" href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2012\/09\/17\/microsoft-were-eliminating-backup-generators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that the growing focus on using clean energy to power large data centers is prompting\u00a0<a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) and other tech titans to ditch their generators, along with their diesel fuel emissions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141006131836\/http:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/14\/pandora-alibris-data-center-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"backup energy noopener options noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"backup energy options \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.greenbiz.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/gbz_article_primary_breakpoints_kalapicture_screen-lg_1x\/public\/images\/articles\/featured\/green-data-centers.jpg?resize=127%2C77&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"backup energy options \" width=\"127\" height=\"77\" \/><\/a>Microsoft is the latest company to announce its intention to cut its use of diesel generators. The move is part of a broader initiative to make Microsoft\u2019s server farms more sustainable and less reliant on the <a title=\"Electric power transmission\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_power_transmission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">utility grid<\/a> according to <em>DCK<\/em>. Microsoft Utility Architect <a title=\"Brian Janous\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalfoundationservices.com\/blog.aspx?author=Brian%20Janous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Janous<\/a> wrote in a recent <a title=\"Microsoft\u2019s Energy and Efficiency Evolution to Power the Cloud\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalfoundationservices.com\/posts\/2012\/september\/12\/microsofts-energy-and-efficiency-evolution-to-power-the-cloud.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><em>We are currently exploring alternative <a title=\"Emergency power system\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emergency_power_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">backup energy<\/a> options that would allow us to provide emergency power without the need for diesel generators, which in some cases will mean transitioning to cleaner-burning natural gas and in other cases, eliminating the need for backup generation altogether.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210226050055\/http:\/\/www.bloomenergy.com\/fuel-cell\/energy-server-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100137 \" title=\"Bloom Energy, fuel cells\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_bloom_energy.png?resize=152%2C76&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Bloom Energy, fuel cells\" width=\"152\" height=\"76\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_bloom_energy.png?resize=150%2C75&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_bloom_energy.png?resize=75%2C37&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_bloom_energy.png?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><\/a>DKC<\/em> speculates that the reference to natural gas suggests that Microsoft is preparing to add fuel cells to replace its generators. That could be good news for <a title=\"Bloom Energy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloom Energy<\/a>,\u00a0 which recently scored wins to <a title=\"eBay: Bloom Boxes Will Power Utah Data Center\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2012\/06\/21\/ebay-bloom-boxes-will-power-utah-data-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replace generators and UPS<\/a> units at new data centers of <a title=\"eBay\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eBay<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : EBAY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-EBAY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EBAY<\/a>) in Utah and supplement power <a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) data center in North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><em>DCK<\/em> explains the <a title=\"Energy Server Architecture\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210226050055\/http:\/\/www.bloomenergy.com\/fuel-cell\/energy-server-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloom Energy Server<\/a> is a solid oxide fuel cell technology that converts fuel to electricity through an electrochemical reaction, without any combustion. The Bloom box can continue to run during grid outages because they are housed at the customer premises. Bloom boxes can run on natural gas or a range of other biofuels, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2012\/04\/30\/idatacenter-will-use-landfill-powered-bloom-boxes\/\">methane gas from landfills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osu.edu\/imageoftheday\/?theme=43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100139 \" title=\"Diesel engine exhaust is a regulated pollutant\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/smoke_stack-e1565462678991-107x150.jpg?resize=90%2C126&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Diesel engine exhaust is a regulated pollutant\" width=\"90\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/smoke_stack-e1565462678991.jpg?resize=107%2C150&amp;ssl=1 107w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/smoke_stack-e1565462678991.jpg?resize=53%2C75&amp;ssl=1 53w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/smoke_stack-e1565462678991.jpg?w=516&amp;ssl=1 516w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 90px) 100vw, 90px\" \/><\/a>Another reason MSFT may be replacing generators according to <em>DCK<\/em>\u00a0is that they have caused Redmond several headaches in recent years, including an <a title=\"Windows Azure\" href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsazure.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azure cloud<\/a> outage in Europe (when multiple generators didn\u2019t start during a utility outage) and public controversy about whether the diesel emissions from Microsoft\u2019s generators in <a title=\"Quincy, Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=47.2336111111,-119.852222222&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=47.2336111111,-119.852222222%20%28Quincy%2C%20Washington%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Quincy, WA<\/a> could cause health problems for local residents. Diesel engine exhaust is a regulated pollutant and can be toxic in high concentrations.<\/p>\n<p>Or Microsoft\u2019s motivation could be to become less dependent on the utility grid and use renewable energy to power its servers the blog says. The company says its \u201cdata plants\u201d will break new ground in integrating electricity and computing, bring together data centers and renewable power generation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youngfemaleprofessionals.blogspot.com\/2012\/06\/clock-watching-cow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100141 \" title=\"Biomass waste-powered data center.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cow2.jpg?resize=119%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Biomass waste-powered data center.\" width=\"119\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cow2.jpg?resize=150%2C113&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cow2.jpg?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cow2.jpg?w=664&amp;ssl=1 664w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 119px) 100vw, 119px\" \/><\/a>One type of renewable energy Microsoft has explored is a waste-powered data center. It could be built on the site of a water treatment plant or landfill. In his blog post, Janous indicated that Microsoft is evaluating a biomass project in Europe (<em><strong>rb-<\/strong> I wrote HP&#8217;s plan to use manure to run a data center <a title=\"Cows Can Power Your Next Server Farm\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-Pv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Given the unreliability of the <a title=\"Electrical grid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electrical_grid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">electric grid<\/a> and the need for continuous availability of cloud services, Microsoft maintains diesel generator backup at all of our data centers&#8230;<\/em>\u201d Janous wrote. \u201c<em>These generators are inefficient and costly to operate. From both an environmental and a cost standpoint, it makes no sense to run our generators more than we absolutely must<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120511092658\/http:\/\/www.datatrend.com\/optimize-it\/516\/beautiful-data-centers-our-top-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100144 \" title=\"Microsoft data center\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_msft_wa.jpg?resize=136%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Microsoft data center\" width=\"136\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_msft_wa.jpg?resize=150%2C111&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_msft_wa.jpg?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_msft_wa.jpg?w=535&amp;ssl=1 535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/><\/a>Microsoft is also considering \u201c<em>long-term purchases from larger grid-connected installations that would displace some portion of our grid purchases,<\/em>\u201d Janous wrote. <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) has embraced a similar strategy, using power purchasing agreements to add more than 200 megawatts of wind power to the local utility grids that support its data centers.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is taking steps to position itself to make bulk power deals according to <em>DCK<\/em>. \u201c<em>We have recently signed on as an advisory board member with <a title=\"Altenex\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180317165049\/http:\/\/altenex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Altenex<\/a>, an operator of a network that enables member companies to more efficiently engage with developers of renewable energy projects,<\/em>\u201d Janous said. \u201c<em>We expect this engagement with Altenex to improve our ability to identify and evaluate cost-effective clean energy projects.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100146\" title=\"Cummins logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_gen_cummins.png?resize=90%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cummins logo\" width=\"90\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_gen_cummins.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_gen_cummins.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_gen_cummins.png?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 90px) 100vw, 90px\" \/>I recall as a newbie techie the first time I had to be in on Sunday morning to work with the site engineer to crank up the 100 HP Cummins standby generator. The firm ran the monthly test to make sure the critical systems stayed up. The generator was enclosed in a secure room that contained the heat and noise. The exhaust was vented out.
