The report says students were permitted to take the iPads home as a continuing educational tool.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment lasted less than three weeks because the students became targets for thieves. Between Sept. 26 and Oct. 13, a dozen middle school students had their iPads stolen while on their way to and from school, Cleveland Heights police chief Jeff Richardson said.<\/p>\n<p>Since mid-October, the district has collected the tablets at the end of the school day and students no longer could take them home.<\/p>\n<p>More than 130 people attended a meeting seeking answers about how to go ahead and whether crime will win out over education. The reporter writes that the meeting was meant as an information-gathering session. The plan included the tablet pilot project at 14 secondary schools. Competing tablet makers, led by <a title=\"Samsung Electronics Co.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung<\/a> (<a title=\"KS : 005930\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/005930:KS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">005930<\/a>), gained substantial ground during the third quarter of 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) market share dropped from 65 percent in the second quarter to just over 50% in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Samsung&#8217;s share doubled to 18%, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMZN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMZN<\/a>) and <a title=\"usa.asus.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASUS<\/a> (<a title=\"TT : 2357\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=2357:TT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2357<\/a>) each saw their share rise from under five percent to around nine percent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"2012 3Q Worldwide tablet shipments\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150910063402\/http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/view\/506931\/competitors-challenge-apples-grip-on-the-tablet-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"2012 3Q Worldwide tablet shipments\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.technologyreview.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/tabletsales.jpg?resize=368%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"2012 3Q Worldwide tablet shipments\" width=\"368\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As is clear from the graph above, <em>TR<\/em> concludes that it\u2019s too early to tell how quickly the market is diversifying. Apple\u2019s lag was at least partly due to rumors about its plans to release the iPad Mini, which led some consumers to hold off on buying a new <a title=\"iPad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iPad<\/a>, according to IDC. Teachers claim that tablets help students with lessons, improve memory and language skills, and cause them to act more independently. The excitement among tablet makers is almost as great. Tablet makers like Apple are pursuing public schools for more sales.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MIT\u2019s Technology Review\" href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>MIT&#8217;s Technology Review<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Tablet Makers Pursue Public Schools\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151212181836\/http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com:80\/news\/506321\/tablet-makers-pursue-public-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brings us<\/a> data from <a title=\"IDC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IDC<\/a> which says global shipments of tablets will reach 177 million this year, and 11 million of them were purchased by businesses or government of those, IDC analyst <a title=\"IDC analyst Tom Mainelli \" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230202181947\/https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=PRF002764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Mainelli<\/a> says, the \u201cvast majority\u201d were sold to schools.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mainelli thinks that within a few years all U.S. students will have some access to a tablet at school. With 55 million students in the country\u2019s schools, that\u2019s a lot of potential sales. The article says it\u2019s not just a one-time product push: beyond selling tablets to schools and districts, tablet makers see a chance to set up future sales by establishing brand loyalty with young users. \u201c<em>All these guys see huge opportunities here,<\/em>\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The most successful tablet maker in the education market is <a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>). In its July 2012 quarterly report, the company said it sold one million <a title=\"iPad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iPads<\/a> to schools. <em>TR<\/em> notes that Apple hasn\u2019t reported education numbers since then, but it did unveil a smaller, cheaper model that it expects will also appeal to students and educators: the $329 <a title=\"Apple iPad Mini\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131022090414\/https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad-mini\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iPad Mini<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AMZN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMZN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMZN<\/a>) also highlighted its interest in the education market with the debut of <a title=\"Whispercast\" href=\"https:\/\/whispercast.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whispercast<\/a>, a service to manage its <a title=\"Amazon Kindle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Kindle<\/a> e-readers en masse. <a title=\" Jay Marine Vice President, Kindle at Amazon.com \" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/jay-marine\/0\/231\/2a5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jay Marine<\/a>, vice president of product management for the Kindle, the company sees the education market as \u201c<em>a meaningful business opportunity.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smaller companies are making tablets aimed specifically at the education market. Two firms are <a title=\"CurriculumLoft\" href=\"https:\/\/www.curriculumloft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CurriculumLoft<\/a>, which makes the <a title=\"Kuno tablet\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211130070224\/https:\/\/www.eschoolnews.com\/2012\/07\/06\/seven-ipad-alternatives-for-schools\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kuno tablet<\/a>, and <a title=\"Brainchild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brainchild.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brainchild<\/a>, which sells the<a title=\"Kineo\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130118114856\/http:\/\/www.brainchild.com:80\/kineos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Kineo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brainchild CEO <a title=\"Brainchild CEO Jeff Cameron\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/jeff-cameron\/4\/892\/63a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Cameron<\/a> claims his company\u2019s $299 tablet, which runs on <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) <a title=\"Android\" href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/android\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Android software<\/a> is better than mass-market devices because it was built for educational use. <em>TR<\/em> says that, unlike most tablets, the Kineo has a replaceable battery, resulting in a longer lifespan.
