will put control of the Internet into the hands of its users,<\/em>&#8221; said OTI Director Sascha Meinrath. &#8220;T<em>he partners OTI works with in Detroit are not only self-provisioning connectivity for local residents, they&#8217;re proofing out technologies that support free, safe, ubiquitous communications around the globe<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120330191542\/http:\/\/www.infosecurity-magazine.com:80\/view\/24809\/comment-businesses-need-to-wake-up-to-open-wireless-access-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103923 size-medium\" title=\"put control of the Internet into the hands of its users\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wireless-internet-e1568160474219-150x100.png?resize=150%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"put control of the Internet into the hands of its users\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wireless-internet-e1568160474219.png?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wireless-internet-e1568160474219.png?resize=75%2C50&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wireless-internet-e1568160474219.png?w=417&amp;ssl=1 417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><a title=\"Stacey Higginbotham\" href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/author\/shigginbotham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stacey Higginbotham<\/a> at <a title=\"GigaOM\" href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>GigaOM<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Detroit is the testing ground for a new open source wireless network technology\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211211080631\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2012\/12\/18\/detroit-is-the-testing-ground-for-a-new-open-source-wireless-network-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> the new stack has technologies such as <a title=\"Serval\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20231116083814\/http:\/\/www.servalproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Serval<\/a>, which would <strong>enable the handsets to recognize the Commotion network<\/strong>, <strong><a title=\"Tor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tor<\/a><\/strong>, a program that can hide where a user is coming from and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180914054441\/https:\/\/wush.net\/trac\/rangepublic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">OpenBTS<\/a>, an <strong>open source base station<\/strong> that runs software that can <strong>interface between <a title=\"Voip\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190710223245\/https:\/\/www.wikinvest.com\/concept\/Voip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikinvest noreferrer\">VoIP<\/a> networks and GSM radios<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The OTI <a title=\"ADVISORY: Detroit Breaking Ground as Lab for Wireless Innovation\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121227145605\/http:\/\/oti.newamerica.net:80\/pressroom\/2012\/advisory_detroit_breaking_ground_as_lab_for_wireless_innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">release<\/a> on the news notes that <strong>more than half of Detroit residents do not have Internet service<\/strong> at home due to the cost of service and a lack of investment in infrastructure by Internet service corporations.<\/p>\n<p><em>GigaOM<\/em> also notes that the public release of Commotion follows a funding round for a company called <a title=\"Open Garden\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220906003829\/https:\/\/opengarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Garden<\/a>, which is pursuing a similar mesh network creation software.
