Symbolics Computers of Cambridge, MA registered the first Internet address ending in dot com <a title=\"First .com\" href=\"http:\/\/symbolics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">symbolics.com<\/a> in 1985. The website <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekosystem.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geekosystem<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130815001534\/http:\/\/www.geekosystem.com:80\/tag\/symbolics-computers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> symbolics.com\u00a0was launched by the computer manufacturer Symbolics, Inc., which was a spin-off from <a title=\"MIT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIT\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csail.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AI Lab.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/symbolics.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-106733\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/symbolics_logo.jpg?resize=128%2C80&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/symbolics_logo.jpg?w=128&amp;ssl=1 128w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/symbolics_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C47&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 128px) 100vw, 128px\" \/><\/a>The company went bankrupt in the mid-\u201990s (but not before their graphics division helped animate the orca in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Symbolics#Movies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Free Willy<\/a>)<\/em>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2009\/08\/27\/25-years-later-first-registered-domain-name-changes-hands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was sold<\/a> in 2009 to a domain name investment company, <a href=\"http:\/\/xf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">XF Investments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mark McLaughlin, CEO of Verisign, told BBC News, &#8220;<em>This birthday is really significant because what we are celebrating here is the Internet, and .com is a good, well-known placeholder for the rest of the Internet<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verisign.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-106736\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/verisign_logo.jpg?resize=110%2C56&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"56\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/verisign_logo.jpg?w=110&amp;ssl=1 110w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/verisign_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C38&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>The <a title=\"BBC\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/8567414.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> says it is unlikely that the early dot com&#8217;s were thought of as businesses as the early internet was not seen as a place for commerce but rather as a platform for governmental and educational bodies to trade ideas. It took until 1997, well into the internet boom, before the one millionth .com was registered.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who would have guessed 25 years ago where the internet would be today. This really was a groundbreaking event,&#8221; McLaughlin said, &#8220;<em>with 668,000 dot com sites registered every month, they have become part of the fabric of our lives<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joeydevilla.com\/2007\/01\/27\/for-sale-symbolics-xl1200-lisp-machine-backstory-included\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-119328\" title=\"symbolics xl1200 lisp machine\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/symbolics_xl1200_lisp_machine.jpg?resize=62%2C120&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"symbolics xl1200 lisp machine\" width=\"62\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/symbolics_xl1200_lisp_machine.jpg?resize=77%2C150&amp;ssl=1 77w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/symbolics_xl1200_lisp_machine.jpg?resize=39%2C75&amp;ssl=1 39w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/symbolics_xl1200_lisp_machine.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 62px) 100vw, 62px\" \/><\/a>An estimated 1.7 billion people &#8211; one-quarter of the world&#8217;s population &#8211; now use the internet. Verisign&#8217;s McLaughlin only sees that figure growing over the next quarter of a century. &#8220;<em>I think that the way we access information today, mostly still through PCs and laptops is highly likely to change; that the voice will be more important than text input<\/em>.&#8221; He continues, &#8220;I<em> think the whole fabric of how we access, search, find and get information is going to be radically different.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BBC reports that Verisign, which is responsible for looking after the .com domain, currently logs 53 billion requests for websites &#8211; not just .coms &#8211; every day, and Mr. McLaughlin told BBC News, &#8220;<em>We expect that to grow in 2020 to somewhere between three and four quadrillions (1 quadrillion is 1,000 billion).<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"Ralph Bach\" href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/new-resume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ralph Bach<\/a>\u00a0has been in IT long enough to know better and has blogged from his\u00a0<a title=\"Bach Seat\" href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach Seat<\/a> about IT, careers, and anything else that catches his attention since 2005.
